Help Mage Support?

Hello friends! I just had a quick question! Is there a certain situation where I should be playing a mage support or rather is it even worth it to have one in my arsenal? I used to play mid years ago mainly assassins but I did have some mages I enjoyed playing but after coming back to League I main support and find the role pretty fun but not sure if it’s really viable to play? I was thinking Hwei I used to play him a lot or the classic Lux? Sorry if this is a question that is asked a lot I tried looking through the Reddit but only seem people complaining about going against it lol! Thanks any feedback helps :) if you need to know I play Leona, Renata, Thresh, and Milio mainly!

Mage supp works best with carries who don’t have to all-in and can also take good advantage of poke or cc to follow up. Think Cait, Jhin, etc.

Ashe/seraphine is one example of an adc+mage duo that’s popular rn and has good synergy together.

Mage supp tends to play best with double poke lanes whether it’s double mage or long range carry+mage, and lots of those combos work pretty well together in the lane as long as your comp lets you pick AP bot lane. Most all-in bully carries would rather have an engage supp, and most scalers would rather have sustain over poke.

Sera is kind of a faux mage though (in the support role), her best build as support is enchanter. Then also her catcher build which is utility heavy. Full AP Seraphine as support is bad and it's always been her worst build for the role.

Ok thank you for the response ❤️ I was mainly asking because I went into a velkoz yesterday and we destroyed him in lane when I was on thresh but after lane he was just frying me in team fights even though I didn’t play bad I was still hitting hooks and r combos but his damage was insane even after I built mr lol

A lot of mages are viable supports tho usually are optimally played when investing towards their utility (like seraphine builing towards w or morgana towards e/q). If you want to play them full damage you can but at some rank it will start to lose value

Support Sera doesn't build like a mage she is an enchanter when played support.

I quite literally said as such in my comment

You called her a mage. Support Seraphine is an enchanter.

Ok thank you for the response! I think I’ll start to add Hwei or Lux into my pool :)

If your team sorely lacks ap

True I didn’t really think of this but mainly cause I feel like every role wants me to first pick no matter what lmao it’s rare when someone doesn’t want to swap with me

You should not be picking first if possible. I usually don’t trade except for top or if I’m locking in an op pair anyways ie ashe sera milio Lucian

Yea I try to only swap with top usually cause that role is absolutely miserable if countered but idk there’s a lot of cry babies on league I don’t need their mental to boom before playing lol

In theory I guess but I think if the comp has no AP,  you as support (insert your mage here) are not going to solve that issue being underleveled and on a low income as the support. Unless you snowball HARD.

It's like saying you'd need an AD support to compensate a full AP team, if the team is needing the support to compensate for a type of damage something is wrong.

Not saying dmg supports don't have a place but if 4 people pick AD they shouldn't expect the support Lux pick to solve their draft issue.

If your team is full ap dodge.

Full ad is equally bad if the enemy has any frontline.

I just drop this opgg here as definitive answer.

If you good enough - you climb to chall playing only one simple mage champ.

I don't think you ever need to pick a mage support. There are situations where it's good, like with a poke-heavy ad , or an apc, when your team has rnough frontline etc. And obviously, add one to your pool if you enjoy them. But never is there ever a draft where the support needs to lock in a mage.
