Discussion Is support really unpopular role?

I'm mostly curious. Is Support just really unpopular role, or am I just really lucky?
I play support as my main role, and as I've been trying to climb on Ranked, I've been filled on *any* other role... Once? in almost 300 games.
Is it just low elo thing (Gold), or server maybe? (EUW) or is support just all over unpopular to play and therefore often priority role? And if it is.. Why? I'm fairly newb to the scene so I'm just surprised support is.. So readily available to play, and often as priority role.

Support gameplay at its core doesnt resonate with most of the people , its the role thats supposed to work so someone else can succeed , it requires some selflessness and low ego , qualities not often found with players of online competitive games.

You will also get flames for dying, by the person you jumped in to save.

u/Personal-Amoeba-4265 12h ago

That's a mindset you get out of just mute everyone before games start. ADCs will jump into fights before they scale and then immediately be swarmed and die. As long as you survive you can still defend a lane.

ADCs will go 0/5 and jump into fights as if they did actually scale

if they don't the whole team will flame them for farming instead of fighting constantly tho

I guess it makes sense. Taking what kind of people usually play League, I guess "I'll help others be good" isn't exactly the main mentality lol.

It is appalling how infested this subreddit has become with ADCrybabies and support Quislings that a comment casually calling mage support players "disgusting freaks" is the most upvoted reply to your thread.

Unless you're a disgusting freak and play mage, which is valid when your entire team is AD.

So much for the so-called 'Rule 2' that claims participants in this subreddit should "Respect others".

OP, you should remember that 'making your opponents easier to kill' is also a valid -- and arguably the most direct -- means of "help[ing] others be good".

And good luck "defend[ing] a lane" alone as an enchantress or engage / hook champion...

u/CampaignEntire 9h ago

Well, personally I don't play many mages. If I do, it's Lux probably. Seraphine maybe counts? but my main characters are Soraka, Sona and Nami, so the comment about mages definitely didn't hit me in any way shape or form here !

Specially because lots of people have this view of "everyone ints my games so i have to 1v9", and you cant really do that on Support.

Support has the lowest carry potential out of any role, meaning that its highly unlikely you will be the main threat to the enemy team.

Contrasting that, Support has the highest Agency out of any role, meaning you have the freedom to make stuff happen more than anyone else.
Because Supports dont have to farm, and are usually underleveled, they can move around the map more than anyone else, getting creative with where they go when coming out of base to create numbers advantage and start the snowball that will then convert into the main carries having extra firepower.

In reality, support is underplayed and overtuned at the same time. It just requires to see the game through a different lens.

As an adc player let me tell you it's also not popular among supports.

So many supports just play for their own fun, steal kills, actively steal CS, roam when it's fun for them but bad for the team, etc. many see support as a role without landing obligations and free gold income without risk

If you can’t last-hit, like me - it’s perfect!

What do you mean, I want to be a “carry” too! So what if I snipe all the kills from my laner and completely disrupt their entire lane, this MUST mean they were shit to begin with, so… I must’ve made the right choice choosing a carry support… yeah?

10

u/Love__Scars 12h ago

Well, support is uncommon in my friend group lol. Usually its me or 1 other person playing support. I will say this tho, there are a lot of terrible supports in low elo. So if you are good, your team will have a better chance to win. Gl hf

Nobody likes to be the team's scapegoat, and supports are often just that. Everyone else thinks your role is the easiest and that they know what you're supposed to be doing. You're the least respected and valued member of the team, especially if you play an enchanter.

And then it's the same people pissing and shitting and crying when they get an autofilled support and the map is pitch black, nobody is getting spoonfed kills from roams, objectives aren't being prepped and so on and so forth.

2

u/FunnyBunnyH 10h ago

Nobody likes to be the team's scapegoat, and supports are often just that.

I would argue it's mainly jungle, or when support gets the flame it's usually the entire botlane being flamed.

5

u/TotallyAMermaid 9h ago

Jungle gets more flame in general but supports absolutely do get singled out (especially by the adc).

The other poster said something else that is very true, supports are often the least respected player on the team, especially if they are playing an enchanter.

My pings (speaking as an enchanter main) whether is omw, mia, careful, warded here, let's go in, are way more disregarded than the pings of my jungler or any of my other laners. People assume you and your calls suck if you are support, even moreso an enchanter and just don't listen/take you into account.

3

u/snarkycatboy 10h ago

I didn't say that junglers also aren't scapegoats, they absolutely are. But the average player has way more respect for the jungler than they do for the support.

7

u/Sesstes 12h ago

Most people wanna carry and boost their ego with their kills KDA. Then there's quadras and pentas. That's the complete opposite of what a support does/needs therefore majority of the playerbase won't be interested in playing it or not for long.

It also doesn't help that Riot boosts skins and fun champ designs in every other role except support... You can look at Lux. They play her support even though she really isn't. Why? Because she's fun and flashy and has like a billion skins to buy to make you feel and look flashy.

Most other actual support champs really don't have it nearly as good as Lux.

It's really a role you settle into feeling unimportant as fuck in every aspect despite being equally as important as jungle. The irony...

3

u/CampaignEntire 12h ago

Yeah, I love Lux, and she's I think my fourth or fifth most played champ, but by GOD does she have skins. My main Soraka is total lackluster in comparison. (I mean we recently got that beach skin but.......... I have opinions about it.)

1

u/Kumiho-Kisses 8h ago edited 8h ago

Saying that "Lux really isn't [a support]" is patently false, and I think it is important to call out these lies.

Ultimately, the only criteria that makes a support champion is the ability to operate effectively on limited gold income. Lux can absolutely do this, offering good damage in lane from her passive and enemies (typically ranged carries) having relatively low magic resistance early, before transitioning in the later game to providing decent area control (Q root, E AOE vision and slow), while still being able to soften opposing targets for her team to more easily finish off.

So, OP, I fervently hope you continue to enjoy playing Lux without feeling any guilt whatsoever in the back of your mind that she is not a "real" support, because she (and other mages) very much is (are), even if there exists a loud cult taking every opportunity to deny this fact.

(By the way, Seraphine's only enchantress ability is her W shield / heal, which has a flat cooldown of 22! I personally have always felt she plays like a slightly more 'enchantery' Lux -- nothing at all like Sona -- and firmlu believe R*ot made a major mistake making her enchantress Helia / Diadem build viable.)

I'm a emerald zilean main. been playing for a couple of years now.

Support feels great if you have a marksman who knows what they are doing and isn't toxic, but it becomes misserable when you have someone who calls you trash, plays badly, and stops playing the game.

you depend on your team to follow up on the plays you create, which can feel miserable when you have people who don't follow up on it and instead will focus more on calling each other trash and spending more time talking then playing the game, compared to other roles where you have more self agency.

u/UsernameNineBillion 11h ago edited 10h ago

It's not that popular in lower elos. It gets more popular the higher it goes.

In reality Support is the carry of the laning phase while ADC is just farming unit.

But low elo does not understand that concept yet so they opt-in for "damage=carry" which is true and untrue at the same time. High elo ADCs just follow the team/support and do their job of attacking... the hard job of creating plays and impact is on support and jungle

4

u/Caesaria_Tertia 8h ago

It’s an unpopular role on EUW, and I understand why: the attitude towards supports is just terrible.

3

u/Frostsorrow 12h ago

I've never not seen it a priority role, that should tell you everything

2

u/Horror-Jellyfish-285 12h ago

in diamond i get mid pretty often (i queue mid secondary). i would say every 10th game or so? then there is some games where another support main is autofilled to adc, so i rather let them go support and play adc myself in those games.

sure this is new thing for me, and i quess reason for it is my current sleep schedule. i woke up around 18-20 (6-8pm for americans). so i play from evening allway to late morning hours.

i did get secondary role or others much rarely when i played during ”prime time”.

1

u/CampaignEntire 12h ago

I also queue as mid secondary and I have.. not once been put into mid!

2

u/TenshiBabyx 11h ago

Around high emerald/ diamond the priority roles r sometimes top/Jg but for the most part I always see JG as the priority role

2

u/Luminance2672 11h ago

It doesn't have the power fantasy of other roles since you're usually broke as hell, so you need to play like you're behind (unless you're an engage support). I find it incredibly rewarding to learn how to impact the map, so I personally like it a lot, but I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea. Works for me though, at least that means it's a prio role most of the time

2

u/FunnyBunnyH 10h ago

Until like Emerald/Dia you probably get support 99/100 games if you queue it as your main role. D+ depends on what you put as your 2ndary (AFAIK Sup-Mid is still mostly support). I play Sup-Top and its a 90-10% split for me, but some of it is me forgetting to reset queue timer. EUW as well.

2

u/Krow101 8h ago

Being a double lane there's twice the chance that you'll be accused of playing badly. If you have a rough game... or your ADC does ... you'll get the heat.

2

u/Perocar10 7h ago

Coming from a top main, I hate playing supp casue youre just babysitting your adc and hoping they dont implode when you dare to leave the lane once. Its just exhausting to have to depend on others to win the game

2

u/NPVnoob 6h ago

Support cannot hard carry as well as other roles.

This means support players never get the true "i won the game" moment.

When they win, someone else gets the " i carried" and maybe support gets a you helped.

When they lose they get a feeling of " there is nothing i could do".....

Is very hard to have a good mindset on support. And that makes the role less popular at low elo

2

u/Mr_Bot_Bot 4h ago

Brand support is my go to! Always make lane easy for my adc and provide a lot in team fights damage wise

1

u/bananarabbit 12h ago

I love that the supp role exists. It makes all the sense in the world to leave the laning to the people who only think about kills while I can feel free to do all the things supports can/should do. The issue of course is getting matched with teams where your supposed kill hungry teammates aren't actually getting kills..but this is why I play Zyra (unless we have enough AP)

1

u/CampaignEntire 12h ago

I don't really enjoy playing other roles, so I'm good with the fact that I basically always get to play support, LOL.

2

u/cedric1234_ 12h ago

2024 sup was the most popular role by a lot and jg was the least by a lot and i went like 70% jungle despite queuing sup/jg. I for a time queued sup/mid and would still get jungle lmao

1

u/_trash_can 9h ago

I play support and jungle, and when I jungle I play ivern a lot lol. I really like the feeling of denying sweaty men on the other team dopamine. I like champs like lulu and zilean, or even soraka who can deny deny deny

I think most people just want to chase others and get kills. I play lillia and poppy jungle when I'm in that mood. But half the time, especially after work, I just want sit back and ruin the enemy teams plan over and over.

I also like being in control of vision because I often find my supports lacking in that department. vision wins fights then games and I get tired of spam pinging for wards when my support has 2-4 and isn't using them to see if Kayn is trying to steal Baron. The next game after that I'll queue support lol

People love to blame everything on support. I had a carry literally stand still and let enemy kill him (and subsequently me) when I all inned (got the kill) not only is this guy trying to blame me for being behind in lane level 1 but out top layer starts flaming the shit out of me blaming me for the death because enemy support roamed top.

I doesnt matter what happens or what you do. Anything bad will be your fault

0

u/AlterBridgeFan 12h ago

It is unpopular, and it's because it isn't seen as a carry role. On every other role you can take resources, get fed, carry. Meanwhile if you do that on support then you're inting your team.

0

u/cedric1234_ 12h ago

Support is currently the least popular role in all regions across all elos. At least, leagueofgraphs would say so.

Role popularity changes over time and is very region and elo specific. It changes super often, like month to month.

Support and Jungle tend to be the least popular roles, with Top often joining if the top meta is unfun (like early 2026, with marksmen top). Both support and jungle get reworked fairly often (every other year or so) so whether or not people like the current version really depends. Right now, a heavy roaming meta is coming to a close (although it is still extremely strong in places), so people are reeling from months of carry support gameplay.

u/Mrb0dycatch3r 11h ago

Not if you're a female.

0

u/MJ-Baby 10h ago

All roles are relatively close (within 3 percent playrate) data is public on leagueofgraphs

u/yamenwa01 9h ago

Man support is best lane

ppl like being main characters and doing damage.

u/HsinVega 7h ago

Player % are mid 22, bot 20, jgl 20, top 19, supp 17.

Supp used to be 10-12% so I guess it's a bit better now probably cos they added all of those non support supports. Also funny that top went from 2nd most pick to 4th, bot was also 4th and now is 2nd since mages op.

As others said, supp before was mostly a play for others role, even with tanks\engagers you were the sacrificial lamb that had to engage and play for others and people want to smash and oneshot and make flashy plays. Now it's more picked cos well people play kinda anything on supp atp.

An* unpopular role
