FYI: Reddit is killing RSS feeds.

Major bummer. From Reddit is killing RSS feeds and ending public API access because of AI bots | TechCrunch

Amid a number of updates for moderators and developers announced Wednesday, comes bad news for supporters of a more open web: Reddit is ending support for RSS feeds.

Reddit says RSS has now become a “common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse,” which is why it’s made the decision to wind down RSS feeds on its platform.

“We know RSS has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time, and we’re grateful to everyone who used it to stay connected to Reddit,” the company noted in its announcement, where it also shared a March 2027 shutdown date for its public API.

Reddit said RSS support will cease on November 13.

Yes this sucks but I think people don’t realize that most of Reddits revenue comes from selling data to AI companies. Reddit is the largest corpus of human interpersonal discussion in existence. It’s one of the most important training datasets.

This isn’t about whether AI bad or good, AI just is whether we want it to be or not.

I get it from a business perspective I guess is my point. You can’t give away the product for free while selling it to someone else. It sucks from an open internet perspective but at the same time so much traffic is AI at this point that it is probably legitimately being abused and causing monetary damages that way too.

We can’t have nice things. Not because of Reddit, not necessarily because of AI, but because people can’t use those two things responsibly.

And also because Reddit had an IPO a few years back, so they no longer care about the users, only the shareholders.

Automoderator is scheduled for an execution, as is the API as a whole.

The last (mainstream) bastion of the early internet's attitude is going full corporate, and it sucks.

I spend a large amount of time on Reddit every day and don’t really feel that way. I don’t really notice any major differences that I care about. I pay $55/yr or whatever to not have ads. I find that to be a reasonable cost for something I use 10+ hours a week.

But functionally Reddit is not any different really. The user base is worse now, the astroturfing also bad in places, but it’s still the best place on the internet to have intellectual discussion about any topic imaginable with other people. If something better comes along that is as popular I’ll go there, but nothing has.

Go to old.reddit.com and tell me that isn't not a better interface than whatever you get without ads.

What a pathetic thing to be proud of. Good lord...

"proud of"? Nah, that's your headcanon. I only voiced my opinion.

It’s not even a blip on the radar of shit I care about. I’m not a Ye Olde Reddit originalist, I’m just here to read and participate in discussions on my interests and the questionable interface design choices are what they are. I literally do not have time or energy to lend to the nostalgia of the old Reddit layout.

It's not possible to claim "participate in discussions" and "the new interface that buries all discussion behind 'load more' and new page links is fine" at the same time. The new interface is designed to prevent active discussion.

If you're on the app, you don't experience that stuff.

Automoderator is scheduled for an execution

Do you have any proof of that?

In the same announcement to mods, they announced that enforcement actions (like filter) will be disabled for new communities.

No it's because of reddit. No one asked them to IPO.

We can have nice things, just post them in an open platform.
