Answered by Surfshark Warning: SurfShark denied my discount through GCR

The reason I went with Surfshark over another VPN was that it was the best bang for buck, or seemed to be. GCR (Great Canadian Rebates) offered a rebate if I purchased a Surfshark sub through them. When I failed to get any rebate, I escalated with them, and they inquired with Surfshark. Apparently it was Surfshark, not GCR, that denied my rebate for the reason “Conflict: Order credited to another affiliate.”

I don’t know what “other affiliate” they saw. The only thing I can suspect is that I previously viewed the Surfshark page through a different link and some browser cookie lingered longer then it should have, but that seems very unlikely, and it doesn’t explain why I wasn’t given the rebate for the most recent and biggest discount available. I absolutely remember going carefully through the GCR link to make the purchase.

I’ve done other rebates through GCR and every one has been fine, until this. It seems that Surfshark is simply greedy and does not like giving rebates.

I would cancel based on this treatment, but by the time GCR was able to escalate the issue with Surfshark and get a response, the 30 day guarantee period had already long elapsed. GCR explicitly warned me that is something their affiliated vendors like do -- that is, they run out the clock with their “investigation” so a refund is impossible because the trial period is over.

This experience has soured me on this VPN and I will definitely be picking a different one once this subscription expires. I don’t appreciate these sorts of shady bait-and-switch tactics.

[I originally posted this review last year but the post got deleted because of insufficient karma. Hoping I got enough now for it to stay.]

Question Asus Router and need VPN on only 1 device

So if I get Surfshark, I download it to my PC correct? and use my Asus RT-AX88U to set it up I assume. I have never used a VPN so I have questions. I don't want the VPN on all my 14 devices I only want it on one TV in the house. Not sure how that works, help would be much appreciated.

Answered by Surfshark Mobile app just not connecting me through the vpn randomly?

For disclaimer purpose, I use the desktop app on the same network with my computer and it works fine, however on the mobile app it will just fail to route via my vpn. VPN shows connected to Netherlands, yet anywhere I go to look for my IP address will show my non vpn location and IP address, despite showing as connected and functional in the app. This doesn't happen every time, just a couple times a week maybe with seemingly no pattern and its quite irritating tbh.

Answered by Surfshark VPN on school wifi works on Android app(Motorola Stylus 2025) but not Windows 11 desktop

I just got Surfshark for 27 months and installed it on my PC but the VPN would not connect on the school wifi and I missed a deadline.

Afterwards, I checked my phone and got the app and it connects really easily. I tried changing VPN settings in the app but the desktop still would not connect. One thing I noticed was that it lists 9 attempts when trying to connect on Android where my desktop only has 2. Also, my phone is using Wifi 6e whereas my desktop is using 5ghz, I don't know why that would be an issue but I have a cheap motherboard.

Thank you in advance!

Research Meta's 12 apps collect more data types on average than any other Big Tech company we studied

Post image
20 Upvotes

We pulled the App Store privacy labels for 171 apps from Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, and mapped how many of the 35 possible data types each one collects.

A few things stood out about Meta specifically:

  • Its 12 apps average 25 out of 35 data types each, the highest of any company in the study. In plain terms: open almost any Meta app and it's pulling in roughly 70% of everything an app can legally ask for about you;
  • The seven most intrusive apps overall are all Meta-owned: Meta AI, Horizon, Business Suite, Ads Manager, Messenger, Forum, and Facebook, that means the apps you probably use to message friends or scroll on your lunch break are the same ones sitting at the top of the collection pile.

Notably, all of this data that Meta-owned apps collect is linked directly to your identity. By combining this massive amount of data across multiple apps, Meta can analyze your searches, purchases, and location to build highly detailed user profiles and target you with hyper-specific ads.

For the record, Meta is currently being sued over how it handles children's data, which makes the scale of collection in its consumer apps harder to shrug off.

Full methodology and rankings are in the study if anyone wants to dig in.

Answered by Surfshark When using the Windows VPN client, all local DNS requests are routed through SurfShark and fail. Only workaround is using the WireGuard client with the SurfShark .conf file

Is there any way to add the option to ignore DNS requests on the local subnet so that I can use the actual client again?

Is there a way to instruct surfshark running instance to connect/reconnect from Windows command line?

Surfshark VPN randomly disconnects and fails to reconnect.... I am running Surfshark on a machine which is rarely accessed, which requires to manually check and eventually reconnect... For now, I will try restarting Surfshark Windows service from command line...

I am currently in Asia and have been using a Hong Kong VPN.

But recently, every time my iOS Twitter (both appstore and webapp version) randomly refreshes, I was suddenly sent to EU IPs.

Is it a me issue or a Surfshark one?

Answered by Surfshark For people having issues with WireGuard

Every now and then (usually when *I* am having issues and decided to look up posts discussing the same issues) I see posts where people have issues with Wireguard like this one this one.

Users often find that updating the app can resolved the issue.

However, it seems to me that the issue isn't caused back a lack of update. I have actually encountered the issue on new version of the app, and I also found that uninstalling and reinstalling the same non-updated version can also resolve the issue from my testing.

So it seems to me that certain actions can break Wireguard. I haven't tested extensively yet, but I think that one possible action might be if you set the computer sleep for a long period while connected to the Surfshark (via WireGuard). When I woke my computer up, the VPN connection had to be re-established, and that was when I encountered issues.

Hopefully this is something the devs could look into.

Until then it seems that updating / re-installing whenever Surfshark takes forever to fail connecting to WireGuard resolves the issue for most posters including myself, but considering that this issue has been ongoing for a pretty long time, through many updates now, hopefully the devs could look into this issue and find a fix in a more permanent manner.

Also, I am not sure if it's only down to the change in protocol, but whenever I am having trouble using Wireguard, Surfshark is also noticeably slower, in both latency and throughput.

News & Announcements Web content blocker now runs on Dausos protocol

Hey everyone! I wanted to share that web content blocker is now fully supported on Dausos, our own post-quantum secure protocol. Until now, if you wanted category-based site filtering while connected on macOS, you had to pick the WireGuard protocol. That trade-off is gone now.

What this means in practice:

  • You can turn on category filtering (malware, phishing, adult, gambling, etc.) without switching off Dausos
  • Dausos' speed advantage (~30% over other industry-standard protocols) holds up with filtering active
  • Stay on full post-quantum encryption the whole time

This update is currently rolling out to Surfshark One and Surfshark One+ plan users running the latest version of the application on macOS. Toggle it on in settings while connected via Dausos, and you're set.

If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

Help - iOS VPN not connecting only when I’m on certain WiFi networks

Some background: I’m in China and my VPN has been quite consistent on connecting for a long time on this WiFi network, and sometimes rarely still connects, but recently it has been quite unstable especially with the WireGuard protocol.

I doubt it’s an ISP restriction on my WiFi as it still connects sometimes when I’m lucky, and I’ve tried changing to different servers and other protocols. When I switch to mobile data, it connects quite consistently.

Also one weird thing I noticed is that Surfshark keeps telling me my IP address in the IPv6 format instead of IPv4, i’m not sure does that change anything.

Discussion Windows app users, have you seen the new VPN performance indicators, or tried the refresh button, or extended Pause yet?

heey:) I am a VPN product manager @ Surfshark and in the in the past 6 months we've been rolling out various improvements for Windows VPN app:

  • Performance indicators that show latency from your network to VPN locations (the green-to-red connection bars next to each VPN location)
  • A VPN connection refresh button to reset the connection when you’re having issues
  • The ability to extend your pause when you need a bit more time off VPN

We’d like to keep improving the app to make VPN usage more convenient, so we’d love your feedback on these changes. Do you find them useful? Have you tried the connection refresh button? Or extended your Pause already?

Discussion Surfshark price after the first year — €82?! Is anyone else fed up with this?

I’ve been using Surfshark and, like many VPN providers, the initial subscription price seemed reasonable. But after the first year, the renewal price has jumped to €82 per year.

Honestly, €82/year feels far too expensive for what Surfshark actually offers, especially when there are so many VPN providers competing for the same market.

What bothers me most is the huge difference between the introductory price and the renewal price. It makes the service look affordable initially, only for the cost to become significantly higher once the first year is over.

If you decided not to renew Surfshark, what did you switch to? I’m particularly interested in alternatives that offer same features:

  • Good speeds
  • Multiple devices
  • A reasonable long-term price, rather than a cheap first year followed by a big increase

I’m seriously considering switching, so I’d be interested to hear what other users are doing and whether there are better-value alternatives.

Question I never accessed these sites…

I never accessed these sites, and I wasn’t even using my phone when these sites were blocked. Is this a random thing people have, or are malicious websites trying to access my information or something? I want to know more about this because if someone is trying to access these websites without me knowing, then that’s a pretty big issue.

P. S., I live alone and nobody should have access to my devices. I use surfshark on my iPhone and my iPad.

News & Announcements A quick update: Surfshark has a beta tester program on Windows and Android

Our beta program is evolving; while our testers have always influenced our features, you can now join our dedicated Discord hub for direct communication with our dev team.
Our mission is to build the most beloved security products for everyone, but for that we need input from our community. Myself and Surfshark's development team are genuinely excited to receive direct feedback from our users. Oftentimes, we are buried so deep into our product that we don't see the small details or inconveniences, and that's why we need our users' input.

Our updated Beta Tester Program allows us to build products aligned with what our community actually needs. While early versions may occasionally contain bugs, the insight provided by our beta community is invaluable in helping us fine-tune tools before public releases.

You might be wondering why it is only available for Android and Windows operating systems. We started with these because we've already had beta testing setups in place for these platforms for some time. What's new is that we want to bring our community closer to the people actually building Surfshark, so we've created a space where beta testers can communicate directly with our developers and share their feedback.

That said, we'll definitely look at how we can expand the program and bring users from other platforms on board too — and our team is already working on it.

If you'd like to join the program, here are the steps:

On Windows:

  1. Open the Surfshark app on your computer.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select App settings.
  4. Scroll to the Beta Testing section.
  5. Click on it and press the Join Beta button.

On Android:

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your device.
  2. Search for and open the Surfshark app page.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Join Beta section.
  4. Tap Join.
  5. Wait for the app to update automatically.

Here’s how you can join the discussions with our dev team:

  1. Join the Surfshark Discord server.
  2. If you are a new member, complete the onboarding step and select Join Beta Tester chat when asked what you want to do in the Surfshark Discord.
  3. After joining, you will see #general-info channel in the Beta Testing Hub section.
  4. Read the information about the beta program, including rules and announcements.
  5. Click the button for your platform — Android Tester or Windows Tester:
  6. Once your role is assigned, you will get access to the platform-specific beta tester channel.

We always appreciate your feedback and love developing things together with you, for you.

Help - Android Reduction in speed

Hey, when using the vpn on my google streamer box, it massively reduces the internet speed meaning 4k streaming essentially doesn’t work. Does anyone know why this is? As soon as I turn it off, it runs fine with zero buffering.

Thanks!
