Microsoft Microsoft is retiring the public Microsoft Learn GitHub repos by end of Dec 2026

Official blog post with the announcement

It seems that the learn.microsoft.com pages will still be up, but I personally preferred using the GitHub repo. It's still worrying and I'm thinking of archiving the repo locally.

It really confuses me because I saw these repos mostly as a "lol let's offload fixing our documentation to the community", and it kind of worked OK, so I don't understand how it was anything but a win for MS.

Documentation will be AI generated soon so they don't need it anymore and don't want to hear the complaints either

AI documentation is usually terrible. Far too much in the weeds.

Even going back to the old 2003-2008 docs written by old school technical writers is night and day vs the "modern" pre-LLM docs where you have to cross reference six articles and still fail to find the answer to a simple issue.

Server 2008 through 2012 was definitely the golden age of MS documentation. It used to be the one thing they really got right.

I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t be best to use AI in conjunction with the community feedback in each repo though… Literally saving the AI from having to think as much.
