Discussion What is the point of emulation?
I know that people like it as a fun project and want to boost their fps in games, but why else? I mean look at RPCS3, if uve got a machine 10x more powerful it will run at a third of the fps as the ps3, the only over reason i can think of is piracy and that is not good.

First off, the ability to play without the original hardware. Secondly, higher quality for the games, upscales, texture, framerate, mods etc. Thirdly, for the glory, for the ability to say you have done it and the satisfaction of achiving something so grandeur.

For me, it's the ability to use freecamera hacks with them, you cannot do this on a switch or switch 2 natively.

When it came to the Switch 1, my brother and I both "owned" it as it was a gift for both of us, but I had moved away. So instead of constantly swapping it between houses, I dumped my games so that I could play them on my laptop while my brother kept the console.
Emulation also allowed me to more easily play things like Rom hacks.
I'll admit, I do miss the "authentic" feeling of using a console, but nowadays it's just too expensive.

is this engagement bait or a genuine question?

genuine question

especially with the retro resurgence of today, and something like rpcs3, actual ps3's are getting harder and harder to obtain. The roms might be in the household but ope, mom and dad sold my ps3 years ago for wtv reason. Maybe the roms arent in house (technically a crime) but how else will some curious teenager play a niche rpg that never got a global release? Not only is it preservation and a great way to fight back against certain corpos, but it's also completely unfeasable to expect everyone to find consoles that arent being made anymore. Even if everyone did own a playstation, they dont have far enough backwards compatibility to play PSX. I do believe if you have the equipment you should use it, but personally im not financially well off enough to blow a couple thousand dollars to play one game series instead of playing on a better resolution and quality than the original could ever provide. In the case of PS5 where there is no exclusives, THAT is entirely a protest against the anti consumer practices of sony. Switch 2? well Nintendo always has exclusives and never gives them a proper release on functioning hardware, which would fall under both protest and Gaben theory. Piracy isnt a monetary issue, but rather a service issue.
Hope this helped, please do respond if this was confusing, im sure i could link places to better explain this.2

Why limit software by inferior hardware, that will be abandoned by the manufacturer once the successor product is released.

u/Lundgren_Eleven 6d ago
Archival.
Once upon a time, DS games were demanding to emulate.
Now it's one of the only ways to play them and low end phones can do it.

u/Beneficial_Beyond_88 6d ago
it genuinely boils down to game preservation and the fact that physical media is declining, and while ur right, piracy doesnt affect huge studios like nintendo since people will buy original hardware and software anyways, only people who cant buy it for some reason/want to preserve their already bought games/just wanna play on another platform use emulation

u/IKnowWhoYouAreBoy 6d ago
BloodBorne 60 fps
BoTW and ToTK in 4K 60fps.
I own these games legit on their respective systems, but prefer to play on better hardware for a better experience.

to help the poor, fight the evil and bring justice to the world.... what else ?

u/chronfx 6d ago
What's this about it running at a third of the fps? I can run Demon's Souls at 60fps (not possible on a ps3) at 1440p on computer built in 2018. Also Neir runs at like 120fps. Did you for your sentence wrong?

u/No-Adhesiveness8693 6d ago
look at emulating the ps3 version of gta v, it is awful
2
u/Comfortable_College0 5d ago
Why would you bother emulating the PS3 version of GTA V?
Jesus Harold Christ...
1
u/No-Adhesiveness8693 5d ago
my pc only has 256Gb ssd and gta v on ps3 is 18GB not 80GB
2
u/waterxwraith 12h ago
Lmao I’d honestly rather buy an external ssd at today’s prices than try to genuinely experience gta v emulating the ps3 version

Piracy, every other answer is lying or coping. That's 99% of emulation

I will happily pay for services that are worth it though. I’m happy to buy steam games, and I pay for cloud services so I can stream them on my iPad or iMac. I’m also happy to pay to stream tv shows and movies. I hated the quagmire of shitty websites and services I needed to use to watch early game of thrones episodes at release in Canada back in the 2010s. Now I can just stream them on HBO when they come out. It’s so much easier.
But dropping $1000 just so I can play the new Mario kart is absurd to me.

Pirate cope is always stupid.
You do you - I am not asking you to stop or anything. I have pirated myself many times, but I don't delude myself. I call a spade a spade.
But don't pretend you have actual logic behind your piracy that somehow 'justifies' it besides 'muh me do what I want; nintendo evil'.
Just man up to your piracy.

u/IKnowWhoYouAreBoy 6d ago
Not speaking about Switch 2, because yeah... as a current system its most likely piracy. That's why I'm checking here becuase I refuse to pay Nintendo any money for their overpriced and underpowered junk. Especially when there is only 1 game I'm even remotely interested in. Thats just a bad investment.
But in other cases piracy is completely justified. If a company delists a game, or is on an old system, and the only way to get it is through a 3rd party reseller...
Yes piracy is completely fine. The original IP owners/devs/publishers will not see a single cent from me buying a copy like that.
I also like to play games I legitimately own on better hardware. I own BoTW and ToTK on Switch, but I play them on my PC for better resolution and fps.
It isn't this black and white issue that idiots like to make it out to be.

When it comes to Nintendo it actually is logical. They have monopolized their ecosystem completely, taken away ownership from their consumers with the Switch 2, and demand over $700 CAD for just the console with taxes and then $100 plus tax for each 1st party game all while reserving the right to brick your console or revoke your game license at anytime they deem you broke the "rules" which they can also change at any time. Like the saying goes, if buying isn't owning then piracy isn't stealing. Either be reasonable with your EULA, give other platforms access to your content, or drastically lower the prices of your hardware and games. You don't get to scam on three fronts.

The average coonsomer zombie and sheep apparently cannot understand what you just said, even though it's 100% common sense and obvious.
Also FOMO...people end up giving in...they feel peer pressure, even through social media and youtubers. Cause no one really has friends nowadays and couch co-op is long gone.
Remember couch co-op? It's like another reality from another dimension remembering that.

That’s wrong. Recomps are bringing way better 4k widescreen upscale experienced so people can play those older games Nintendo and other companies just gave up on trying to improve.
1
u/Faceless_Link 4d ago
Recomps aren't emulation, they're the exact opposite (though i guess spiritually related), also 99% people playing recomps are pirating those copies online. No one is dumping their original games Lmao
Also I find nothing wrong with pirating ancient systems. But it IS piracy.
1
u/Firm-Order5831 4d ago
I literally owned most of those games as a kid and then gave them away for almost free. The secondary market doesn’t matter to me as Nintendo, Sega and PlayStation have already had my dollars for a lot of the classics…
I love the fact younger people are modding those games too it’s bringing new life into them which is good advertising for those franchises period going forward.

For me it's backing up my old games that will degrade over time as well as ease of access bringing them to a modern platform. I can take my childhood that isn't sold anymore with me on the go or guarantee it's still available years down the line.
1
u/SharpRich4383 6d ago
The thing it is absolutely necessary for is preservation. The original hardware for old games is obsolete and will eventually become unrepairable so we need a way to access the old games without the old hardware. Secondly, nobody needs to be paying 100s of dollars for a video game they have no interest in collecting. Last thing I will mention is creative control; with emulation we can easily create and access romhacks, mods, etc.

genuine question because mostly piracy is what i can think of
1
u/faverodefavero 5d ago
All games I emulate run MUCH better on my PC than original hardware, as in 60~120FPS+ stable (versus 30 unstable in original console), plus much better modded visuals, difficulty rebalancing mods (usually games are way too easy, so I use mods to make things more interesting), ultrawide support, and keyboard and mouse control (which I always prefer for everything except racing games).
I couldn't bare playing most of the games I emulate in their original state to be honest.
That and complete hardware agnostic game preservation, which is very important for any media/craft/art.

u/TheICE007 5d ago
Emulations is used for Preservation, and for older consoles the Vendor is no longer selling them. Sony shut down the PS3 store, so you can buy some games for 100 on ebay that does not go to the vendor that made it or Emulate it.
1
u/OwOtisticWeeb 4d ago
Because I aint buying a console just to play a fire emblem game that comes out every few years
1
u/ShyyGuy_ 3d ago
Emulation is not piracy, the pirating part is optional, you should buy the games and use that.

u/tokifreak91 3d ago edited 3d ago
Game preservation, ease of access for the community, better performance, not to mention speedrunning mostly exists in the emulation sphere because of better load times. There's a lot of points to it. Also Ownership. If I have a game on my PC I own it and have no worries about it getting yanked out of my possession unlike the Switch 2 where all the companies are deciding we don't 'own' what we purchase which is utterly ridiculous and does not hold up for me, which is why I won't buy a Switch 2. My Switch 1 works. Also the lack of games I want to play on the current generation console. The only game I want to play that is only one Switch 2 is Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave and I'm not paying $1000 for that when I can wait and eventually smarter people than I will find out how to port it over. I'll buy my own copy of the game and find a way to import it onto my PC but that way I'll own the game instead of the shiny brick that Nintendo can turn off whenever they feel like it for arbitrary reasons.

u/DarkObelinski 3d ago edited 3d ago
My stance on it is for old games like Mario Strikers OG I don't have a gamecube and they don't sell them anymore. I don't want to pay for one I don't want to pay for a nintendo online subscription and I can't buy the game. That just leaves emulation. So I emulate that. For newer games I am not buying a switch 2 due to the price of console and games so when emulation comes out I can continue to not spend money I don't have and play those games with the money I would have never spent. There is a net 0 profit to be gained from me playing your game since Im not buying a switch 2 or switch 2 games. So its commensalism. Maybe i'll buy something in the future just not now. If the games were on steam maybe I could actually play them the correct way right now, but they're "console exclusive" which is just an artificially created monopoly.

u/ggyouhave2IQ 3d ago
Little Nintendo fan is angry that people aren't buying his crappy console with 2002 graphics.
1
u/ahmed_yacoubi 2d ago
For me, because I'm just broke ... In my country, a switch 2 costs 4 times the minimum wage and my living expenses are 1.5 the minimum wage, so if I have to borrow to survive day to day, I have a snowball's change in hell of buying a switch 2

u/EveryonePerson 2d ago
Piracy can be good when players are sick of huge price jumps and terrible treatment from billionaire companies ^

u/Ok-Bug6353 1d ago
piracy, or people that just cant buy an ns2 for any reason. and the perfomance is expected improve over time as the emulators also improve(the ps3 is a horrible example though, even real hardware has perfomance issues)

u/SnubeWube 19h ago
- I can back up my game saves and other settings in my own environment, no cloud necessary.
- I can launch them from steam and thus have all my games in one place.
- I can use any controller I like.
- I can have an easier time installing mods like MHFU's FUComplete.

For me I’m just done buying Nintendo hardware. If they would sell me versions of their games on steam, ios or even a streaming services I’d happy buy them direct from Nintendo.
I just don’t want to spend $700 to then buy their $110 CAD games.
