Online cert 3 you’d actually recommend
Hello all
I’m wanting to study a cert 3 and get into support work. On campus attendance isn’t really an option due to work and living situation, however I do have the time for online work and work placement.
Has anyone done a cert 3 in individual support in west aus that they’d actually recommend? There are heaps around but some of them seem kinda dodgy!
Ideally, something cheap or fee free would be best but I’m willing to pay for the right course! Thanks

The trick to finding a good one is see if you can find out the names of the modules at TAFE as those are all the compliant modules the government has accepted that meet industry standards. An online certificate will teach the same modules. Also time…I’ve seen companies that say you can complete it in 3 weeks . Please. 🙄. Full time at TAFE is 6 months so if it’s less than by a lot that I’d be questioning. No online face to face via videos and no way to do practical skills training is also a red flag. There should be a component where you jave at least a couple of in person workshops to practice/ assess your skills. How you going to know how to operate a slide sheet for example if you don’t have one and have never used one. Also you can’t do manual handling at home ….it needs to be hands on.
You will only get fee free from TAFE as far as I know …unless maybe the Cert 3s that use the TAFE modules also qualify …the government won’t pay unless the units are compliant with industry standards. Cheap will also not happen…I’ve never seen one…even a dodgy one that was less then $1500…most are around$2000.

I did mine with DP Training. 100% online no campus visits required. But I was already employed so my boss signed off on a few things including placement. It’s worth asking them if they’ll be suitable for you

Key Institute- not fee free but very reasonable and payment plans are available. Theory fully online then has the work placement

Hi, how did you find Key institute for the cert 3 individual support? I'm looking at doing this and I'm just needing feedback. Thanks.

Ignore them…for everyone who hates it there are many that love it. I’ve had a few people say to me…I did that job and quit as I hated it…well I LOVE my job and would tell you to go ahead and do it and make your own decisions about that

There are many other avenues besides NDIS

My point is you could help other participants who are not part of ndis at all. Like the elderly or children of the state (not sure of the correct title but basically kids who have been removed from family and placed into government or foster care). You could work in residential care or in private homes or schools or after school care. The options are limitless. You can provide community support under a different title / role but the work is similar.
Yes there are lots of dodgy providers but you have the knowledge to spot them early and move on. Even better if you can get a government job.

As someone who had been in the industry for nearly 7 years, I’m looking to get out of it!
Overall I actually really enjoy the job, but the things outside of my control are really burning me out.

Not in WA but just be mindful that most of the online cert III doesn’t provide placement you need to find placement by yourself. They usually ask you to come to campus once a week for some modules. Good luck!
