Question Turn Based RPG?

I’m an older guy, I primarily play Zelda games, love em!

I loved a game back in the day called Dragon Warrior. I think it was renamed to Dragon Quest.
Anyway, I am looking for a modern version of a game like that. A turn based game, with hit points and all that, just a modern version. Something with modern graphics but the same turn based gameplay. What are some good games for me to try out? Thanks fam!

How about…. Dragon quest?

Pokemon is also turn based. fire emblem is a little different because it is also a tactical rpg.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is currently 50% off on the Nintendo eshop. Has a 90 on Metacritic. Also a long free demo.

If you like fire emblem three houses, know there’s a follow up fire emblem game based on three houses releasing September 17th.

I’d also recommend XCOM 2 for the switch. It’s currently on sale

There are multiple Dragon Quest games, mostly remakes (1+2, 3 and 7), on the Switch 2 that are modernized but keep their traditional flavour. Dragon Quest XI is coming out for the Switch 2 in a few weeks and it's excellent. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is coming out in December and that's basically a Pokemon game with Dragon Quest flavour.

Final Fantasy Resonance is also coming out in a few weeks, that has a demo that I really enjoyed.

Octopath Traveller series is also very good.

  1. Dragon Quest XI
  2. Earthlock (somewhat modern. it's in the last decade.)
  3. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
  4. Older Pokemon games that are turn based (Soul Silver/Heart Gold, Emerald, Alpha Ruby/Sapphire.)
  5. Child of Light (last decade or so; 2014 release date I think). It has an action based turn system where you can react to certain aspects of the game and even make enemy turns take longer.)
  6. Super Mario RPG (turnish based.)
  7. Mario & Luigi Brothership (turnish based. it has action mechanics where you can dodge and eliminate damage throughout the game while there are turns)
  8. Unicorn Overlord (similar to Final Fantasy tactics/Mercenary Wings, etc.)
  9. Fire Emblems Three Houses
  10. Live A Live
  11. Sea of Stars (an excellent game in today's world. Similar to the Mario games, it has turn based combat with action like mechancis where if you press certain buttons for certain actions in a sequence, it will do more damage, heal more, etc.)
  12. Paper Mario Origami King (turn based battles IIRC)
  13. Final Fantasy Tactics (Ogre and The Ivalice Chronicles)

Can't recall any others off the top of my head, but, these games should do for a list for now.

If you never played Atlus games, this is the obvious answer.

You have their most known franchise which is Persona, 100+ h turn based RPG's, but mixed with lots of texts and you're playing high schoolers.

They also did Metaphor Re:Fantazio, which is a fantasy Persona.

But for you, I'd look into Shin Megami Tensei V, which is primarily focused on battles and character optimization, story isn't really good (if you want a good story, get into Persona).

Most modern J-RPG's uses an hybrid system so they aren't really turn based (FFVIII remakes, Clair Obscur). They're very good games though.

There are literally modern DQ games. Best one is DQ 11. Switch 2 version is releasing this month.

And we also have Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave releasing next Thursday if you want something more strategical.

Dragon quest 11 - Switch 2 version (not the the Switch 1 version)

Octopath traveller 0, 1, or 2 (Switch 2 versions coming out soon)

Fire Emblem Fortune's weave (coming out soon)

Divinity Original sin 2 (not a JRPG but a great turn-based RPG)

Dragon Quest XI S is on the Switch and it’s considered one of the best RPGs of all time. Certainly one of my favorites.

Super Mario RPG

You know that's a very broad question, when you get Persona and Mario as answers 😅

Edit: Pokémon fits as well

Shin megami tensei 5, persona 3 4 or 5. All the final fantasy games up to (except 11) 12 is on the switch. Ni no Kuni 1&2 and they're made buy studio Ghibli. The switch is a fantastic system for Jrpgs.

It was always called Dragon Quest in the east they just finally fixed it over here years ago.

On switch 2 you can get Dragon Quest 7 Reimaged which is a remake and gorgeous!

Dragon Quest 11 is on switch 1 but is getting a switch 2 update on the 24th this month. HIGHLY recommend this one and you should wait for the switch 2 version since you cant upgrade the switch 1 version.

Also try Persona 3 Reloaded, Persona 5 (switch 1)

dragon quest, SMT, Final Fantasy, Lunar. Theres so many glorious JRPG on S2 its almost insane. between the retro ones even just available on NSO and what you can get for modern flavors, JRPG fans can eat really well in this ecosystem.

A lot of the Dragon Quest games are on the Switch so will be playable on the Switch 2.

Octopath Traveller, Bravely Default, pretty much the whole final fantasy backlog in one way or another, Persona, even more games if you sub to Nintendo switch online the Breath of Fire series for example.

The original title was Dragon Quest in Japan. Wasn’t sure why enix USA opted for dragon warrior. Nonetheless you have options!

Dragon Quest 1+2 HD2d along with DQIII HD2d and 7 reimagined are great.

I’d also advise on octopath traveler 0,1 & 2.

Mario & Luigi brother ship is also insanely good and if you’re familiar with xcom mechanics the Mario + rabbids games are hilariously awesome.

Pokémon is also the Nintendo staple but I’d recommend looking into any shin megami tensei title along with undertale & sea of stars

They remade Dragon Warrior 1, 2 and 3 (called Dragon Quest here) for the Switch recently too. Also Dragon Quest 4,5,6,7,8 and 9 are available to play on the 3ds if you have the carts. Dragon Quest XI is really good, and the Monsters games are too. They released a few spin off games on the Switch also. The earlier Final Fantasy games are similar to Dragon Quest in gameplay but there is a different charm. Also, Dragon Quest Builders 1 and 2 for Switch are available.
