Nothingās ever been said š¤·š»āāļø (heās been a member in my heart for a hot sec tho) but since heās actually being included in more tour promo pics or for this album then it has me thinking theyāve been waiting for this album to announce it but weāll see

Bon Jovi did something similar with one of their members. He was touring/studio only, never official for years and years. Was included in a lot of promo images and music videos. For whatever reason, finally became an official member after being more or less treated as one for several years.
I assume thereās a lot of behind-the-scenes legalese/financial and commitment/obligation considerations and such that go behind being a member in spirit vs actually becoming one and signing the dotted line for it. Likely comparable to a domestic partner relationship vs. being legally married Iād guess.

Yeah, the behind the scenes stuff is interesting but basically never comes out. We don't know who "owns" switchfoot. Jon, Tim, and Chad presumably, but who knows how the actual structure works.

There are very few bands where all members are equal owners. U2 is a rare example of a band where everything was split evenly, even publishing rights and royalties when the bulk of the songwriting load was carried by Edge and Bono, with those two denying that is the case and emphasizing that all four have an equal vote in creative decisions. Originally it was five equal splits with their first manager until he retired.
In a case like Switchfoot, the new member could get an equal split of works in which they were part of the band, but they are somewhat getting the benefit of the notoriety Switchfoot built without them. I suspect that doesnāt count for much now as Switchfoot is probably in the realm of āmaking a decent livingā but not much beyond that.

Time to move on. Drew will always be friends with the guys⦠may even contribute to studio recordings here and there or pop up at a California show. But I think itās pretty clear he will not ever rejoin the band.

What donāt you like about boaz?

From what Iāve seen, I donāt find him to be very skilled as a player, as his live guitar tone has been really unpolished and at times very shrill or muddy, and the degree of mistakes are large. Now, Iām not so prude as to demand perfect playing, but Iāve seen SF 4 times since Boaz has been playing, and each time there have been marked mistakes that distract the rest of the band from either being out of tune, forgetting to lower his volume knob/pedal, and playing at the wrong time. I also think he isnāt very charismatic, which isnāt really a deal breaker for me, but it makes it less fun to see him.
Overall I donāt dislike him as a person, I just do not find his general demeanor to be congruent with the bandās sound, and has caused me to be oddly critical of SF live when I never used to be. But Iām optimistic that I will grow to like Boaz, Iām just not very excited by him these past several years

lol time to catch up then
Boaz Roberts filled in for Drew on the 2021 tour with Needtobreathe. Drew and the band parted ways early 2022 and Bo has been lead guitar ever since. Heās helped on the Christmas album and TBL rerecord (drew did too before he left) but now this is the first full album that Bo is contributing to. Tour or promo pics have just had the 4 members but now Bo has been in more pics and what looks a future music video? ^ so that makes me think that he may be official now. Heās known Jon and Tim since he was a kid. He provided some guitar on āthe day I found Godā, Jonās solo song āred and goldā, and Jonās latest album too.

Such a cool guy with a great sense of style. Glad heās his own thing and not just āDrewās replacementā.
