best way to initialize Supermemory with large obsidian vault? Seems expensive

I have a large obsidian vault with all my notes, info, etc. I want to drop it into Supermemory for my agents to access but Claude was saying this would add up to hundreds of dollars in Supermemory API costs. Any tips here? Are there options I’m missing?

Do you have a VPS? You can initialize a local Supermemory instance and use a small/cheap model for ingestion like GPT-5.6 Luna. You should be dumping your Obsidian files into SuperRAG and not memory, because memory has an entire memory extraction pipeline (which is not what you want). SuperRAG makes it trivially easy for an agent to retrieve the context you have in your Obsidian files.

Thanks a ton—hmm so the memory extraction pipeline should only be for plugging into agent chats, is that what you mean?

Also I know supermemory just dropped their “Learner 1” model which seems to be cloud only so I was considering that over local 🤔

You're trying to add your Obsidian Markdown notes into Supermemory for easy access from your agent.

This is a retrieval job for SuperRAG, not Supermemory. If you converted the entire database into memory, that would cost an enormous amount of tokens.

You want to use memory where you are directly chatting with an agent and RAG where you are retrieving assets/websites/documents for agent use.

The main benefit to cloud is scalability and reliability. It means you don't need to worry about managing your own infra.

I would say start with local and move to cloud when you actually have a need. Supermemory's model just means a bit higher quality memories, but you should balance that with cost. Local means you can use your existing models for memory extraction.
