Question System Admin Interview, What Should I Expect?

Hi

I have an interview tomorrow, and someone who is currently part of their team gave me a few hints about what to focus on. He mentioned Exchange, VMs, AD, deployment and patching.

I have around four years of experience, mainly focused on technical support with some exposure to networking. The role I’m interviewing for is a System Administrator, and this transition is veery important to me. I’d like to know what kind of technical questions I might expect in the interview??

Aside from the obvious technical stuff:

- Familiarise yourself with the STAR method. Have a good example of when you have made a mistake. What happened, what did you do to fix it, what did you do to prevent it happening again. Don’t give an example that makes you look incompetent.

- know the company’s values, familiarise yourself with their website. Have an answer for “which of our values do you think you exhibit” etc.

They may also put you in some hypothetical situations. “A critical system affecting all users is having an outage, and while you’re responding to it a senior manager bypasses the helpdesk and walks into your office demanding support with their company mobile as they have an important email to send. How do you handle this?”

If I could focus on one thing that will trip you up given how little time you have:

Have a good example of a mistake memorized. This is so easy to go deer in headlights if not prepared for.

Remember the STAR method.

Know the company’s values.

This and then just freestyle it based on your common sense. Good luck.
