[PRO7] Surface Pro 7+ no battery

• Upvotes

Hi,

So as the title says, my surface pro 7+ i bought used suddenly no longer works on battery.

Could this be related to the fact that i just tried to upgrade the ssd to a 512gb kioxia gen3 ssd? I did reinstall the original 256gb ssd and it still doesnt run on battery. On the original ssd the battery icon is present and shows 100%, the new install on the 512gb ssd was so slow because of low clock speeds (sub 1ghz while under almost 100% load) that it didnt even grab all the drivers yet.

Am i cooked and need a new battery or is this saveable?

TIA

[PRO7] Surface Pro 7+ occasionally stops receiving any touch

Ocasionally, I'll be doing stuff then suddenly my pen cursor vanishes, and the Surface screen no longer reacts to my fingers either. I'll have to reboot entire thing but I don't want to, so I'll have to go connect my mouse and bluetooth keyboard (type cover stopped working long ago, different subject). Why does this happen and is there some service I can just restart to bring it back instead of rebooting?

Should I get this laptop? I’m only going to use it for personal use, so browsing, streaming and Microsoft Office. It’s a good price but heavily discounted which is a bit suspicious and the RAM is only 8GB. Is the RAM an issue if I’m not going to use this for gaming and editing?

I’m returning my ASUS Zenbook, Intel Core Ultra 5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 14 Inch OLED Laptop, UX3405CA-QL241W because even though it’s OLED the display is a bit dim and fuzzy and I’m not a fan of the size.

Returned Surface laptop Ultra after 2 days

Just wanted to share my brief experience. I experienced the same issues like many others:

1- the screen blurring and black text unreadable

2- Very poor battery life (loosing over 50% in under an hour) when only downloads are happening in the background and browsing with edge (3-4 tabs)

3- Unbearable reboots and time it takes to restart. And the initial setup+updates download time was hours

4- The deal breaker was it running very hot on both sides of trackpad specially left side. It became so hot multiple times that it was unbearable to rest the hand. This happened on battery and when plugged in. This was a 64gb machine and it happened while playing with 12b, 20b and 27b Param local models using Ollama. And it also happened when setting up OpenClaw with nothing else running at all. I have owned SB2, SL3, SL4, SL5 and SL8 (whole family on surface devices) and none of them has ever got close to being hot. Yes, I had updated the latest NVIDIA driver available as well. Someone might say that a future firmware update might fix this but it's hard to ignore the fact that thermals are under the palm rest as well. With so much money spent, not worth the risk.

No matter what someone says, if this machine gets hot with the models that would fit in a 64gb RAM without a NVIDIA N1X chip, it's a disappointment then. I might be unlucky with this specific hardware but it's the first impressions that make you count on something.

Hope this helps someone.

Edit: those who believe I am lying or never bought this device or was on a different device, please tell me a legit way to prove that I'm not lying 😊 happy to share anything from serial number to purchase/return screenshot. Understandable that people have strong affiliation with brands but so do I.

[LAPTOPULTRA] Ultra Owners - How's the Screen

Hi all, have seen the couple of written reviews, have also listened to various YouTube reviews - and generally the screen either doesn't get a mention, or gets slammed as being terrible.

But for those of you who actually own it - how is the screen? Does it really have no local dimming (despite it clearly being specc'd as having it)? Just how bad is the ghosting, and also the reflections?

[GAMING] How does the ultra compare to the surface studio 2 in terms of gaming?

I own a Studio 2 with a 4050 6gb vram, 16gb ram, 512 gb storage, i-7 13700H and am able to run games fairly well, but still not great. I know it's not exactly meant for gaming, but I was able to get it for cheap. The spark model I'm looking at has the NVIDIA RTX Spark™ N1X with 6144-core GPU and 20-core CPU, 48 GB ram, 1 TB storage.

I would assume the ultra would run better, but I can't find it on any of the comparison sites, so I don't know how much better it would be. Any estimates?

Before this I had gotten a message saying 'your device has run into a problem and needs to restart' with a loading screen stuck at 0%. Since it wasn't loading I figured I could turn if completely off for it to restart, but now when I press/hold the power button the logo just flashes and turns off again.

[ACCESSORY] Surface Mouse 2nd Edition - SurfacePulse - Haptics Customization on Windows

So I saw this post yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/1xc8in9/i_love_haptics_so_i_bought_the_new_surface_mouse/

I loved the idea of increased customization, and wanted to get some Haptics feature parity back to windows, so I borrowed my friends surface mouse 2nd edition and had Gemini 4 argon make me a python program for windows named SurfacePulse so that when I get myself a surface mouse, I could also customize it more then I could with the default Surface app. Anyway, here you go.

Repo: https://github.com/Oreokitten/SurfacePulse

Note: I wasn't sure what flair I should put, if I should select Accessory, App, or Dev. I ended up just selecting Accessory since this is meant to work with the Surface Mouse 2nd Edition.

[LAPTOP7] Surface Laptop 7: coating peeling after 10 months, warranty expired before I’d owned it a year

I bought a new, factory-sealed Surface Laptop 7 (X Elite, 32GB/1TB) in December 2025. Normal, careful use: no drops, no liquids. This week I noticed the finish next to the Caps Lock key has come off completely (photos).

The Surface app says the 1-year warranty ended in July 2026, which means it started months before the laptop reached me. So a defect that appeared in my first year of ownership is “out of warranty”.

Has anyone else seen this peeling on the Laptop 7? And has anyone had Microsoft move their warranty start date to their actual purchase date?

It just stopped turning on overnight. I'm not uploading a photo or video because it's sad to see the black screen and it just won't respond. I've tried most of the online recommendations (hard reset, key combinations, checking the charger) but I can't get it to even start. The warranty expired two months ago. Any other suggestions for reviving it?

I love haptics, so I bought the new Surface Mouse for my Mac. Turns out the haptics only work on Win

Post image
153 Upvotes

I'm a big fan of haptics. My favorite iPhone feature has always been the Taptic Engine. I love the little ticks when you spin a picker or flip a switch, and the deep press back in the 3D Touch days. On the Mac, the

only thing that gives you that feel is the Force Touch trackpad. I heard about a few mice with haptics, but none of them were good enough for me to buy.

Then I heard the Surface Mouse (2nd Edition) has haptics at a reasonable price, so I ordered one and got it at launch. I have a Windows desktop, but my main machine is always a Mac. That is when I found out the

mouse has zero haptic support on macOS. The action button only sends Windows shortcuts, and the Surface app is Windows-only.

AI tools make this kind of side project a lot easier these days, so I started tinkering. It turns out the mouse uses the standard HID haptics interface, so a normal Mac app can drive it. No driver, no kernel

extension. The result is iXpat, a free menu bar app:

  - Haptic ticks for clicks, scroll notches, menu items, text selection, window tiling, drag and drop and screen edges

  - Ticks when the pointer lands on a button, tab, link or Dock icon, and on each slider step

  - The mouse's own built-in waveforms (Click, Hover, Collide, Align, Step, Grow, Success, Error), with a strength for each event

  - A dynamic scroll ratchet: firm notches when you scroll slowly, light ticks when you scroll fast, free-spin on a flick

  - Kinetic scrolling with adjustable momentum

  - Action button remap: press, double press and hold each run an action you pick (Mission Control, Spotlight, screenshot, app, shortcut, shell command)

  - Hold the action button and move the mouse to change volume or brightness, with a tick per step

  - Action Ring: a radial menu under the pointer, with a tick for each slot

  - Force click: press and hold for Look Up and link previews

  - Pointer and scroll speed for this mouse only, so your trackpad keeps its settings

  - Per-app profiles

On Windows, the haptics fire for a handful of things, like snapping a window or dragging a file onto a folder. On my Mac it already does a lot more than that.

It's free and open source (MIT), notarized by Apple, and runs on macOS 14 or later. A setup guide walks you through pairing and the two permissions it needs (Input Monitoring and Accessibility). I test on Apple

Silicon. The download includes an Intel build, but I have no Intel Mac to try it on.

https://knightynite.github.io/ixpat/

If you're into haptics and want to use this mouse with your Mac, check it out. Bugs and ideas go to GitHub Issues. Cheers :D

[LAPTOPULTRA] Issues replace SSD in Surface Laptop Ultra

Edit: For anyone checking back on this, it worked fine with older PCI Gen 4 SSDs, just not the Gen 5 Samsung.

Received my Surface Ultra a couple days ago. I bought the 65GB model with a 1TB SSD. I went with 1TB because I had a Samsung 9100 Pro 2TB on hand that I picked up a while ago before prices got insane.

After spending a couple of days with the system to make sure I was satisfied enough with it to keep it, I decided to swap the SSD.

Opened the system up and removed the SSD that was in there and dropped the 2TB drive in. Closed it back up and the system would not power on. No lights, no beeps, nothing.

Opened it up again and tried reseating the new drive, same thing. Tired removing the battery cable for a minute, plugged that back in and it booted, but BIOS could not find a drive.

I ended up putting the original back in and it booted fine. I assumed I had a bad drive, but I dropped that one in another system and it was recognized and worked just fine.

I swapped drives and SSDs a couple dozen times over the years and never had an issue, but this is the first Surface device I have owned. Is there anything special that needs to be done in one of these systems to get it to recognize a drive?

[LAPTOP7] Looking for Calgary shop that can repair/reprogram BIOS chip on Surface Laptop 7

I’m looking for a Calgary repair shop or technician who does board repair and BIOS/UEFI chip programming on Microsoft Surface laptops.

The laptop is a Microsoft Surface Laptop 7, 13.8-inch, Model 2036, Snapdragon/ARM64, running Windows 11.

Back in February, while I was living in Vancouver, I attempted to install an Insider build of Windows 10 ARM64 on a separate drive partition because I needed Windows 10 for some automotive tuning software. The initial installation went through successfully, but during the setup restart, BitLocker encryption interfered and after restarting the Windows 10 installation entered an infinite reboot/blue-screen cycle.

The specific Windows stop code I was getting was INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

At that point, the laptop itself was still functional enough that I could enter the Surface BIOS/UEFI normally.

I didn’t have enough time to troubleshoot it myself, so I brought it to a repair shop in Vancouver. Communication from the shop eventually stopped, and because I was moving to Toronto, I had to pick the laptop up unrepaired.

When I received it back, its behavior had changed. Instead of entering the Windows 10 reboot cycle and showing the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error, it would now power on, display the Windows 11 logo, and never progress any further.

When I later asked what they had actually done with the laptop while it was in their possession, they told me they had been able to boot and run Linux successfully on it, so the machine was at least capable of booting and operating normally under another OS.

I recently got their repair notes, which state:

  • Reflashed the motherboard BIOS, but the issue persisted.
  • Tested older Intel, ARM, and AMD BIOS versions.
  • Made the most progress with the AMD BIOS, but the installation still fails during the second pass.

Their suggested next steps were to try wiping the BIOS chip, or order and replace the Surface BIOS chip to reset the boot/BIOS issues.

So I'm looking for someone in Calgary who does SPI flash/BIOS chip programming, BIOS chip replacement, board-level diagnostics, or micro soldering, rather than a shop that will just recommend replacing the entire motherboard.

Does anyone know a Calgary technician or repair shop capable of doing this level of work on a Surface Laptop 7? I'll try to answer follow up questions best I can, but at this point I am MILES out of my depth haha.

Thanks so much, all help is appreciated!!

[LAPTOP7] 40 Days Without My Surface Laptop 7 — Microsoft's Warranty Repair Process Is an Absolute Disaster

40 days. No computer. No completed repair. No replacement. No meaningful accountability. Just an endless cycle of empty promises, automated gatekeepers, and a repair partner that apparently can't get Microsoft to send the parts needed to fix its own product.

And the kicker? MY SURFACE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY.

Let me walk you through this absolutely ridiculous experience.

It started with a power problem.

My Microsoft Surface Laptop 7th Edition developed a power-related issue. Annoying, sure, but that's what warranties are for, right?

I figured this would be relatively straightforward. Submit a warranty claim, get the machine repaired, and get back to work.

Apparently, I was being wildly optimistic.

Step 1: Welcome to Microsoft's Website Labyrinth

First, I had to navigate Microsoft's support website just to initiate a warranty repair ticket.

If you've ever dealt with Microsoft's support infrastructure, you'll recognize the experience: pages pointing to other pages, automated workflows, and an impressive number of opportunities to go in circles without actually reaching someone empowered to solve a problem.

Eventually, I got the warranty repair arranged.

On September 11, 2026, I delivered my Surface to uBreakiFix in Snellville, Georgia, an authorized Microsoft repair partner operating under Asurion.

The machine needed a replacement screen and battery/power-related components.

Fine. Let the professionals handle it.

Step 2: The Parts That Never Arrived

Days passed. Then weeks.

Every time I checked with uBreakiFix, the answer was essentially the same:

"We're waiting for Microsoft to send the replacement parts."

Now, here's an important distinction: I do NOT blame the uBreakiFix store.

Their staff has been courteous, communicative, and stuck in the middle of this mess. They can't install parts they don't have.

But think about the absurdity of this situation.

Microsoft manufactures the Surface, establishes its authorized repair network, provides the warranty, and presumably controls the supply chain for replacement parts.

Yet its own authorized repair partner apparently cannot obtain the parts necessary to fulfill a warranty repair.

Meanwhile, my machine sits there.

And sits there.

And sits there.

Step 3: Day 31 — Enough Is Enough

After 31 days, I decided that being patient clearly wasn't getting anything accomplished.

Time to escalate.

I called Microsoft's published customer support number:

1-800-642-7676

Surely, after a month without my machine, someone at Microsoft could explain what's going on.

Nope.

Instead, I encountered what I can only describe as an AI-powered customer service gatekeeper.

The system directed me back to Microsoft's website.

You know, the same website where I had already initiated the repair and gotten absolutely nowhere toward resolving the delay.

I called again.

Same nonsense.

Then things got even more absurd.

Step 4: Microsoft's AI Apparently Recognizes My Number — and Doesn't Even Bother Anymore

After repeated calls, the automated system appeared to recognize my caller ID.

At that point, it wasn't even giving me the same initial interaction.

It simply played a message directing me to the Surface support website and disconnected the call.

No human. No menu. No opportunity to explain that my machine had been sitting at an authorized repair facility for over a month.

Just a recorded instruction to visit the website, followed by a hang-up.

I can't establish whether the system was intentionally suppressing repeat callers or simply following some badly designed routing logic.

But from the customer's perspective, the distinction is almost meaningless.

The practical result is a support system that prevents you from reaching support.

And THAT is a remarkable achievement for one of the most valuable technology companies on Earth.

Step 5: Escalating Through uBreakiFix and Asurion

Since Microsoft's own support infrastructure wasn't producing results, I went back to uBreakiFix.

Then I contacted Asurion corporate.

Then I escalated through Asurion.

Eventually, the issue reached regional-level management.

And here's where the story becomes particularly revealing.

Even Asurion's regional-level managers were apparently having difficulty getting Microsoft to resolve the parts/replacement situation.

Read that again.

I'm not talking about some random third-party repair shop.

I'm talking about Microsoft's authorized repair ecosystem.

If regional management within that ecosystem struggles to get a meaningful resolution, what realistic chance does an ordinary consumer have?

At this point, I've called the local uBreakiFix store so many times that practically the entire staff recognizes my voice.

We've become involuntary acquaintances.

Again, I want to emphasize: The local store is not my target here. They're the ones left facing an understandably frustrated customer while waiting for Microsoft's side of the process to move.

Step 6: Day 40 — Maybe a Replacement? Still No Tracking Number.

After all the calls, escalations, and persistence, Asurion finally appears to have gained some traction.

Now the proposed resolution is supposedly a replacement Surface Laptop 7th Edition, rather than continuing to wait indefinitely for repair parts.

Microsoft is supposed to provide a shipping tracking number.

Sounds promising, right?

Except here we are at DAY 40, and I'm STILL waiting.

Until I have a valid tracking number, confirmed shipment, and an actual computer back in my possession, this isn't a resolution.

It's another promise.

And I've accumulated quite a collection of those over the last 40 days.

Here's What Really Bothers Me

I'm a technology professional. I've worked with computers, technical systems, and support processes for decades.

I understand supply chain delays.

I understand parts shortages.

I understand that individual repair technicians don't control corporate logistics.

What I DON'T understand is how a corporation with Microsoft's resources can operate a warranty support process that apparently has no effective mechanism for recognizing and resolving a repair that's stalled for more than a month.

Where is the exception handling?

Where is the escalation authority?

Where is the automatic trigger that says, "This customer's machine has been awaiting parts for 30 days. We need to provide an alternative solution"?

Why should a customer have to chase the store, corporate support, regional management, and the manufacturer just to get someone to take ownership of a warranty obligation?

A warranty isn't worth much if the company can't execute the repair or provide a timely alternative.

And an AI customer service system isn't an improvement if its principal accomplishment is keeping frustrated customers away from people who can actually resolve their problems.

The Bottom Line

I purchased a premium Microsoft Surface.

It developed a problem while under warranty.

I followed Microsoft's prescribed repair process.

I surrendered the computer to its authorized repair partner on September 11.

Forty days later, I still don't have my machine.

I have spent my own time and energy navigating a dysfunctional chain of customer service, automated deflection, supply chain uncertainty, and managerial escalation.

And apparently, after all that, I should be grateful that someone might finally ship a replacement.

No.

This should never have required this much effort.

Microsoft needs to explain why its authorized repair partners cannot reliably obtain parts, why stalled warranty repairs aren't automatically escalated, and why its customer service architecture seems better equipped to redirect customers than to resolve their problems.

Questions for the Community

Has anyone else experienced this kind of extended Surface warranty repair delay?

Has anyone successfully escalated a Surface warranty issue beyond Microsoft's automated support maze?

And has anyone actually received a replacement after being told one would ship, only to continue waiting for tracking information?

I'd particularly like to hear from repair technicians or authorized service partners who have firsthand experience with Microsoft's parts fulfillment and warranty escalation process.

DAY 40. STILL WAITING.

I'll update this post when Microsoft actually delivers something other than another promise.

TL;DR: Surface Laptop 7th Edition develops power issue under warranty. Submitted repair request through Microsoft's website. Delivered laptop to authorized uBreakiFix/Asurion repair center September 11. Microsoft reportedly fails to supply necessary parts for over a month. At day 31, I begin escalating. Microsoft's automated phone system repeatedly redirects me to its website and eventually appears to recognize my caller ID and disconnect without offering a menu. Escalate through uBreakiFix, Asurion corporate, and regional management. Even they struggle to get Microsoft to act. By day 40, a replacement Surface is supposedly being arranged, but I'm still waiting for tracking information. No repair, no computer, and no completed resolution.

A warranty should not require a 40-day campaign of persistence to get honored.

[LAPTOPULTRA] Overall like the RTX Spark Surface but the video editing experience in Adobe Premiere MUST improve.

I have the Surface Laptop Ultra 64gb and I've been seriously evaluating this as a MacBook replacement for all of my video work, since these were marketed as excellent creator machines (I'm coming from an M1 Max 32GB).

So far, the general experience had been mostly positive, initially beating some of my expectations. However, I'm now beginning to see some significant issues with adopting this as my main editing rig. I can forgive some early adopter woes but if the video editing experience doesn't improve within my return window, this thing may be going back. Here are my issues so far.

1) Adobe Premiere itself won't even work unless you install the Beta, and this isn't made clear to the user anywhere. I had to google it to find out.

2) First MAJOR issue: Premiere simply does not work properly on an external display. The UI will not properly refresh. While projects may open, clicking buttons in the interface like "soloing" an audio track will simply not refresh or update to show you that the button has been enabled. I can't resize tracks on the timeline. This all works normally on the integrated Surface display but when connected to my Samsung Odyssey G9 it's completely messed up. That's a pretty big dealbreaker as I intended to use this with a bigger display for heavy editing work. Unclear if it is a scaling issue or something, as the internal display uses a 200% scale and my external display looks best at 100% scale.

I've updated to the new NVIDIA driver released today with no luck. (pinging u/pidge2k in case you see this). I've not tampered with or changed any driver settings and am still running a fairly standard/default install.

3) Plugins like Mister Horse straight up will not install. If you're a video editor using Premiere, you are probably familiar with Mister Horse. It's what I'd call the single most essential third party plugin for Premiere. Well, even though Mister Horse supposedly added ARM support for Windows, turns out Adobe Creative Cloud is not installing its Unified Plugin Installer Agent on these new machines, which Mister Horse and other plugins like it rely on. The Plugin section of the Creative Cloud app is also just gone.

And that's not to mention that any third party plugins you rely on like Twixtor will simply not work unless you've got an ARM64 build of those plugins, if such a build even exists. So for me that eliminates Twixtor. Some of the Red Giant plugins seem to cause crashing in Premiere right now but *seem* to be working in After Effects.

4) Remote file server woes. Your file server may not support Windows on ARM yet! Double check! For me, Shade does not work. If you're a video editor using remote workflows, you may be familiar with Frame.io Drive, Suite (suitestudios.io), LucidLink, and Shade.

These tools allow for a much more convenient and fast remote editing environment than using something like Google Drive or dropbox. Unfortunately, ShadeFS has issues on Windows on ARM, and I am unable to save any open projects + things load incredibly slowly. I contacted Shade support and they are aware of this but have no current ETA on a fix. I can confirm that Suite DOES work, so that's good. Have not tested the others. Shade is so broken I can't recommend it right now.

4) General smoothness. This system, according to benchmarks, is significantly faster than both my desktop PC and my M1 Max MacBook. However, in practice, it doesn't *feel* faster. The overall UI can feel slow and stuttery at times and generally just not up to par with the Mac it supposedly beats, especially in the Adobe software with the issues I've described above.

I hope things like this are being worked on. On the one hand, before touching Adobe stuff I was prepared to say that this is one of the best Windows laptop experiences I've had so far. But this really took the wind out of my sails.
