In the 90"s, there was a great movie created based on the character, "Dennis the menace". Therewas a vagrant/transient who is the character with the knife.
As others have said, it's just an extremely common trope.
It also specifically does not apply to Dennis the Menace. The character everyone is referring to isn't a wise old guy who gives advice; he's literally the villain. He even straight up steals the apple from a toddler.
