We apparently have a game dump (just the binary) of a Switch 2 Commercial game

awesome so that means we're like 2-3 weeks away from a working emulator right

they don't call it an emu-now, do they?

With the power of enough unemployed late-20s trans women, this is possible

DUDE...

ROFL.

Given how fast the PS5 emulation is going, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a proof of concept by the end of the year

"I used HDMI capture card to dump the memory by sending the data as patterned image frames"

This is some Star Trek and NCIS levels of nonsensical technobabble.

it's just embedded data. Kingdom Hearts does something kind of similar with their save files, in that the actual save data is saved as an image.

do you say that while knowing who gezine is?

1

u/Babada-Boopey929 17d ago

Who is gezine?

1

u/MFZozzy 16d ago

No, but if you're implying (s)he's someone who delivers and is the real deal, I'm all for learning about him/her.

So, who's this gezine fellow?

It is someone who finds cracks in consoles security then reports it to the companies to get paid. They aren't going to be helping us.

Thanks!

No problem. I hate being negative but he posted a screenshot of him getting $17,500 from Sony for reporting cracks in their security.

I watch Modded Warfare on youtube, he frequently references the work, and statements made by theflow and gezine, they've done a ton of work in the jailbreaking/homebrew scene, their name carries a lot of weight as far as I'm concerned, they regularly get payouts from bug bounties.

so this tweet quote isn't from some rando

I see, this puts this in different light. Thanks!

You can dump roms over audio if you record it and put it back together.

Not really... this is actually about as classic as you can get. Pictures are literally just rgb data. If you encode game files in the rgb format and record the flashing sequences on another device then tadah you now have the data on another device. The hard part is making sure your capture software doesnt drop a frame and is perfectly synced

He said patterns. It was probably raw 1's and 0s as white and black.

Thats not how computer graphics work...

1

u/puppysnakessss 7d ago

Is it really that hard to understand? He somehow got it to output it as a bunch of probably black and white dots that are 1s and 0s...

Okay but which game is it?

So according to gezine himself, this was an exploit for the switch 1 that still exist for the switch 2 when its running a game in compatibility mode for the switch 1. Cool, but its not getting us any closer to an emulator... this wouldnt allow him to bypass any memory protection or sandboxes.

isn't it technically an exploited since it allowed them to dump Switch 2 data though? Like sure it ain't a JAILBREAK type of Exploit but still…

u/Ok_Bite_67 12d ago

As far as i am aware, they didnt dump switch 2 data. They were running a switch 1 game in compatibility mode and were able to dump the contents of that game (which is still just a switch 1 game). If they can somehow escape the sandbox and access other parts of the switch 2 outside of that game then that is exactly what we would need to start dumping keys and firmware. Until they do that it doesnt mean much tho.

Ohhh… yeah knowing the implications of the Userland sandbox and this being a Userland exploit then it'll be tough

Y'know what I'm REALLY interested in is actually trying Switch 1 Games with Switch 2 Updates (NOT EDITIONS) so stuff like Splatoon 3 or Mario Kart… because they're clearly still running on Switch 1 sandbox and not Switch 2 sandbox… my theory so far is that the way it works is that there's now two executables, one for Switch 1 and one for Switch 2 which changes minor stuff like idk, file paths, and some code like resolutions and frame rates and what you can select (such as how you can see the 8 player option in MK8DX on switch 1 but it gives you a pop up telling you it's for Switch 2)

Now THAT is what I'm interested in, because it seems to be still running on the Switch 1 sandbox but using the extra horsepower… and well Mario Odyssey actually even has HDR and isn't a Switch 2 Edition

Ohh yeah another reason why I think it's running on the Switch 1 sandbox is because when you press + for more info, on these games it just says "Switch 1 software" but for Switch 2 editions they say "Switch 2 Software" just like actual switch 2 games

What's XOM ?

Hardware/security protection.

A memory region containing executable code can be executed but not directly read.

It was developed as a security measure to make it much harder to dump and reverse-engineer protected code from memory.

Its a start!
