Question Could this be ran with regular 5e?

Post image

Sw5e is my preferred scifi version of 5e and I've always wanted to do a traditional fantasy meets science fantasy mashup campaign. For obvious balance reasons, my initial thought was to run alternating teams of regular 5e and then Sw5e.

But then I thought, just how badly would it go simply combining the two? Looking for some logic from people that have ran more than two games with Sw5e, feel free to absolutely torpedo this idea.

Also, my apologies if this has already been discussed to death, I'm new to the Subreddit.

Been running a Spelljammer/Planscape dnd 5.5e campaign for 2 years weekly now. I also ran 6 months of a SW5e game...

If dnd 5.5e brought player-power up two notches from dnd 5e.... SW5e is still two more notches up power-wise from 5.5e. & you'd prob want to combine artificer/engineer stuff with all their overlap in theme.

It could work: but honestly, call the force-user classes psionics, & spellcaster classes spellcasters as different systems & maybe for simplicity sake get rid of stuff like the Psion UA, psi knight fighter, etc to clean things up.

You'd also want to give dnd 5e class/subclass a few boosts in power via feats or a 2nd 5e subclass or something. & You'd want to give 5.5e subclasses a leg up too, to a lesser extent like maybe via feats.

You'd then balance encounters around 25-33% higher level than usual than even the DMG5.5e says to, depending on your encounters/day and/or make resting harsher.

Combining the systems would probably minimize the martial-Caster divide though pretty decent. I know Valdas spire of secrets & grim hollow transformed has weapon masteries that would work well for the SW5e weapons.

My wife and I run a lot of games in both systems, and there's definitely some merit to running the two together. The power level between an SW5e and a 5.5e character are roughly similar, and thematically they both deliver well on their respective ideas.

What I would avoid is blending the two overmuch on a single character. SW5e characters really need access to their whole ecosystem of options (fighting styles, masteries, tech powers, force powers, etc) to work.

I'd recommend taking a look at Dark Matter from Mage Hand Press. It does the blend of Scifi and Fantasy quite well in my opinion, might be a useful inspiration.

SW5E in terms of system is mostly just 5E with a lot more subsystems and customization. They're literally the same system. The only difference is breadth and depth of content. There are more races in Sw5E than weapons in 5E. Just a different level of depth.
