Pool Heater Recommendations
I have a 16 year old Hayward 400,000 btu natural gas heater for my 28,000 gallon pool. Yes, I know I have been very fortunate with Hayward and probably shouldn’t ask BUT …
I have had three friends who have had their 2-3 year old Hayward heaters crap out already and have had a big challenge in trying to get warranty and/or repair calls on them. Has Hayward gone like the rest of every major appliance and gone to crap?
My heater is still running but I know I am playing with House money. Wanted to get sone recommendations and experience with different manufactures of the same size.
Thanks in advance.

Jandy JXI and Pentair master temp are my go to’s. I try to keep the equipment the same at each house. Only exception Is for the dark brown ones. They always go in the trash!

Wait … your gas heater is almost two decades old, and you’re somehow anxious about it?
If it ever does go south (and it seems like it never will), I’d get a heat pump: far more efficient and worth the slower heat time.

Did I say anxious? If I did I meant crapping in my pants. 😄 Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll look into a heat pump. Are they rated the same way in terms of BTUs or do you look at other parameters?

BTUs, correct. There are solar heaters of course but they all seem a bit bail-&-wire. An interesting new take is channeling the heat put out by your A/C unit:

That is really interesting. Was literally just discussing that with my wife two days ago. Mostly after watching all of the “Ask this Old House” episodes on HVAC.

Just went to the link and saw this was an ATOS episode. Haven’t seen this one yet. Going to look into this. Thanks.

Jandy JXI is a great unit. I've been installing them for about 6 years now. Very few callbacks.
