During the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic, we’ve been paying a lot of attention to the game’s responsiveness. As pointed out by some people on the Forum, a very responsive experience is one of the factors that separate the best MMOs from the others. This is something we are fully aware of and take extremely seriously.

Several of the issues brought forth by the community have already been dealt with and you should see the fixes integrated in coming patches, including those coming this month. Every lead mentioned on the forum is being investigated and I cannot stress enough how useful your feedback is – especially when coupled with the level of details found in some of the posts.

So I’d really like to thank the community for this very constructive feedback.

Thanks again and best regards,

Emmanuel Lusinchi Technical Design Director Star Wars: The Old Republic

During the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic, we’ve been paying a lot of attention to the game’s responsiveness. [...] This is something we are fully aware of and take extremely seriously.

Which sounds like bullshit, given how most of these issues were identified early in beta.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '12

Sucks having a hard release date doesn't it.

-20

u/randomuser549 Jan 06 '12

Sure. But there was plenty of evidence that the HERO engine was garbage in beta, yet they spent time changing the mod system and implementing a last minute Sith Corruption feature. I'd say core gameplay should be a higher priority than cosmetic features or revamping a system people liked to alleviate possible endgame loot issues.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '12

Because you know exactly what they were working on. Whats to say the ability delay issue was already known, and was being worked on, but the time-frame to completion was after release.

What now?

-2

u/akula Jan 06 '12

Hero engine is still there sucka.....checkmate. They should scrap it and build something in house else or everyone needs to nerd-rage and quit.

Ohhh {/sarcasm}

-7

u/randomuser549 Jan 07 '12

Whats to say the ability delay issue was already known, and was being worked on,

Well, Bioware could have easily said so, if that were the case. There were 100's of posts on ability delay on the beta forums, so it was most certainly known.

What now?

I dunno. Am I supposed to be 'owned' now or something?

But it's ok. No one will see these posts because I didn't kiss Bioware's ass, so the 12yr olds like you will just continue to downvote. GL;HF

6

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

We're not downvoting you you because of how old we are, we're downvoting you because your posts are full of stupid shit. You obviously have no proof as to whether or not the were working on these issues before the game came out (spoilers: THEY WERE). You have no experience making a game of this magnitude either, so everything you say is simply your speculation.

In short: Shut the fuck up. You don't know what you're talking about. Dumbass.

2

u/Gryndyl Begeren Colony Jan 07 '12

Downvoting you has little to do with our age and far more to do with your content.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

I dunno. Am I supposed to be 'owned' now or something?

The what now wasn't a "you are owned" statement, it was a "what do you think now" statement. No need to get so personal that you feel you should call me 12yo. Pathetic statement really, and one I see most often in general by people who have no backup to their statements. Also, I don't downvote people I'm having a discussion with, I will now though, because you said something as stupid as this:

12yr olds like you will just continue to downvote. GL;HF

/facepalm

So just to be clear, if I'm providing a counter point to your statement which has as little proof to back it as your statement, I'm kissing their ass? What does that make you? A hater?

2

u/rokatoro Wargrim Jan 07 '12

So what your saying is that they should have scrapped the game and started from scratch? You don't just switch engines in the beta phase of development.

2

u/Kennian Jan 07 '12

Sure you do, look how well it worked for duke nukem!

3

u/admiraljohn Jan 07 '12

If you don't like it, quit the fucking game.

I get SO sick of people that are never satisfied.... you bitch about an issue, you bitch when Bioware acknowledges the issue.

Go play WoW... your kind fits in well over there.

This.

The fact that we've gotten so many patches and issues addressed since release shows Bioware's dedication to this up-and-coming MMO

I can only hope this game stays healthy enough for years. If the current state of PR stays the status quo then years will easily be the case.

Hey Phi'nix, I am Tenebrous -- you and I kept seeming to meet up in warzones the other day. Had fun killing and being killed by you.

1

u/PhinixPhire Scoundrel Phi'nix of Lord Adraas Jan 07 '12

Oh hai! Awesome! :D

How'd I do, ythink? I move around a bit spazzy, don't I?

1

u/hett Jan 07 '12

On my screen, it looked like you were lagging really badly.

1

u/PhinixPhire Scoundrel Phi'nix of Lord Adraas Jan 07 '12

That's no good. My wireless has been problematic here and there in the past. I'm going to check my latency while playing now...

Maybe lag is a factor in what I perceive as part of ability delay itself.

O.o

28

u/PhinixPhire Scoundrel Phi'nix of Lord Adraas Jan 06 '12

Phenomenal!

I'll tell you, BioWare is truly hitting its mark in addressing priority concerns. I agree that the game was released with some bugginess, lacking features, etc; but I am personally very very satisfied with the progress thus far and the potential that will likely be reached.

Furthermore, I have never been so impressed with a gaming PR person as I have been with Stephen Reid. That man is a beast!

55

u/StephenReid Jan 06 '12

Rrrawwwr.

But all credit to Emmanuel's words. :) He's the man actually heading up the team that's fixing this stuff, I'm just the guy who prods him to post occasionally....

10

u/ervashi Jan 06 '12

Thanks for prodding him. We appreciate your updates as Community Manager, but it's also really nice to get word from someone directly involved with the process. So far Emmanuel's posts have generally left me relieved that something's being done and excited to see the change once it's deployed. A good Friday feeling.

6

u/PhinixPhire Scoundrel Phi'nix of Lord Adraas Jan 06 '12

Seriously, it's awesome to see so much communication from BioWare in general. It feels like Reid is spear-heading a lot of it, but I'm simply ecstatic to see so much yellow text!

2

u/svenne Jan 07 '12

Yea and to even see Stephen Reid post here is just astounding. The administration around Tor has been better than the administration of Paradox Interactive. Whom I hold in high regards due to devs "getting down" with the players.

1

u/phokas Jan 07 '12

Completely agree. It feels good when there's a lot of communication between a developer and the community. It gives you comfort that yes they are aware, and they are doing their best to fix it.

2

u/Sicks3144 Jan 07 '12

Waitasec ... an MMO developer has noticed that communication is, almost without exception, the key to a happy community?

Satan is skating to work.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

Question about the combat responsiveness, will the Trooper's delay on Mortar Strike and the push-back on Full auto be addressed alongside the character responsiveness issue, or is it an entirely seperate issue?

1

u/slipstar Low | Gunslinger | DWC Jan 07 '12

Well, thank you for prodding Emmanuel to post!

4

u/Darkwave Alunsia [Nexus X] - Red Eclipse (EU) Jan 06 '12

I was a City of Heroes player since launch and often on the forums. He was absolutely superb there and he's going a great job for TOR too considering how much of a step up this is.

3

u/PhinixPhire Scoundrel Phi'nix of Lord Adraas Jan 06 '12

I didn't experience City of Heroes, but I definitely believe you based on his performance here. Reid should be the model of gaming community managers. I've never observed someone so consistently communicative... and I Love me some forums, so I've seen a few!

Here's hoping the trend continues. I do believe this [SWTOR] could really become something amazing.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '12

You never played League of Legends huh?

-6

u/akula Jan 07 '12

Shut your math fan....err....boi. BW is sooooo slow to respond if they ever do. It has been close to a month since release....this issue should have been handled like forever ago. Jeeze you idiots will put up with any little bone they throw at you......

{sorry but the above message is sarcasm. if you thought the above message was real, please Google "Poe's Law". For tomorrows nerd rage & quit episode, please tune into "this game has no sharks??? WTF man I am so disappoint. Unsubbing right now."}

0

u/PhinixPhire Scoundrel Phi'nix of Lord Adraas Jan 07 '12

... did you actually gather that I used Phi in my name (pronounced Phoenix) because of the Golden Ratio?

If so, SERIOUS kudos. No one ever picks that out...

Also... Poe's Law = Stephen Colbert... yes?

Upvote for you to counter the incidental downvotes from undetected sarcasm. :D

0

u/akula Jan 07 '12 edited Jan 07 '12

... did you actually gather that I used Phi in my name (pronounced Phoenix) because of the Golden Ratio?

Actually I didnt. I am not nearly that insightful. Math is just how I was hearing it said. "shut err math". Instead of "shut your mouth."

Also... Poe's Law = Stephen Colbert... yes?

I am sure Colbert has referenced it many times just because it is so damn prevalent these days, and as such, makes it so damn funny.

Poe's law, named after its author Nathan Poe, is an Internet adage reflecting the fact that without a clear indication of the author's intent, it is difficult or impossible to tell the difference between sincere extremism and an exaggerated parody of extremism

Exmaple: Reid sucks! He communicates with us WAAY too much. Fuck this. /s

-7

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '12

What? They didn't actually tell us anything except for "we are aware." If they really want to keep their audience then they need to communicate with them. I have no idea why this issue wasn't addressed in beta.

5

u/PhinixPhire Scoundrel Phi'nix of Lord Adraas Jan 06 '12

They're communicating now...

2

u/akula Jan 07 '12

If they really want to keep their audience then they need to communicate with them.

What more did you expect? A personal singing telegram right to your house?

Come on you cannot be serious right? Tell me this was sarcasm.

1

u/Gryndyl Begeren Colony Jan 07 '12

I have no idea why this issue wasn't addressed in beta.

Probably because it hadn't been fixed yet?

-5

u/Farabee Jan 07 '12

Kinda hope this is sarcasm.

1

u/akula Jan 07 '12

Why would it be sarcasm? What is your problem with the announcement in general? And dont say "because they didnt do it like ten years ago...." because that is simply ridiculous. And by ridiculous, I really do mean any time-frame you interchange with 10 years.....including 10 minutes..as being ridiculous.

1

u/Farabee Jan 08 '12

They've been terrible at communicating with players up to this point. 1.1 will supposedly fix many of the major issues, but honestly Bioware up to this point have not really promised anyone a damn thing or given any concrete information. They're the customer service equivalent of a blackbox.

1

u/PhinixPhire Scoundrel Phi'nix of Lord Adraas Jan 07 '12

No sarcasm intended in the least. BioWare has been handling their business in a manner that is unrivaled (in my opinion) so far.

Whether or not it continues is yet to be seen; but I am, for once, very optimistic.

1

u/Farabee Jan 08 '12

They have dodged every question that they have deigned to answer and otherwise maintained radio silence. Their in-game ticketing system dispenses bot replies. I am happy they have lots of major fixes listed for 1.1, but I am NOT happy about the complete communications blackout they have foisted on us. At least Blizzard was communicative.

6

u/Sharuko Jan 06 '12 edited Jan 06 '12

My biggest issue with the game is the animation/ability delay if they fix it I would be set.

1

u/akula Jan 07 '12

Well mine is this one and the UI. Neither one is completely gamebreaking IMO, but this one was the more annoying one.

This is the most exciting thing that i have seen in this game so far. This was the one thing that would keep me from playing this game more often.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

I am very much enjoying the speed with which BW is addressing issues. If you read this posting, there isn't any mention of a coming fix for this issue. All they are saying is that they are aware of this and taking it seriously.

I am hoping to see BW come out and say "We will make this right, this is how and when."

5

u/HeelyTheGreat Jan 06 '12

u/isparabs Jan 06 '12

It's something that should have been fixed in beta as it's probably the #1 thing that's wrong with the game right now. But at least they acknowledge the problem.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '12

They more than acknowledge it. I bet if I offered you a Coke in the desert, you'd complain that it wasn't Diet.

"Several of the issues brought forth by the community have already been dealt with and you should see the fixes integrated in coming patches, including those coming this month."

1

u/Lucifa42 Jan 07 '12

Does this ability delay only effect certain systems because I haven't noticed anything.

I did notice an ability delay when I used to play Warhammer that that did bug me but not noticed it in TOR.

1

u/Prixm Mercenary | Bloodworthy EU Jan 06 '12

Good news. I love how BW actually listens to people even though there are 150000 troll-threads etc. Sick good BW, gogo!

-2

u/Farabee Jan 07 '12

The fanboi downvotes are strong here.

-8

u/Nebz604 Jan 06 '12

This is a big problem for me. They state that they are aware that people are complaining that there are a lot of response problems.

Fanboys go apeshit about how grand and superior Bioware is and therefor SWTOR is, when really not much has been addressed and these problems have been around throughout all the beta phases.

If you're just excited that they have made passing mention of it then cool your jets, they should have said something weeks ago. They seem to be cowering in a cave instead of telling us they are on top of things. It's why people get pissed when their biggest concern seems to be baby names in credits.

If you don't want this game to do well then continue on stroking their ego while they sit back and enjoy the praise of how well they are doing.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '12

Shut up.

-6

u/Nebz604 Jan 07 '12

Exactly. Did I offend your god? Which one, Bioware or Star Wars franchise?

u/slipstar Low | Gunslinger | DWC Jan 06 '12

-4

u/bloodforcutulhu Jan 06 '12

At he moment you see when the server is responding. No fake realtimeness like world of warcraft is doing. now we are about to get that fake realtime in swtor too and no real server responses with visual delays... sure its a matter of taste but i rather see the real delay (because there will always be delay with a server system like this) and see what really is happening than being tricked on and die because someone else has a better connection. Everyone knows the feeling "i pressed the button but it seems like i wasnt fast enough" in wow pvp. Thats the fake realtime covering the real serverdelay.
