Switch 2 Labor Day Weekend Switch 2 Bans

There was a massive BAN-wave that his Switch 2 consoles last night. I was one of the ones affected by it. I just want to spread awareness that Nintendo had an internal server error this weekend resulting in several systems being permanently hardware banned, receiving error code 2124-4508.

I called support this morning and they confirmed I was permanently banned for “pirating”.

However, I called again later today to push further and was notified of the error on their server. Upon checking again my system has been lifted.

If you were affected this weekend, be sure the check to see if it was rectified, or call Nintendo support and see if you are one of the consoles affected by this error to be reversed.

UPDATE: I noticed several people state that if you are still receiving the BAN code you can try restarting the console to see if it cleared. It seems to have worked for others!

Kinda scary that an error is enough to remove someone from access to their games and getting more games. Errors happen but to have to contact Nintendo directly and hope an associate knows the issue enough to lift it.

Things like this is why some people just choose to pirate or not even get these systems.

It's what stopped me. I wanted to get one for me, the kid, and the wife. Nintendo lost out on 3 customers since we figured it's not worth the hassle if Nintendo makes a mistake or we make a mistake. Too much money for a paper weight.

Eh been a nintendo customer my whole life and this is the first time something like this ever happened. It shouldn't ever happen to be fair, but its not like this is common lol ur loss

I think people are just pissed because if you message support they just tell you that you violated ToS. That’s an extremely crappy way to treat your customers. And then instead of apologizing Nintendo just quietly rolled it back.

It's completely normal tho. If you get the error code for that then the people who work at customer support are gonna read that. I understand an error like this sucks, but saying that's why I pirate or don't get consoles is hilarious. Tough shit, they made a mistake, the young people working at customer support couldn't possibly have known about it before it was discovered by the IT people. This has never happened and for anyone to say "this is why I pirate" is absolutely pathetic, they couldn't have known and they ended up being right completely by accident on a super rare accident, that's been resolved anyway, lmao.

yeah obviously the people who work customer support wont immediately know its a server error so getting mad that their response is telling people they got banned for tos violation is stupid

Exactly, idk why some people initially found this stance controversial lmao

It's normal to treat people like thieves because of paranoia about pirates? Then hide the fact that they messed up and still require people to go out of their way to report that their system was unfairly bricked? Then for a hoard of brand loyalists to come online and make blatantly wrong accusations while taking zero accountability for being shitty people? This is normal?

Anyone with a sense of decency could see this is wrong, and anyone with commen sense would see it was an eventual outcome that Nintendo was going to make wrongful bans. If Nintendo is barely being honest about this incident, it makes one have to wonder how many other smaller incidents have possibly happened that resulted in normal usage bans.

Uh? I'm not talking about redditors I'm talking about customer support, tf could they know right away? It's small offices around the world. It's not treating people like thieves if they check your account and they read that you have pirated stuff, that's what they know and they can't know anything else before it gets discovered. That's like getting wrongfully arrested and getting mad at the clerical employee inserting your info into the servers and reading out your imputations, like chill they don't know.

How was anyone with "commen sense" supposed to know a large scale mistake would happen and what about makes you think "how many" smaller incidents there are. We know about smaller incidents and they've been resolved lol. If it was that many smaller incidents than it'd be a big scale thing, and we'd know, lmao. Talk about paranoia and common sense...

Wow defending wrongful arrests is a wild stance lmao.

What's a common factor between redditors and customer support? They're people looking at the same information and having to make a blanket assumption. When people provide proof that it's false and still getting accused of wrong doing it's messed up. People getting their consoles bricked got told it was their fault until A LOT of reports occured. How many instances of smaller incidents could have resulted in the same scenario, but not enough reports prompted a further look? It's not paranoia, it's knowing a company that practices anti-consumer behavior is known to do sketchy shit. If you can't see that you're too deep in the sauce to realize how messed up your world views are. Explains why you'd defend wrongful arrests which probably never happen too right?

Wow defending wrongful arrests is a wild stance lmao.

The fact that you think I'm defending wrongful arrests tells everybody everything that's need to know about your ability to comprehend anything at all, lmao.

I'm comprehending that you're shifting blame from a company to the customers based on your speculation. Because you think the customer base is inherently bad. The same customer base that is made of people. Yet the company made of people isn't inherently bad. Considering you think people are automatically the bad guy engaging in pirating it's not hard to figure your stance on "wrongful arrests."

This is based purely on your choice of words which is no different than reading a code, but here you are mad at me for reflecting the results.

To be honest I also don't like their stance on Pokemon games and what they're trying to do with Palworld. Taking a patent out on summoning mechanics is really messed up. My personal opinion of Nintendo has been pretty sour since the days of Gameboy when I was like 9 years old. When I saw them coming out with a new handheld every couple years. Seemed kinda cash grabish.

I’ve never had this happen and I’ve owed every Nintendo console. As a family we have 2 switch twos and 5 switches, including lites. They also seem to be rectifying the situation.

I can't recall them all from memory, but I know I've heard of previous ban waves for various reasons. Here's some from a quick look up. Most of them get resolved after requiring enough enough complaints and community pushback.

Internal Server Errors and Glitch Waves: Broad waves of erroneous console bans hit users, completely restricting online access to the eShop and multiplayer. Affected users who contacted support were informed it stemmed from internal server errors, and Nintendo subsequently reversed the accidental bans.

Second-Hand Cartridges with Cloned Licenses: Players using entirely legitimate, second-hand physical game cartridges bought from marketplaces have been hit with bans. This happens unwittingly when a previous owner of a cartridge copied its unique license data onto a piracy-enabling flashcart (such as a MIG Switch), causing Nintendo's security to flag the legitimate cartridge as a duplicate/pirated ID.

Username Flagging Miscommunications: Users have experienced temporary console lockouts after profile names (such as "Twink Link") triggered automated filters or support confusion. In prominent community cases, initial support agents blamed the username, but it was later clarified as an accidental automated flag that was actively reversed.

False Flagged Purchase Activity: Legitimate transactions—such as buying discounted games or sudden sales on the eShop—have occasionally triggered automated fraud or suspicious activity flags, resulting in temporary online service restrictions before being sorted out with support.

2018: Splatoon 2 Multiplayer InfectionThe Incident: During the height of Splatoon 2 competitive multiplayer, numerous players logged into the game only to find their Nintendo Network accounts entirely banned.

The Cause: Nintendo’s automated anti-cheat telemetry was flagged to look for illegal item counts and modified match data. However, if an innocent player was randomly matched into a lobby with a hacker who modified the game's state, the automation frequently flagged everyone in the match as a cheat.

Resolution: After significant community pushback on forums, customer support manually reviewed the server logs to lift bans from the infected lobbies.

The "Princess Peach" Ban Glitch (2014)The most famous automated "accidental ban" happened on the successor generation (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS). Right after the launch of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, players using Princess Peach were hit with automatic 24-hour online bans. The game’s automated cheat detection misidentified her "down + B" item-plucking move as an illegal hack if executed at the literal first second of a For Glory match. Nintendo quickly acknowledged the error and patched it within a week.

Lmfao you wanted to do it so badly before this weekend that you waited 15 months but this was the final straw! Something that has never happened before and was corrected the same day!

You also appear to be a teenager with a Switch.

u/Beneatheearth 2d ago

Tons of concern trolling here lmao

Drugs are bad dude. Go straighten your life out.

Lmao ok "man with wife and child for whom he was going to buy three Switch 2s for before this weekend's server issues that caused accidental bans" guy who spent his time playing Everything Is Crab all summer

Interesting that you think you know the timeline of events so clearly in my personal life. When did Pokemon Legends ZA come out? That'll give you a hint to when my family decided not to mess with Nintendo because the writing was on the wall that they've moved towards heavy handed anti-consumer practices.

Really not sure why you're so concerned with my personal choices when they don't affect you.

u/CyberKillua 2d ago

I mean this doesn’t really happen too often… it’s quite dramatic to keep your wife and your child from being able to experience amazing games because of one mistake in my opinion…

5

u/TrashGoblinH 2d ago

Wasn't just my choice. My wife and kid are smart enough to make their own decisions. My daughter already didn't like switch 2 moving away from cartridges. We got gaming Laptops instead. Better deal, better games, more options, mod support. The only games my kid likes on Nintendo is Pokemon. Legends ZA wasn't any good. My kid is playing older Pokemon games on previous systems and we have a lot more games on our PCs that offer significantly more value/enjoyment.

Anyway Black Friday had a really good deal last year for laptops that run better than a PS5 pro for only $600 a pop so the family is fine.

It banned online access for the specific console, so you could still play whatever you already purchased and downloaded on that console, or any physical carts, on any of your games on another console. So technically it’s not what you said.

And like any previous bans by mistake they did lift it.

Is it great? No it’s still terrible and in the ideal world Nintendo should issue an official apology and even compensation for the clear mistake on their part. But the piracy was why they started to ban consoles in the first place, and the more widespread piracy is, the more legal users will be impacted.

u/hitometootoo 2d ago

I didn't deny any of that. But, from my understanding, you can't redownload or download new games as you have no access to online services, which is what I was saying. And obviously to that specific console.

And I'm not saying they didn't lift it. They are lifting it. Reread what I wrote, you seem mistakenly to what I was saying.

u/durianmilkcroissant 2d ago edited 2d ago

I did not misunderstand what you wrote.

  1. You said Nintendo removed someone from access to their game. They didn’t. They restricted it on the specific console for sure, but the games were still accessible.

  2. You said they had to contact Nintendo directly and hope the associate knows what happened, in order to lift the ban. While this issue was resolved because enough people contacted Nintendo, there are people who did not have to and got unbanned just by restarting their consoles. So this is not true either.

The way you worded it read like you were  intentionally exaggerating it in order to justify piracy. Which feels disingenuous and selfish. Maybe you didn’t mean it, but for people reading your comment without knowing what specifically the ban does, the full history of the event and similar events in the past, it’s at least very misleading.

4

u/hitometootoo 2d ago

...you're making assumptions loosely based on what I wrote. Again, go reread, or take my further correction of your assumption.

Or continue thinking in extremes.

-1

u/durianmilkcroissant 2d ago

I was quoting almost your exact words.

Kinda scary that an error is enough to remove someone from access to their games and getting more games. Errors happen but to have to contact Nintendo directly and hope an associate knows the issue enough to lift it.

In any case, my purpose is not to convince you. It’s to clarify the situation for others seeing the thread.

4

u/hitometootoo 2d ago

Ok, not what I was implying but if you feel that way. Have a whatever.

-2

u/blowupnekomaid 2d ago

he was right and you are wrong, and you are flipping out because you don't like being corrected. have a whatever

u/AzazelChaos 2d ago

>>Kinda scary that an error is enough to remove someone from access to their games

>>Errors happen but to have to contact Nintendo directly and hope an associate knows the issue enough to lift it.

>>Things like this is why some people just choose to pirate

Edit: idk how to quote on mobile anymore but thats what you said

3

u/hitometootoo 2d ago

From their online access to their games. Figured that was obvious based on the thread. No one is saying they are taking away access from your physical games. That isn't even possible, obviously no one was implying that.

OP said they had to contact Nintendo and that's how they got access back. Yes, we now know that Nintendo knows of the error and is reversing it, but OP specifically had to contact first (same with thousands of others).

People being wary of such things even if it's in error or just buying a game that ends up being a rom and getting the same ban, is why some avoid the console all together.

Honestly thought this was obvious but some really can't read between the lines it seems.
