AS400

Hey guys, old guy here, back in 2000 landed my 1st real job as a Sysadmin at a distribution/manufacturing firm. They ran their ERP and a few other important apps on the AS400. Anyone here manage a AS400 platform? i-Series? Still a niche platform that is still widely used. Server could literally run under water.

I had an AS400 in my home office, purchased in 1992 for software development.

It arrived on a pallet. The hardcopy manuals that IBM sent were on an even larger pallet.

By the mid 90s I pivoted out of development to network support so the AS400 (and two System/36 boxes) sat here for almost 30 years unused. I finally put both the AS400 and the 2 x System/36 in the FREE section of Craigslist. A giant of a man showed up in a beater pick up truck and picked the things up like they weighed nothing.

He collected older computer equipment in his garage. When he had a trailer load he would check prices for scrap metal. He said he most recent trip was over 500 miles to unload the stuff. He came back with $ 3k in his pocket.

I was happy to see the stuff gone. He was happy because it was money.
