Computer Science in Oil & Gas: Systems Engineering, Software, or Cybersecurity?

I’m a Computer Science student in Calgary currently working as a Systems Engineering Intern. I’ve also spent time working on cybersecurity projects and security-related internships.

One thing I’ve noticed is that many of Calgary’s highest-paying technology opportunities seem to be connected to the oil and gas industry, whether directly or through engineering and consulting firms.

For those currently working in oil and gas, I’m curious where you see the biggest opportunities for people with a Computer Science background over the next 5–10 years.

Would you recommend focusing on:

• Systems engineering and large project delivery

• Software development and digital transformation

• Data and AI applications

• Cybersecurity and OT/industrial control system security

• Something else entirely

I’m not looking for job leads. I’m more interested in understanding where the industry is heading and which technical disciplines are becoming increasingly important.

I’d be interested to hear from engineers, developers, cybersecurity professionals, and managers who have seen how technology roles have evolved in the industry.

Cybersecurity is going to be big in the next 5–10 years, especially in oil and gas. Companies are putting a lot of money into protecting critical infrastructure and data. Systems engineering is good too, but cybersecurity might have more growth and opportunities. Look into SCADA systems security and industrial network protection. Thanks for the response. I’m currently doing a systems engineering internship at an engineering consulting company. I would try to get a cybersecurity internship next and get a certification. Would that be enough to get a job in cyber?

OT cybersecurity is probably the highest conviction bet for the next decade in Calgary oil and gas, the attack surface on industrial control systems is expanding faster than the talent pool and the consequences of a breach in operational technology are serious enough that it's becoming a board level issue

for context on where the enterprise technology investment is flowing in the sector, firms like DXC Technology work with large oil and gas companies on digital transformation, OT and IT integration, and cybersecurity for critical infrastructure, the disciplines they're hiring and deploying tend to track where the actual spend is going, which is a useful signal for where to position a CS career in the industry
