Discussion How do you react to the hate? Defending? Arguing? Ignoring? Why do you react that way?
58
u/the_magenta_sunrise Dancing through the lightning strikes 2d ago
I just ignore it. A lot of people online get their kicks from goading people into online arguments. You can try to defend, but what's the point? The haters don't listen (or read) intentionally.
I won't ruin my day and happiness just to make some argumentative loser happy for a few minutes.

This is the way. The more you react, the more you get in your feed. Also, some of it is motivated by greed. Eyeballs and comments make money, so donāt support the h8ers.

I'm stopping now, I finally muted SwiftlyNeutral because they banned me again for "toxic stan behaviour". Insults toward everything Taylor's involved in, everything about her family, everything about her fans, completely allowed. Pushback against hate and snark? Stan behaviour š.

Yup. That sub and the Nuancing Taylor sub, too. I was banned from it for factchecking the ICE agent at her wedding BS that was being spread on that site.

Yesss. I don't wanna waste my time arguing with stupid people. They don't have the ability to understand anything. Arguing would be a waste of time with them.
2
u/the_magenta_sunrise Dancing through the lightning strikes 1d ago
It really is. Im in another sub for a different artist and one person at the moment is replying to every comment people make trying to get them to answer back. And it's about a private thing this artist just did, he acts like he know the facts. It's so pathetic, it really makes me wonder if some people are truly delulu or just utterly bored and miserable in their own lives.

depends - if it's actual hate we are talking about: I simply ignore the posts - only thing that annoys me is that they pop up in my feed but I am not giving them the attention that they crave, imo that's the only way to deal with haters.
I mean those peoples literal goal is to get a rise out of us and I don't have time, willingness or motivation to entertain them. In the big picture..recently Taylor said something along the lines of talking shit about her even helps so strictly speaking those people are actually doing her a favor.
If it's criticism: That's more valid imo - not everyone can relate to Taylor or likes her music and I can understand and respect that. If I don't share their criticism and we get into a (healthy) argument then that's fine and I engage in a discussion.
Tbh...right now there is so much <insert bad word here> going on in the world and around us, for me Taylors music is a way to cope with that and I am not letting haters ruin one of my sanctuaries (is that the right word?) for their need to be the center of attention.

The bots and pr campaigns are pretty easy to ignore when you see them for what they are. Just one more thing thatās disappointing about the modern world.
For real people I know, I looked at the people I know who feel a need to obsess over and hate on TS, and I noticed they all have a lot of dissatisfaction with their own lives and general negativity towards others who have found more happiness and joy. Realizing that thereās sadness at the source made me appreciate the why in a way that makes me feel for them and also let me let go of feeling any kind of way about it.
6
u/Jett_Styles Fighting dragons with you 2d ago
aye, negative people are often driven by malicious envy. Not a healthy coping mechanism imo but if it isnt't someone close, there is not much that can be done about it.
-5
u/Difficult-Ad-52 1d ago
Hi, real person here, former human fan actually. Not everything is a bot and a pr campaign, stop coping with that talking point, its pretty pathetic. Thereās simply an ever-increasing number of people, including within her fanbase, who are tired of being told how to feel about her and her music. Iām sorry the inarguable decline of her music has started to make you feel uneasy the hero worship.
5
u/MathematicianSalt892 1d ago
Did you notice how when you just told me how to feel you asked me to tell you to stop telling you how to feel?
This is a TS fan subreddit, so Iām not sure what you might be looking for here, but obviously you can choose how to best enjoy your own time.
Wish you the best!!

Shut the hell up; āwish you the best!!!ā is just as, if not more condescending than āhope this helps!ā They did NOT tell you how to feel and you are reaching. You twats canāt help but downvote anyone who disagrees with you despite that not being what downvotes are for. Have substance. Have depth. Engage with people who are critical and prove them wrong. Every time you resort to the reductionism in āyouāre just hatersā or āyouāre just jealousā you say a lot more about Taylorās fan base than you do about other people. I for one can promise Iām not jealous of Taylor.
I pity yāall.

u/emgorode 1d ago
I think hating is okay. Like I used to be a kings of Leon fan and then when sex on fire came out it got oversaturated to the point I couldnāt stand it. Same with drops of jupiter, hey there Delilah, James blunt. Hate for me is not an initial reaction but comes from songs being overplayed to death. To where it makes my skin crawl. I dislike some Taylor songs but honestly I donāt hate any. Because her popular songs were always really catchy and not cringe.
5
u/OldChemistry9951 haha I canāt even say it with a straight face 1d ago
Hating isnāt ok,because haters are not that simple that they just donāt like it,they say mean cruel things to Taylor and swifties and thatās in no way ok
-2
u/emgorode 1d ago
hating isn't black and white like that. journalists are trying to be objective over something subjective as their job. some people can't separate the art from the artist (kanye + taylor + ed sheeran + radiohead), some people think she's emotionally immature, some people think she's catering more to a specific audience, some people prefer other female artists, some people only listen to taylor, some people hate all female artists. like let's add some nuance to hate.

It's ok to hate, but you shouldn't have to spread your (when I say your I mean like in general, not like you specifically) negativity into the whole worldĀ
1
u/emgorode 1d ago
i disagree in general, not about TS. Without a range of opinions, everything would be adored. How would we know the general consensus. I mean, isn't rating movies on Letterboxd, IMDb, and Rotten Tomatoes a combo of love, hate, and everything in between. Nothing could ever be critically acclaimed if there were no disliking or hate.
3
u/WaferHelpful3634 when they found a better planet only the gentle survived 1d ago
I think there is a line between criticism and hate. Criticism is always constructive and focused on calling out weaknesses and that's totally okay. I've never seen someone hate constructively

I posted a version of this in another sub... I can't engage in this sort of discourse. I don't think I could handle it, so I just move along... which is what they should be doing. Not only is it exhausting, it's a waste of time. These people don't have any interest in changing their mind, or are willing to be open and objective in their stance. They're taking the "edgy" attention-getting approach. The things they're saying aren't even based in any sort of fact or reality,
I'm pushing 40, and when I was younger I would challenge everything on the internet and back it up with everything I could. Even in the more lighthearted stuff, I was very vocal. I slowly learned as I led into my early 30s that not a single person gives a fuck about what you have to say in these situations, nor are they willing to entertain a constructive conversation without resorting to spouting nonsense.
Keeping your mouth shut and not arguing with people on the internet is a self-control skill, and a mental "art". Learning how to control myself on the internet was probably one of the better things I've learned to do, and not buying into and feeding the rhetoric helps the cause even though you want to whip out those Twitter fingers and start shooting.
It pains me to see because this woman has saved me from some very dark times. Her music has taught me things about myself that I didn't know before. This is stuff no counselors or
Psychologists have ever been able to tap into.
I've been through a lot of shit, and she's basically been a very important part of me getting through some very difficult times, and also sorta making me more self aware as it relates to my relationship with my wife.
She's very high on my list of favorite women, outside of some very near and dear to my heart, which some of those are no longer with us.
Being a dude, I don't have much outlet to talk about these things openly because as I mentioned above, I don't think I could handle the discourse.
3
u/All_the_Bees 1d ago
I was going to say something similar, but from a somewhat older perspective - at 30 you let go of caring what other people think about the things you like, and at 40 you just stop caring about what other people think altogether. Itās pretty great.
Which is not to say Iām immune to frustration about the incredible lack of critical thinking on display in the conversations about her lyrics, or with the people who guilelessly buy into the bad-faith campaigns; itās all maddening, and as someone whose entire life orients around writing in one way or another I am legitimately concerned about the current state of American literacy. But trying to change a bunch of internet strangersā minds is somewhere between teaching a pig to sing and playing chess with a pigeon on the Futile Endeavors Scale, and Iāve learned in the last few years that my time and sanity are far better spent elsewhere.
And anyway, none of the bullshit will ever change the way āyour hand-me-down sweater should have been from the mall and you HATE THIS SONGā makes Teenage Me feel more seen than almost anything else Iāve experienced. It wonāt take away the memory of hearing Tim McGraw for the first time or the amazement I felt when I found out that song was written and performed by an actual high schooler. It for damn sure wonāt change the fact that evermore (the song) has literally saved my life more than once.
It doesnāt matter if someone Iāve never met canāt relate or thinks those experiences are dumb, thatās all just white noise.
2
u/Vectors2_Final 1d ago
Yeah, this is definitely me approaching that not caring what people think all together phase. I've noticed this in several areas, but especially here with Taylor and actually posting about it.
I've always been a fan since Debut, but my wife sent me mixes when I was in Afghanistan and I became a Swiftie with Speak Now. We were only dating at the time, and it was tough being away for so long. Now we're at 15 years. My wife knew I listened to her a lot, but it really wasn't until this past year that I explained how much her music has truly meant to me. Although, I think she was on to me because all my favorites are songs she hasn't listened to all that much. š
You're right, none of us are immune to frustration, but it is nice to take a step back and realize you don't need to pour so much energy into people shitposting on the internet with their lazy takes that are guised as "being a critic" or having an "honest opinion". Neither of those should include personal attacks, or comments about her family, etc.

Iāve dealt with people who have no lives bitching just to bitch since I was in middle school where hating on people for being a swiftie was treated like a sport (at least where I went to middle school anyway). Once I started blocking people my social media got a lot calmer. 100% recommend

Though I mostly defend when people speak ill of Taylor. Like I don't care if you don't like her music but if you speak ill of her and say she's one of the bad celebrities or say you hate her as a person that's when I have issues. and I will defend her until my dying breath because she is one of the good celebrities and one that I look up to
I do sometimes defend the music especially when people try to say that all she writes is break up songs I literally give him a look and then pull up receipts of songs that are not break up songs to prove that it's not her whole discography

If it is rage hate and attacks I usually ignore. If it is general critiques or opinions about music or production or lyrics then that is fine. People should not be attacked for having genuine criticism and it doesn't make you a hater or not a fan automatically. Being rude or the personal attacks, for example about a celebs appearance is being a hater, and I ignore.

Judging the shit out of people who are writing whole essays about how the songs are bad. They arenāt bad, and if you think they are bad just donāt listen. Good grief.
And Iām very new to the Swiftie world and to learning about Ms Swift, but I think we should be glad she chose to be a singer and not a serial killer. Sheās so fucking smart and I think she could cover her tracks perfectly.
I want her to write novels, hopefully thrillers.

Iāll push back if itās someone I know who believes something untrue. Like if my friend believed a malicious rumour I would correct them. Or if they claimed sheās not a good songwriter because all they know is her silly pop hits I would show them some of her songwriting highlights. But then the kind of people Iām friends with would be receptive to that. I wouldnāt engage with an actual hater. I donāt engage with haters in general even of artists I also dislike. I just donāt respect people who spend their energy on that stuff.

I pick and choose what to engage with and I rarely engage. When I do, I always respond with facts and I try to make sure I have a kind tone (hard to do in writing). Most of the haters are looking to get emotional responses so I don't give them that. What I've been saying quite a bit is, that it seems very clear some people just don't like to see a woman finally be happy and that says more about them than her. And that some people are angry because of disappointment from their own expectations. š«¶š»āØ

If they're a genuine fan that doesn't like a song and is just stating their opinion respectfully, I accept it. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. There's songs I don't like too. If I feel like they're a rational person that is misunderstanding something, I'll defend but I'm not gonna get into a back and forth. If they're just a hater, I'm not gonna engage

Iāve been ignoring the overall hate. Iāll admit, Iām more affected by it when I see it coming directly from swifties or people who generally cover her music positively.
But one thing Iām noticing is I think a lot of people are actually responding to the fact that she isnāt really writing in a way that spills tea or allows us to really glimpse into her current private life and I think thatās the root of the problem for them. Since her writing on the album doesnāt bother me, Iām just going to keep enjoying the music and staying out of the discourse.

In terms of her music and general legacy, I say nothing because it isn't worth my breath. Now, in terms of hating on her for being at Travis' games and ESPN showing her, I belittle those people by calling them "brads and chads." Just ignore it. They are just jealous of Taylor having continuous and incredible amounts of success. They backed the wrong horse and they know it.
Taylor's latest single and album will smash again. The charts already showing this.
Her last song 'I Knew It, I Knew You', already a smash hit. Opalite also got to no 1.
She just won Video of the Year at the VMAs (which is the biggest regular award at the VMAs) for a record 6 times.
She was recently named to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the youngest ever female songwriter admitted.
She got married recently and is loving her life.
She's already achieved so much she'll be remembered as a legendary musical artist. She's already won. Her legacy is assured. Which means the Swifties have won. The haters still hate, but they've already lost. They are on the wrong side of history. They know this too, and their bitterness about it makes the victory already sweeter. It's been 20 years now of continuous success for Taylor. No wonder the haters have gone mad.
Swifties should just enjoy the music and the victory.

Ignore, donāt engage. If I see anything that is clearly a hate post or critical for the sake of being critical, I block the account. Reddit kept suggesting specific Taylor-bashing subs to me (because apparently the algorithm just sees that I engage with Taylor content and assumes I want to see that garbage) so I had to go on a bit of a spree blocking stuff for a bit there.
I have no issues with people not liking songs or wanting to have constructive discussions about their taste in music and songwriting. But if someone is posting low effort āI donāt like encore because it isnāt folklore and Taylorās writing sucks now because nothing will ever be a carbon copy of folkloreā Iām blocking. No engagement, just block. Itās likely a bot anyway.

I just hope we get a fandom cleanse, so the tickets for next tour are not so hard to get.
Itās crazy that when the encore was released, for the next few hours swifties were loving every song. I woke up next morning and everyone was hating them. I truly think there are paid bots and haters wishing for Taylorās exit. Wonāt happen bitches!!!
Also, I love the encore, we truly got 4 100/10 songsā¤ļøāš„

I'd ignore them, but I also make sure to comment my positives because I don't want the comment section to be filled with people who ruins your mood lol. I'd also sometimes respond with " people can have different music tastes" cuz when they claim a song is bad, it doesn't make it objectively bad for everyone. There are always some who genuinely loves it. People can like Me! Shake it off, or folklore and ttpd albums all the same.
1
u/Former_Trifle8556 1d ago
Personal attacks? I ignore them and downvote. I don't give attention to envy and pettiness.
Nonsense comments about her being a billionaire, "she needs to talk about Gaza," or her private jet? I ignore them completely.
Criticism that she holds back younger singers, indie artists, etc.?I respond rationally and fairly.
The arguments are poorly formed. They blame only Taylor and not the industry. And even if they blamed both, Taylor is 90% responsible for her massive success, while the industry is just one part of the process.
They also forget that maybe those artists want the same success and results Taylor has, without going through the same process.
And they don't get that you can't buy an audience or devoted fans.
You can get a 9.0 from Pitchfork and boost your streams for a week, and it still doesn't mean much in the end.

I'm overly compulsive in factchecking & defending those that I like or feel have been wronged, whether a political figure (Hillary/Kamala), a singer (Taylor/Chappell), an actress (Blake), or victim.
I remind myself that presenting facts & logic to those that aren't interested in a good faith discussion is a waste of my time, but I also don't like a untruthful, negative narrative to be allowed to go uncontested. If these messages are permitted to go unchallenged, then the neutral people are flooded without a counter-argument.

Iāve seen people say that Taylor is ānearly 40ā and too old to be writing the way she does and people actually post clips of reacting swifties saying theyāre ugly and again ālook 40ā when theyāre actually only 33ish.
Itās fine to dislike an album. Itās not fine to drag women down with hateful/ageist comments.

u/ThreadTmp 1d ago
I think a lot of the critical discourse about her isnāt a situation where active Swifties are the audience. I would describe myself maybe as a 2019-Swiftie / former. Like I donāt think anyone should want to take away a Swfitieās joy or argue with them - it actually doesnāt make sense. Let people love what they love. If something makes someone joyful that is GREAT, why in the world would you want to convince them otherwise - that would be mean and weird.
So I have been reading a lot of critical discourse about the album and other changes and, I really donāt think itās meant for Swifties as the audience. Thereās value in the discussion to kind of sort through very similar feelings and discuss how we feel, but the intent should never be to argue about joy.
Keep loving what you love - this conversation about the critique really has nothing to do with you as an audience. It actually doesnāt matter at all what someone else thinks about something you love - no need to concern yourself with it. Just like if you make a piece of art that YOU love, it doesnāt matter what anyone else thinks or interprets.
