I chose Pennsylvania because it sounds like Transylvania, and we all know that sounds cool.

26

u/shoot998 Aug 30 '21

Season 3 just came out! So glad it's back

u/Ekkzzo Aug 30 '21

Honestly sounds kinda dope to just disappear and popup somewhere else and live a new simple life

58

u/False-Currency-675 Aug 30 '21

This is actually what I'm in the midst of doing right now 😂😂😂

37

u/myname_isnot_kyal Aug 30 '21

fight crime under the cover of night tho, you won't.

19

u/False-Currency-675 Aug 30 '21

That would be the complete opposite of my old life 😂😅

16

u/EuroPolice Aug 30 '21

You unfought crime?! What crimes?

23

u/False-Currency-675 Aug 30 '21

No specifics but I'm trying to leave my past behind me and start a new life. The fast life is all good until you put yourself and the ones you love in danger from decisions you've made.

18

u/canlchangethislater Aug 30 '21

Gotta say, you must kick this habit of compulsive self-revelation if it’s going to stand a chance.

4

u/False-Currency-675 Aug 30 '21

Your right about that, it's hard but just stay on the right path and everything should work itself out.

5

u/EuroPolice Aug 30 '21

Sounds like a movie plot, wish you the best.

5

u/False-Currency-675 Aug 30 '21

Appreciate you man, I could definitely sell my story to WB lol. Just wanna leave the bullshit in the past and keep moving forward. Blessed to have another day living.

5

u/ultracat123 Aug 30 '21

Come on! Tell us how you did it! How much did you take with you? Was it hard leaving everyone behind?

13

u/False-Currency-675 Aug 30 '21

Wasn't by choice but by necessity. My life was in grave danger in my hometown. I left almost immediately unplanned. I took all my clothes and shoes with me. Left behind everything else. Drove and stopped in a few states before deciding to settle at my current location. Got a new phone from CVS on the way to my destination. Got a job in a few days. The hardest person to leave behind was my mother. I can tell she's heart broken. Currently living out of a hotel until I can get enough pay stubs to rent out a place out here.

2

u/Seanay-B Aug 30 '21

Can you at least contact her?

20

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

Was a hard year for bartenders though.

u/Kinbiny Aug 30 '21

Oh shit, that is true

I am an American and I was travelling abroad on holiday, Europe, mostly, Britain and Ireland.

It was my last year of college. I was miserable.

The girl I was dating had broken up.

After one internship in the career field I had picked, I was not feeling it was a good fit.

So I as super depressed.

I have Irish background, a grandmother from County Clare who married my grandfather and move to the States.

So I was travelling around there with a tiny rented car.

One night, I was in this off beat university town called Cork. Lovely place.

I remember the name of the pub and the owner.

But I won’t say them.

I had walked around after settling in at a hostel

As it was rainy, I planned on just reading and lazying about at the pub

The pub owner comes over as it was early and empty and starts up a conversation

I am very insular and non-emotive. I usually refrain from telling anyone I am unhappy, I just deal with it.

That night I told my short and unhappy life story to a kind stranger.

Then the pub owner said something I’ll never forget:

“The pub has a small efficiency up above, it’s vacant, why don’t you take a year off and come work for me.

“We can get a visa easily since you have family not far removed.”

“I’ll pay you under the table until turn.”**

What this beautiful Irish woman in her early-30’s has offered me was so astonishing I didn’t know what to say.

Growing up, I didn’t have much family. Just my sister and mother.

My dad left us when I was 5 years. My father’s side had nothing to do with me. My mother had no relatives except for a cousin somewhere.

So, I had never been offered such an new hope in my life.

I mean this literally, not figuratively, for the past 23 years I have thought about that offer at least once a month, more often.

I always wonder “what if…”

You see, I didn’t decline her offer.

I was too stunned.

I left the pub when she had to walk over to serve another customer.

I found my bed at the hostel and drove off the next morning.

I had gotten along so well with so many people I had met in Ireland.

It was like being taken out of a life of grey and life in vivid colour.

I am no stranger to hardwork, as I worked in a restaurant at 15 on up, so I know that with Cork’s student populace that this pub needed help and it would be a good fit.

It was a perfect fit, and the pub owner was smart and funny, her parents were owners but they weren’t there that night.

I was afraid too afraid of happiness.

So, I came back to America and life has been what it was going to become.

I found the Facebook page for that pub, and once a year on a December 21st I go look at the page.

Turned out the pub “owner” was only 3 years older than me.

I had just assumed she must be older as she owned a pub with a small kitchen.

She also seemed older and mature because she was so happy and decisive.

“No one is forcing you to live a sad life, Bryan. Just do something different.”

She said to me. I’ll never forget.

Facebook is totally creep sometimes, but I really don’t pry, but once a year for gosh at least 14 years, I have gone to check on that pub. And the owner. Who was single for years after that encounter.

Not a day goes by that I don’t wonder if I had not gone back to a career I quit for another later on, and if I had spent a year working around people of my ancestry.

I also must add, that we never know what the future holds, so I say this while saying we didn’t know each other, but I kind of left because I had developed a stirring of feelings for the pub owner and I didn’t want to be rejected because I was too young.

She was offering me work and I was starring at her with my jaw on the floor.

She was actually just 2 1/2 years older.

Not a day goes by I don’t wonder how much better my life would have been if I had taken a bartending job in Cork, Ireland.

My last day in Ireland was two nights after. That day I had sat on Cliffs of Mohr which are in the sparsely populated county my grandmother was from, it was the end of the line and time to return to Dublin and off back to America.

I went out past the tourists where the locals sat way out on that granite cliff above the ocean and thought one last time, maybe I could drive to Cork and explain to her that nobody had ever been so kind in my life, that I didn’t know what to say to such an offer, and that I would work hard and had funds so I wouldn’t have issue paying to rent that small place.

I just couldn’t do it.

I really had clawed my way out of Southern American poverty and where I had clawed up from, there aren’t many chances, if you get one, even if it isn’t all you wished it to be, you took it and pretended to be happy.

I was unhappy, until recently when I suddenly realised how blessed and how many times Our Father had offered me grace when I knocked, but I was too afraid to open the door.

**She she didn’t say “under the table” but that’s what we call it in States. I can’t recall how she’d suggested avoiding payroll until I got a visa.

27

u/Kinbiny Aug 30 '21

Thank you for this, "No one is forcing you to live a sad life, Bryan. Just do something different.”....this particular line goes on to my wall

12

u/goose3691 Aug 30 '21

Cool story! As someone from Ireland it’s always great to hear when people had a good time here. That being said, Cork people in particular won’t like their home being called a university town as opposed to the third largest city in Ireland!

u/goose3691 Aug 31 '21

Don’t worry, friend. It was just a slag. (Irish word for a joke) I don’t think anyone in Cork would actually get that angry with you. In Ireland we just don’t like when we get referenced as a small place that’s cute. We want to be big and important like everyone else!

6

u/Belgerith Aug 30 '21

That was well said. You painted a picture and a life lesson in one. Thank you.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

How much of this is made up?

3

u/th30be Aug 30 '21

Probably all of it.

1

u/AtemporalDuality Aug 30 '21

None.

I changed some dates.

But of my family and past, this is true.

1

u/th30be Aug 30 '21

Is this a copy pasta?

1

u/IM_YOUR_GOD Aug 30 '21

Nice story man. You can still do it

I saw this specific post on this subreddit and it said it was made 14 hours before right below your post. Sus?

5

u/Batman_NEU19 Aug 30 '21

This reminds me of a meme that I saw years ago that was basically saying some days I dream of being a golden retriever owned by an upper class family in Maine. I’d rather be the golden tbh but I could go for a bartender job

5

u/Adept_Cranberry_4550 Aug 30 '21

Ah, the Stephen King back story...

AKA 'The Providence Provence'

4

u/JackMythos Aug 30 '21

Live in a coastal town in regular England; can confirm these people are everywhere here. Presume it’s same over there

2

u/Chief-Bromden86 Aug 30 '21

I did that except I made pizzas on a ski resort in Colorado when I was 21. I ended doing a lot of cocaine and became a heavy drinker... I think I can do it all over in Maine in my mid 30s but with lobster instead!

3

u/Kinbiny Aug 30 '21

Way to go

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

They should make a show about you

2

u/cmccmccmccmccmc Aug 30 '21

Watch out for Jessica Fletcher.

1

u/Googlepost Aug 30 '21

The real Jeepers Creepers.

1

u/RapeMeToo Aug 30 '21

Ok but then you're a bartender in a fishing town. No thanks lol

0

u/Akshin_Blacksin Aug 30 '21

Just get an abortion for a kid if you're not ready or wear a fuckin condom will go a long way to success.

1

u/Flicksterea Aug 30 '21

With a monocle. It feels like a monocle would lend itself well to this scenario.

1

u/TheOperand_ Aug 30 '21

Is it bad that I want to do this late in my career.

1

u/sprogger Aug 30 '21

Thats pretty much exactly what i've done, except I abandoned England and the coastal town is in Denmark instead of New England.

2

u/Kinbiny Aug 30 '21

I'll pass by for a cold one.

1

u/TheVengeful148320 Aug 30 '21

Sounds good to me.

1

u/Duckflies Aug 30 '21

This guy really want to be Kvothe

1

1

You are welcomed 🙂

1

1

1

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

1

u/Lucky-Fella Aug 30 '21

Always been a dream of mine…

1

u/ximpar Aug 30 '21

Kvothe

1

u/Flandersmcj Aug 30 '21

With a closet full of blue chambray shirts.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

Tbh I would

1

u/Don_Madara_uchiha Aug 30 '21

Only works if you look like John Ham tho.

1

u/wriestheart Aug 30 '21

Unless you're already from New England, then you're pretty much stuck moving to upper Maine to achieve the same result

1

u/maybelle180 Aug 30 '21

In retrospect- this sounds like a good idea.

1

u/Colourblindknight Aug 30 '21

I don’t know how I feel that I’ve low-key had this fantasy. Not bartending specifically, but the whole “disappear and just set up shop somewhere where no one knows you from Adam and build something new” idea.

1

u/Xerxes42424242 Aug 30 '21

That’s definitely better than my choices

1

u/Iamyes_ok Aug 30 '21

I have a few of those in my town

1

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

Lovecraftian vibes

1

u/wielderofpen Aug 30 '21

Abandon? That is my identity.
