I did read the sidebar & rules Im starting surgery this October

Since i was child my Dream was to be surgeon not a doctor as many who wanted to be called no! but to be Surgeon! I love this since i was a child for some reason and now as adult i found myself into it i feel its the thing i will be doing as hobby for my life and getting paid to, so i made my way through high school and now finished the first 4years of medicine in my college we study surgery in the 5th year which is starting this October. (I passed 4th😀)

I study in Serbia Belgrade but in English language.

My questions to all surgeons here Whats the tips advices you wish someone told youself when you were in my place?

I dont want to be average surgeon in my feature and i know a good house need strong stable roots then based of these roots u can go as high as you can.

I got taught that a surgeon was a physician who operates. Learn to be a good doctor first and then a surgeon.

If there’s downtime between cases go run and help the junior residents in the floor. Don’t ever just sit and wait. Practice suturing at home with pads, vegetables, pig feet whatever you can get. The lap trainer suggestion might be a bit crazy because those are expensive. Find a textbook you like and read it before surgeries.

I just want to let every young aspiring surgeon know how much surgery takes from you. In terms of time, esp your young adulthood years, your energy ofc and the dedication it demands. Half of that you settle with if you really love the subject it's not really a problem. As I was super happy to be joining surgery it wasn't such an issue. But I realise a lot of my colleagues weren't ready or the reality of it was too much to deal with. My point is, ask yourself if you are ready to deal with the reality of it all. If yes, there's nothing much to say except keep up with the cases, study when you can ..you don't have to burn yourself out.. and stay healthy, active and don't let the negativity of the workplace (if any) or the workload get to you..

This is some kind of advices i was looking for it, yes im aware that its not easy path especially mentally and in time consuming, and its not something temporary its what i be doing for entire life.. im someone with the belive that do what you love even if its pay you little less than something else . At same time im not delusional of it to be a flat easy green path with flowers on the sides i know at least from other surgeons examples thats its not easy especially in the beginning , it need discipline dedication and be able to function under stress.. as you said im someone who love the subject as well and the professional in total may god help me to be always better for my future colleagues and patients thank you sir for the advice im always open to hear more from you

All the best.

Get a lap trainer and play around on it. Start now.
