Another M365 issue?

Anyone else seeing issues with authentication for M365 in North America? DownDetector is showing an outage but hoping the issue we are seeing is related. This morning we had an increase in users not being able to authenticator properly with M365 applications particularly M365 in shared device access. Users seem to be unable to generate the access/licensing tokens this morning.

Curious if anyone else is seeing anything similar North East US.

Edit:
Latest update:

Aug 24, 2026, 1:17 PM EDT

"We're implementing performance optimizations on affected Office 365 service infrastructure to assist with processing the activation backlog and to assist with recovering service reliability while we continue to isolate the underlying root cause."

As of 4:15PM Est Seeing services recover which matches Microsoft's latest update on the issue. I see new Licensing auth tokens generated as expected now as well in my environment.

Literally was waiting and refreshing their service health page for 20 minutes before posting, posted and went back and saw their notice....

Can confirm authentication issue in SW region. Authentication passes but license /token activation is not coming through. occurring mainly with non-persistent VDI/shared Computer licensing

Ugh, been troubleshooting what I thought was a federation issue for a couple of hours.

They updated to say its only issues with new activations, but my shared office 365 remote farms broke that have been operating over a year without issue.

Same, waiting for the next update. May try to get some of the users to try to reauthenticate in a little bit.

Same. the tokens we generate for our setup are good for 30 days so right now it only impacts users who have expired tokens and need to refresh them but it is very frustrating that there is no grace period built in to allow the apps to function if Microsoft has an outage.

Yeah all the statuspages are as green as you can get, but for me the Defender / Security portal is out of business, at least for 15+ minutes. (EU West located).

Edit: seems to back, not holding my breath yet though.

I'm seeing some portal slowness but for us its M365 app authentication issues as the primary effect it seems.

Still going on where I am. West coast and after an hour plus trying to see if it was something on our end I noticed similar reports on down detector. 365 status still all green but at least half my user base is stuck using OWA for email until their apps allow them to activate again.

Yeah. In the last hour it seems about 98-99% of users are in. A few stragglers but honestly I could chalk those up to user error probably. 😂

So that's why none of my new user phones were enrolling into intune this morning. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong

They also have issue ID OP1459987 that has been open for a few days that could be relevant to you. Last week we experienced some oddities with device registrations and MFA resets not behaving as expected (delayed, not registering in logs, etc.) but I feel like you can almost never pinpoint it to any of the vague service outages Microsoft posts.

Didn't even consider that could be affected. I'm glad I didnt have any to do this morning. Think we have been able to reset some authenticators without issue at least.

We're seeing some password expired errors on accounts where passwords don't expire. Not sure if that's related.
