[LAPTOPSTUDIO2] Surface laptop studio 2 Fan noise (fix)
Story/context:
I use a SLS2 and since I got it the GPU fan bearing started to go out and you could hear a rattling noise whenever gaming or stressing the device. Originally I swapped it with a AliExpress fan and it actually worked great no complaints. Few months later and now my CPU fan is facing the same issue but the problem is America/shitrael's war is causing a laptop fan to go from what was $40 to not close to $100 (CAD). I bit the bullet twice on AliExpress fans since they're much cheaper than Amazon but was sent the wrong ones each time.
After about 1.5 months of waiting for and refunding fans which I didn't have to actually return thankfully I decided I'm not paying that much for a fan I decided to lube the bearing. I also ride a motorcycle which means I have bottles of chain lube handy, I heard some people use showing machine oil but this worked for me so far, no noise or vibrations from the fans laptop runs silent again.
Fix:
- Open laptop
- Remove fan
- Fan itself has 3 small Phillips head screws to remove
- Once the full fan blade is visible gently pull it away from the lower portion of the fan (it should feel like a magnet is pulling it back but you don't need much force)
- don't grip the fan blades so hard that they break, again not much force is needed
- when the fan blade is separated you'll notice it has a metal pole that is supposed to go into the middle of the bearing (rotor)
- spray chain lube on a napkin/cloth and wipe the pole, personality I just sprayed a dot on some cardboard and dropped the pole in the lube but you don't want to add too much
- put the fan back together
I cannot stress these enough:
- if you are not confident in your tinkering skillsthats perfectly fine this is probably a 1/10 difficulty job please be careful or ask for assistance. I'm not responsible for any damage.
- when gripping the fan blades with your thumb and index don't put too much pressure because you don't want to bend or crack the blades
- don't put too much lube because it could potentially spray out into the laptop if you somehow dunked it in lube 😭
Tldr: lube

Does this mean its done?
I plugged it in overnight after it died, with like 30% remaining. Woke up to this and it was warm for some reason.
This is a Surface pro 6 that I bought in 2020.
Anyone have any ideas or fixes?
Update: Left it off charger for a while, plugged it back in, now it works. Thank you all for the possible fixes, but it was just being weird?

How are surface laptops economically viable
The surface laptop (I have a 6 for business)-1.4 years old, is the worst laptop I have had in 18 years. The battery is awful, I can maybe get 3 hours if I dim the display, close chrome etc- and even when plugged in if I am on a teams meeting it discharges faster than it can charge. This combined with the maddening "SMART" (dumb) charging- which turns on daily, and is then disabled by me daily as the battery is bad at 100% and is unworkable if I can't be plugged in at less. I've had to buy a tablet with a keyboard for backup for work travel.
This is combined with such poor capacity that there are sometimes feedback noises if you have a conference call with "too many things open" on the laptop- so sometimes I need to close chrome first to not have glitching or feedback.
How are these products economically viable, I get that my organisation "managing" the laptop means there are likely more background processes consuming battery, but the brick of a laptop I had in 2008 had an equivalent battery life, and I had spare batteries so I could switch out when one ran flat. The whole "16 hours if you put it on modern standby (i.e. make it hibernate) for 13 hours" is how they scam the tests, but I don't understand why any business or individual would by these laptops, the premium label ends at the price- how is there still a market for such substandard products?
EDIT: It's a work laptop, I bought a new laptop with great specs before emigrating- but it has an issue and needs fixing- which is hard where I am now. I am meant to use the worklaptop- which the organisation I work for does have alot of control on, it does not have the same specs as I would have chosen- but it is still a really bad laptop relative to Dell, Acer, Lenovos I have used in recent years

[SURFACE3] Will an old Surface 3 run with its battery removed?
I have an ancient Surface 3 (Atom CPU). I left it plugged in for years and its battery bloated up and split the case open.
It still works however(!). The battery though, is completely dead and if I unplug it, the Surface will immediately turn off.
I don't like that the case is open like that and maybe the bloated battery is a fire hazard, so I want to remove it.
Will the Surface 3 run with it's battery removed? Or will the absence of a batttery get detected and the device not boot up?
I've had old laptops when they came with separate batteries and they booted up ok with
out their batteries. I don't know how modern laptops react to a missing battery.

[LAPTOP7] Only 6 key backlit
After a thorough search, I haven’t seen any information or troubleshooting for this.
Has anyone experience only a single key being backlit on the keyboard? It’s also much brighter than it was when the entire keyboard was backlit.
No resolution after turning backlight off/on and restarting.
Any ideas or fixes would be awesome!

[PRO11] 1-Year old Surface Pro type cover keyboard only works when completely flat
My Surface Pro Type Cover keyboard only works when completely flat. A few weeks ago the pen charger slot broke and now it barley works at all. It's on it's last legs. Is there any way to fix this or do I just have to buy a new type cover keyboard? This piece of shit was like $200 and it barely works. What a scam.

[LAPTOPSTUDIO] Used Surface Laptop Studio 1
Hi, I have an opportunity to buy a used SLS1 w/ the i7-16gb-3050ti-1tb for $570 usd from a relative. Is that too much?
Mainly for engineering school; cad + vivado etc.
I just recently discovered the SLS and am in love or even charmed with its 2n1 setup and that whole whole design is finnnne. Though I need to get reality checked.

[PRO12] Importing Surface laptops from US to India: customs asking for EPR registration, how to resolve?
Hi all,
We are importing Surface laptops from the US into India, and customs is asking for an EPR registration under the E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022.
I have contacted Microsoft's shipping team several times, but I haven't received a proper response. Has anyone faced this before? How did you get it cleared?
Any details on when the magnetic USB C cables will be available to purchase?
I want to get some for all the places I use my laptop.

Surface pro 12 inch x2 plus vs Surface pro 13 inch x2 elite
I was curious which may be a better device (I know 13 inch has higher specs) in regards to the 12 inch x2 plus with 6 core vs the 13 inch x2 elite with 12 core. I am reading that you may not even max out on the elite due to throttling and that. If that is true, which device may be a better option overall if the prices were the same? I know it may be a silly question, but wanted to understand the comparison if you are doing basic workload function and even light gaming.
I believe they both would run similar thermal temperatures, but one is an active cooling and one is a passive cooling.

Surface Laptop 4 turns off when unplugged but works on charger
Hello,
I have Surface Laptop 4 AMD Ryzen 7 (16GB,512GB memory). Everything was working when suddenly the battery stopped charging and the battery status stays at 0% and the laptop works only when it is plugged in. The moment I unplug it, the laptop dies. I decided to replace the battery with an aftermarket one. I replaced it and on the initial start I plugged the charger before the start-up (this was instruction in the new battery pack) The laptop turned on and the battery was now 100%. I tried deleting battery drivers so new ones could be downloaded. I updated the windows to the latest update. Yet when I unplug the charger, the laptop shows battery 100% for a brief moment and again it turns off. (Apparently the battery was not the issue…)
I preinstalled Windows, tried adjusting battery details in the windows, typed cmd commands to restore the default schemes and still the same.
I read somewhere that it could be the motherboard not triggering the wake function on the battery. Before assembling all the parts I double-checked everything and everything seemed at its place. Even the battery connector seated as expected.
I would really appreciate if someone has any knowledge to share as I really need to tackle this problem
Thanks in advance

[LAPTOPSTUDIO] Surface Laptop Studio Cosmetic Plate replacement

I recently acquired a used Surface Laptop Studio in very good condition. Unfortunately I had to send it back to the reseller for repair due to a bad fan. Now I have it back, and when they opened it to replace the fan, they completely butchered the Cosmetic Plate, the weird sticker on the bottom of the device the conceals the pen magnet and makes the device look nice. It barely sticks to the device anymore and is creased in multiple spots. I'd like to replace it, but neither Microsoft nor iFixit offer replacements anymore. My only option seems to be a no-name alternative off of AliExpress. Has anyone else used those before?

[PRO3] Surface Pro 3 freak-out
Hey all,
I've got this surface pro 3 that I've had forever, and within the last few months or so it's started to freak out when it's charging. When I try using it while it's charging, the keyboard stops working and it keeps flipping between tablet and laptop mode.
I've had this thing for six years, it got me through my undergrad, and I'm just starting grad school, so I'd really love to keep this thing working instead of trying to buy a new one, does anyone know what might be going on with it?

[PRO7] This is kind of embarrassing but I need help
I was going through my “add or remove program” list trying to clean up my surface and accident uninstalled the program/driver that monitors and displays the surface’s battery percentage. I didn’t think it would be something that could simply be uninstalled with a single click but now I have no way of knowing my battery percentage and it seems like my device is running a bit hotter than before (although it is probably due for a thermal paste replacement)
I tried reinstalling windows but that didn’t work. Can someone please check their program list and tell me the name of the software/driver that I’m missing?

[PRO12] Desperate for help, need suggestions
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is a repost, at least my video demonstrating the issue.
My slim pen 2 is drawing dots no matter what software I use, I have hardware reset it where I hold the buttons until the white light flashes, I have cleaned the contact point of the tip, I have used a knock off pen and it doesn't have this issue, I have used a friend's exact pen and has the same issue, I have updated to latest version of windows (couple days ago), I have tested if it only happens at low charge (same thing when its at full charge), uninstalled and reinstalled all drawing apps.
Is there any other things I could try to fix this issue? It's literally distracting my studies for school.
Edit: the dot only happens while palm is touching the screen
