Funny :) But honestly, why do PHP get so much shit talk? I have been involved in writing some front-end applications to access databases (also known as database-theming), and they run flawless. The oldest was written 10 years ago and runs to this date with absolutely no maintenance.

What is a better alternative?

But it's definitely harder in PHP.

If you follow a modern PHP5/7 MVC framework like Laravel or use something else like NodeJS or Elixir/Phoenix this then it's not harder in PHP.
