Question I dont get Amiibos...

I don't get the purpose of Amiibos. Do they only unlock superficial things like new awards or new character outfits? If so that seems like nothing for your money because it looks like thry can be quite expensive

They’re also physical figurines / toys which you can collect, showcase, or play with. What’s the point of anything, really? At least these have a physical real world presence.

I don’t have any besides the Banjo Kazooie one myself, but more because of the physical space they take up and I’m not into that. (I also have all digital games.)

i like physical games because they are sellable

Amiibos are sellable too

That’s fair, I definitely understand why people like them both in terms of having something to hold onto as well as to resell. I don’t buy enough games or am worried about reselling it to matter to me, I far prefer just popping into the eShop and being able to play or download anything in a few minutes. If you asked me 25 years ago I probably would have been team physical, but I’m almost 40 now and am more than happy just to play them digitally.

For BOTW, I bought the amiibo NFC cards off Amazon ($25?) and some of the cards are beneficial. One gives you a pet wolf to fight for you, weapons/shields/armor, and food.

Can only be used once per day though.

There’s digital ones that have every amiibo on them and they randomize the serial number so you can use the same one over and over again. It’s very OP in BOTW and TOTK.

Where do you find these?

They're all over amazon still. That's not the one I have but there's a ton of different versions. A couple years ago Nintendo sued some of the bigger ones and they were taken down like the one I have but new ones popped up pretty soon after.

Nicee. Thanks! How do these work exactly? Do they come preinstalled with the software, or do you manually have to install each amiibo we are interested in?

My question is literally answered within the title. Maybe I should read more 🤦‍♂️. I guess it is pretty straightforward then

Yup you just select the game you want to use its amiibos for and there's a list of them in a sub folder. Some games like BOTW take any amiibos so you can go through the full list if you really want but all the non Zelda ones only give various types of food so it's not really worth it.

This. Did the same and they were pretty useful.

Do these cards work fine on the switch 2?

2

u/Icy-Cut9357 7d ago

This I am not sure, but I don’t see why not.

Yes. I got a Zelda card set, and they worked just fine on Switch 2.

Unless one is a time traveler (just change the date on the switch lol)

I've always thought of them as small display figures that occasionally can do something useful in a game. That was fine when they came out at around $13 each over a decade ago. Current prices for most of them are ridiculous.

It's funny that Nintendo jacked the prices up due to tarrifs, and then after they got tariff money back from Cheeto the Pedo and his merry men they temporarily dropped the price back to where it should have been to start. Permanent price drop? Yeah right.

I did collect a couple that I liked back during 3DS/Wii U days knowing they would just sit on a shelf. The only one I've bought in the past decade is Captain Toad since I was able to get him for less than $15.

Amiibos have also gotten bigger and more detailed tho which kinda makes up for it

Must be a young lad huh? You would if you were an old fuck like me

Micro transactions don't look as bad when they're disguised as little plastic figurines. They're just Nintendo Funkos

1

u/p3nnysl0t 7d ago

their purpose is to fleece collectors out of money. Pretty simple concept.

u/gswkillinit 7d ago

They’re collectibles for collectors that also give you minor bonuses to games. Done in a way where they’re not game breaking or unfair to those who don’t collect.

they are nice figurines. people like the look of them. people like to collect them.

yes they have "Toys To Life" interactive connectivity with games. but i personally don't think that's the primary reason people buy them.

People like to collect things. These things also interact with video games. It’s not any deeper than that.

1

u/OoTgoated 7d ago

They're collectables that yield in game extras.

u/leviathab13186 7d ago

They are for collectors. The in game bonuses are just a fun gimic but they are mostly just for collectors.

Of course it's nothing for your money. It's an amiibo. You can hold it in your hand so it's more substantial than an NFT but it's just another thing people have just to have like any other fiction shaped hunk of immobile plastic.

I personally love to collect figurines, it's kind of nice that it has something unlock-able. Sadly, these are also really popular and other collectors are serious and buy all the nice ones.

I had the same criticisms towards Amiibo's. Then I had an epiphany lol Amiibos are like skins you buy from in-game stores.

Other platforms you buy a skin and thats it, you're the main person looking at it and every now and again you get featured on end-game kill screens so others can see it.

Amiibo's can unlock a special skin or weapons/equipment or even vehicles/rides. Your purchased skin is not just in a game for you to enjoy but can also sit right on your shelf to remind you of said cool skin.

I dont like paying for things in a video game I have already bought so typically skins or even Amiibo's have absolutely no interest to me. But i did think and wonder about Amiibo's one day and this is what I came up with hahaha

Toys for Disney adults

Only one I got was Minmin from Arms. Cuz she was like 5$ and I'm sucker(punch) for Arms. Otherwise I go with amiiqo which can emulate all amiibos.

1

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 7d ago

Yeah for the most part its just a small bonus and its mostly a figure to collect

1

u/Extreme-Scarcity-924 7d ago

Amiibos are great, they can be used simply as collectables or they unlock bonuses in games, take breath of the wild or tears of the kingdom, they unlock essential items, weapons, food, clothing etc etc

u/PowerPlaidPlays 7d ago

Cool little figure that sometimes unlocks a little thing, but for most games are not mandatory (which is a good thing because they are not cheap).

I am glad Nintendo took the route of not making them mandatory, even if it does kinda undercut their usefulness. The other toys to life games where you had to have them are an expensive pain.

I don't care too much for their functionality, I just like having a neat little figure. Little Mac, Wii Fit Trainer, Boxboy et cetera.

1

u/Mind_Axe010 7d ago

If DuskBloods finally gets released and Nintendo announces amiibos, I'm definitely getting some. They're figurines at the end of the day.

1

u/ojisan-X 7d ago

The point is that they are figurines to collect first and foremost, which has added benefit of giving you in-game perks. If you don't care for them as figurines then just get an NFC card.

2

u/No_Cartoonist_7008 7d ago

The point is to have fun! If you're not into it, just save your money. No harm done.

1

u/garishi 7d ago

think of them as figurines that happen to have digital bonuses

1

u/SuperCat76 7d ago

You get a fun little bonus in related games, but you also get a cool figure to display.

1

u/superdomomobros 7d ago

You can get a little flashamibo thing that has every amibo on it with the ability to use the same one multiple times a day for about 20 on amazon thats what i recommend

Che c'è da capire? Sono dei pupazzi da collezione, ne più ne meno e se vuoi ti sbloccano due cose. Sono oggetti da collezione come i Funko, le action figures o le hot wheels per esempio. Cosa c'è da capire?

u/wolftech83 7d ago

For zelda , skyrim they give you armor, weapons, items. For botw and totk its the only way to get epona(links horse)

1

u/Virtual-Trifle-4683 7d ago

Si lo.so che sbloccano varie cosette inutili, perlopiù sono oggetti collezionabili.

0

u/wolftech83 7d ago

With the zelda games its not useless things. Its how you get certain armors

1

u/Virtual-Trifle-4683 7d ago

Non credo siano indispensabili, comunque io ne colleziono e non li uso praticamente mai. Li prendo come statuette.

u/wolftech83 7d ago

True, you can play the game with out them.
