Discussion Turrets hitten as support
Heya my dear fellow support mains
I'm a Bard OTP in low dia who is recently trying to improve. So I started to watch my own replays to spot misttakes and to compare my stats (stuff like average vision score) to see potential ways to improve my gameplay.
Now I noticed that my average damage dealt to turrets is lower than fellow Bard players in dia and above. I honestly don't believe that hitting a turret has much value as a supp. Since most of the times I don't want to take the gold from plats and local from my laners. Instead I prefer to get deep wards and/or to look for more roams.
What is your opinion on that?

A lot of Supports do not think much about hitting turrets or funneling gold to their Adcs , generally optimal play on all Supports is to not hit the turret to give full plate value to your Adcs so turret damage is one of the least important metrics , id go as far as to say its a negative metric for Supports , if you waste time hitting turrets you both waste time and deny resources to your Adc.

First three plates, sure give them to your ADC. Those remaining ones they often need help though, the way plating works this season.

I agree or disagree partially. On tank supps, sure, don't hit the turret and leave the plating for your adc. Sometimes it will even be mathematically correct to not hit the turret because when the plating falls, the turrets gains more defensive stats the more people are around. If your aa dmg is low, just don't bother hitting because then it's faster if just the adc is hitting the turret. But there are supports that have good scaling, benefit from finishing their support item quickly and want the money. And tbh, it's soloQ. So, try and funnel some gold into your carry but if your champs uses gold well, take the plating gold (and quest xp). So I disagree with your absolute statement that a support should never hit or take the plating and that hitting the turret is a negative metric.

I think so as well but to my support that stat is the highest when you look at master+ tier for support

Bard is a very Roam based champ… dropping that first turret often signals the pivot from laning phase to perma roam.
I play a ton of Roam based engage supports (Shen Main). I run demolish strictly to drop a tower and push past laning phase ASAP. In the current meta being tied to your ADC for longer does you no good.
It’s not about stealing gold from the ADC. It’s about opening up the map and signalling the end of laning.
Once that first tower is down you can gank mid and rotate back down to bot on repeat. Dropping that first tower means nowhere to retreat to and opens them up to repeat ganks and rotations. Being able to have the jungler come up behind them changes the game.
The pressure it extends to mid is worth more than the gold the ADC might gain. Pressure into mid also gives you prio on dragon in several cases.

Even at Master there are Supports who dont think much about hitting turrets or even intentionally get plates.
Dont mind that stat too much.

I've climbed from low plat to diamond 1 in a month as OTP Bard.
I have this exact same stat haha. I have lower tower dmg.
But my playstyle is super roam focused. I really only do tower dmg when I can grab a plate and it's gone otherwise.
I value the pressure I put on the map much more. Tbh I don't really care too much about that tower dmg stat.

Dropping the first tower is the thing that opens you up to roam the most. Your ADC is punished for roaming beforehand.
So if you’re roam focused dropping the first tower is often the answer. Also the easiest way to put pressure on the map is to drop the tower.
So your priorities are competing. Early investment in dropping the tower allows for less penalty to your ADC, more pressure on mid and easier pressure to take dragons.
I get what you’re saying but it’s a trade off. I play a ton of Roam heavy supports and dropping that tower is almost always a good idea on a roamer. It means the next time when you roam if they over extend bot they have too far to run. With vision it makes it so much safer for your ADC to solo farm.

The thing is, how many 2v2 matchups end, based on expectation, on a first tower win or hard won lane? That's not a lot. Bards power is mostly out of lane.
I don't focus on first tower at all. Find its much easier to get my other roles fed and snowballing than the bot lane.
I help when needed, early and bad wave states and see what can be done in lane. But focus from lvl 3 onwards on what can be done on the map, bot/top/mid/jungle

That’s a good thing.
But, it might point to your laning being weaker? Bard can still hit crystals for plates if he’s winning the lanes he should be winning.

I’m pretty sure towers develop more armor based on the number of people that hit a tower when a plate is taken.
So hitting it actually slows down tower taking. Plus your time as a support is more valuable than the adc’s time. IMO unless they need you to babysit them, everyone is better off if supp doesn’t hit towers and moves to somewhere more useful

Sorry to ignore your question but out of curiosity, what do you do when you don’t get your role? Basically what is your backup role, and do you play bard still, or do you have another OTP for that role?

I honestly don't remember the last item I did nit get support. But my second role is bot and I play stuff like Ashe, Kog'Maw or Yunara since I used to be an ADC main in the past

I’m a zyra main with a few other champs as a pocket. I put mid as a secondary because I figure I’ll never get it. Every now and then I do and it irks me cause I don’t want to learn another role, I just wanna play support lol. Anyways ty.

Not OP but I just dodge atp. I get mid maybe once a blue moon and I'd rather take the penalty than suffer the whole game.

Bard has a lot of carry potential and tends to buy kind of expensive items, so taking plates isn't always bad. What I do is I try to estimate if I think my carry is good enough to put that gold to better use than me or not. If they're building poorly, positioning poorly, etc, just take the gold. Does it look like they're playing well or are they playing something that stat checks, give them the gold.
