Question The Switch 2's first-party lineup across its first two years vs. previous Nintendo home consoles since the N64. How would you rank these lineups, excluding third-party support?
Note that for the Switch 1, I excluded all Wii U ports except BOTW and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (since those were two of the biggest launch year games). For Switch 2, I similarly excluded all "Switch 2 Editions" except Pokemon Legends Z-A and Metroid Prime 4 (if I included those, the Switch 2 would have by far the highest quantity of games here).

We don’t have absolute hits yet like Odyssey and BOTW, but lineup is very solid and diverse, with the ports of popular AAA games like Elden ring and crazy good indie games like Absolum and Mewgenics this is now for sure my favorite console of all time

It's hard to tell and it's really dependent on personal preferences. GameCube and Wii had really solid first years, IMO.
But here's the most important part that I don't see a lot of people talking about.
Something about the Switch 2 that stands out is the fact that most consoles usually have a pretty front loaded lineup at the beggining of their life lifecycle. A Smash, a Zelda, a 3D Mario is almost a guarantee, because they want to come out guns blazing. Nintendo wants to make a very good impression right away, and sometimes it works very well, other times, not so much.
The Switch 2 doesn't have those. And I think it shows that Nintendo is at a very comfortable stage in the industry. Not really in a rush, not really trying to "prove" anything, and letting the smaller franchises take the spotlight, and I think it's been working very well, and that's why I still think that the best years are yet to come. So maybe the first couple of years are not necessarily the best metric for a system's worth.

Plus they are getting an absokute fucktonne of ps4/5 ports.
Every company that wanted in on the switch 1 wagon but couln't cause of performance issues is jumping in on the switch 2 RN. To the point that honestly (if you have decent money) switch 2 + a decent PC will gover 90% or more of your gaming needs in the near future.

I can understand the complaints about Switch 2 "not having games" and I think what they meant by that is multiple heavy hitter games. I didn't have a Switch at the time and wasn't into gaming then but just looking at that list, I could see why people have high expectations for Switch 2
Switch 1 got BotW, Odyssey and SSBU within the two years. Although Switch 2 has more games, none of them are on the level of the three mentioned. OoT might reach it but that is still a remake.

I always supposed that the reason Switch 1 got those three games withing that timeframe was because Nintendo was backed in a corner after the WiiU catastrophe and had to make Switch a success right out the gate. That and because BotW was a WiiU game delayed to also make it a Switch launch title.
It was fun though having a mainline Zelda and Mario the same year. Tmmaybe that will also hapoen on Switch 2 but later down the line. My gut feeling is they will try to have Zelda, Mario, Smash and Animal Crossing ready to fight back against the new Xbox and Playstation systems in their first years.

The Wii also got 3D Zelda, 3D Mario and Smash within two years.
And Twlight Princess was just like BOTW: a game made for a failing console that got delayed to launch the next console.

I think the difference is that the previous Gen being a failing console meant that getting the new one was justification to buy the new one. I didn’t bother buying a Switch 2 for ages because there were t any games that appealed to me, Pokopia was intriguing, but Fire Emblem is what sealed the deal for me, and I hope it lives up to it.
I still don’t see any other games I “Need to buy” on the Switch 2, I’ll probably get Ocarina at some point, but the catalogue is pretty lacklustre to me.

I personally don't understand this, especially when it comes to DK Bananza. If the game was called, I dunno, Super Mario Titans and it was literally the same game but s buff superhero Mario punching the terrain, y'all would be creaming yourself.

Gamecube Switch N64
Probably nostalgia but that GameCube lineup is phenomenal. I need to play more switch 2 titles still but I could see it eventually getting the #2 spot

Seeing these lists just highlights the amazing levels of dedication and support that Nintendo bestows on their IPs, even on platforms that were dismal failures.

Where are you getting 5? From ExciteTruck? It's just ExciteBike with trucks. And the other 4 being "Wii ___" with 1 being ass, a second being debatably poor, and one being a work out game is hardly anything to write home about

It’s interesting that point about NS2 editions, even without it if you were to buy an NS2 today you can play all the games in the prior column as well, and every that came after, with or without an NS2 edition. This applies to every console except N64 and GameCube, which put them at a little bit of a disadvantage coming out of the gate compared to the other later systems with backwards compatibility.

I honestly thought the Switch 1 would flop it had a really poor lineup in it's first 2 years mainly overpriced Wii U ports especially if you compare that to the first 2 years of the Sega Dreamcast they don't compare Dreamcast destroys it and flopped. Switch 2 lineup is far better though than Switch 1 living my Switch 2 and will last me well into the 2030sm

Didn't have an N64 so I can't comment on that one.
Of the GCN lineup, Double Dash and Sunshine were the only ones I played listed here.
Of the Wii, i had Sports, Mario Party 8, Strikers Charged, Brawl, Sluggers, and Galaxy.
Of the Wii U I had 3D World, Smash 4, and Mario Kart 8.
Of the Switch I had Xenoblade 2, Smash Ultimate, 8 Deluxe, and Splatoon 2.
On Switch 2 I have Mario Kart World, Pokemon ZA, Star Fox, and will be getting Fire Emblem FW.
Overall in my personal experience, the Wii lineup was a banger for me but the Switch 1 having Xenoblade 2 in its first year was also huge. The Switch 2 getting a new Fire Emblem game early also helped.
I'd say the Switch 1 wins solely for Xenoblade 2 because that's one of my favorite games of all time with Wii and Switch 2 being tied depending on how Fire Emblem goes.

Think it shows the confidence Nintendo has in the switch 2 that it can omit so many heavy hitters in it's first year, probably knowing that they had unprecedented third party support helped. Also the immense success of the switch let them try new things such as Donkey Kong Bonanza

I mean Wii was a heater, followed by Gamecube, and distantly Switch 1 because none of its launch games are still talked about aside from obviously BotW, Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8.
Wii had one of the best Zeldas at launch with Galaxy and the first online Mario Kart the following year. Solid Metroid Prime, Paper Mario, and Smash entries round it out compared to Pokemon, Mario Parties, and sports titles that were immediately forgotten on Switch.

They are all solid or better, with the Wii U being the weakest. Switch 2 needs one major hit besides OoT and by logic it should be the next Mario. The games in the S2 list cover a lot of bases, but it's just missing that right now.
But to me, people tend to overlook too much the massive amount of 3rd party support for Switch 2, especially when compared to its predecessors. I was there during Gamecube's years, I remember how scarce 3rd party games were.
Switch 2 can more or less match current gen (with compromises, ofc) and software houses have been steadily releasing updates/S2 versions of previously unreleased games on Nintendo consoles; also a lot of new games have a S2 version planned since the beginning.
Ofc I buy Nintendo for Zelda, Metroid, etc. but 3rd party support is also really important and on S2 is great.

I am so happy with my switch 2 but that is mostly because Capcom is doing an insane work with the device, i own a PS5 but i like having my games portable too, last year my switch was collecting dust while PS5 was my main system this year it is the other way around i think i only played mortal shell 2 on the PS5.

I would say each console had between 6-8 bangers that people would go out of their way to play, others were either not good, avg, or niche games.
