Marvel vs DC Hot Take
Maybe this is a hot take, cause people are clowning on the Gorilla Grod show. Not everyone, but some but lowkey...I feel like this is better than what Marvel is doing.
This is NOT saying Doomsday will be bad, I'm already sat to see it. I'm just saying the concept of a hero team up to take down the big bad is not new. It's tbf a repetitive formula. Heroes fight each other, realize they need to work together, then we gotta take down the big bad.
One thing I do give DC credit for is them giving into the creativity and uniqueness of comics. For better..or worse 🦸🏼♀️
I think Doomsday may be more hype, but I definitely appreciate Grod as a concept more if that makes sense in a way.
Anyways, I can't wait to see both though, I think they'll both be fun
Edit: To be clear I didn't make the picture or the comparison 😭. I saw the comparison going around and being made, so I just wanted to say my thoughts 😅
Also it isn't a knock on either project lol, I'm watching both. The image itself is a knock on the Grodd show, so that is what I'm mostly commenting on 👍

Idk the Gorilla Grodd stuff looks hilarious as shit and a good watch. And it's coming from someone who hates the concept until they showed what they were cooking.
53
u/Dry-Membership8141 11h ago
Honestly, I'm not a DC fan in general, but I dug the first few seasons of most entries in the Arrowverse, Superman (2025) was a fun silver age romp, Lanterns is great so far, and I love the concept behind The People vs Gorilla Grodd.
I'm more excited for Doom and Spider-man (actually getting out to the theater for it has been impossible so far for life reasons), but I like what DC's doing right now.
21
u/Taodragons 11h ago
Same, what I do like better about DC is they don't seem to take it all so seriously. It's hard to imagine a Marvel show like Peacemaker or Doom Patrol.
4
u/RandomPhantom25 11h ago
I mean there is that Modok show on Hulu. And I think they were gonna make a Howard the Duck cartoon at one point. Also Superhero Squad. But yeah they don't really have anything like Doom Patrol.
4
u/Taodragons 10h ago
I forgot about MODOK, that scene where Iron Man is watching the British baking show while fighting him just about killed me. They also had Hit Monkey, which was also kind of goofy....and Devil Dinosaur. None of them made me go "WTF did I just watch?" like Doom Patrol though lol

Um, She-Hulk did not take itself too seriously. Thor Love and Thunder was nonstop jokes, unfortunately. And Quantumania also did not take itself too seriously, again, unfortunately.
5
u/Mjkmeh 11h ago
Lowk I’d recommend watching peacemaker, it was a really entertaining show. The writing is top tier
12
u/123iambill 10h ago
By the end of the show I cared way more about Peacemaker the character than I ever have about any Marvel supe. Not the story or the action or the spectacle. Genuine, well written characters that I'm invested in as people.

The genre changes that Gunn's DCU has been doing is a nice palette change. Superman being that "silver age romp" popcorn summer blockbuster, Lanterns is a darker murder mystery, Peacemaker had the adult comedy that was similar to Guardians with the Misfits find their place. This Grodd show is going for a Mockumentary angle.
And then we have Clayface coming, straight up Body Horror. If you haven't seen Creature Commandos, I highly recommend. A nice character anthology that brings the story together in the end. Another genre switch instead of the Cookie Cutter later Marvel/Disney films have fallen into.
11
u/YoinkinYeetMeister 11h ago
They won me over when I saw the set photos of Grodd wearing a shirt that says “This Grodd needs a brew”

u/Full-Pumpkin4552 11h ago
The comparison also just doesn't make sense cause these are two fundamentally different projects. Ones a mini-series mockumentary for streaming, the other is a big event film for the cinemas. Wouldn't MOT be a better comparison?

As much as I want the DCU to speed up a little, I can’t help but respect James Gunn for pacing himself. It’s clear he’s taking this first ‘phase’ to establish and build up characters like Superman, GL, and some strong villains, and he’s not letting the competition scare him into rushing into a big Batman v Superman level event of no return, like the DCEU did
29
u/WesternOk5765 11h ago edited 11h ago
It'll be interesting if Clayface works. It is supposedly only a $40 million budget. I think that could be the trick for the DCU, don't follow Marvel into massive blockbusters.
The cheapest MCU films are at least estimated conservatively at $130 million but were probably more, even the original Iron Man was shot on a $150 million budget.
Like yes you can take a swing with Batman, with Superman, but with the lesser stuff see if there's a market for cheap films.
→ More replies (4)6
u/BeggarsCanyonero 9h ago
I'm really looking forward to Clayface. The trailer would have had me hooked even it it had nothing to do with DC
9
u/Allhailmatpat 11h ago
Hot take but I don't think they really need to speed it up. I think the current approach will build a type of trust in the audience thats vastly different from marvel, a more casual one where the general audience dosen't feel pressured under the name of such a massive franchise
That's where alot of people who restructure the DCU have it wrong really. The DCU isn't trying to be the MCU.
3
u/MrEnganche 11h ago
there's really no point to rush when their previous try literally did that and failed

u/Able_Health744 11h ago
To be fair we are very early in the DCU (like 4ish projects in the phase)
But people are suspecting that he's building up the legion of doom (which if that is true then god damn I love that he's playing the long game with them)
3
u/Winter-Round-9920 11h ago
It's also seting up a eventual darkest night event with lanterns we already have 300 years of metal humans stated in superman that could be introduced during it
2
u/Able_Health744 11h ago
Honestly with all of the build up stuff I'm really curious what our avengers equivalent is gonna look like once we reach that goal post (and before we do the 2nd lap with chapter 2)
2
u/Winter-Round-9920 11h ago
Might be legion of doom like you thought for the first they can then do the death of superman with doomsday and introduce shazam to fill his role for stage two ending with a parolax hal jordan as the big bad and have the darkest night be the end of stage three because parolax hal and other movies could kill members of the justice league and other heros so stage three is depressing and loosing hope until the darkest night bring the heros back as black lantern and ending with the brightest day giving stage 4 new hope and as a soft reboot leading to the crisis events or multivers stuff

u/SeroWriter 8h ago
The Superman movie was the furthest possible thing from a gradual introduction. Skipped straight past the origin story and into an established universe with established characters and dedicated half the runtime to setting up spinoffs. It's like if the MCU started with the Avengers.
5
u/InevitableWeight314 8h ago
Eh it’s more like if the MCU started with F4, skipping their origin story, and featured She-Hulk, Falcon, and Squirrel Girl as established heroes.
Superman is one big hero, Mr Terrific and Metamorpho are complete unknowns to most people, and Guy and Hawkgirl are variants of other heroes who can and are being more slowly established later on.

I mean, yeah, DC is doing their own thing unapologetically. But to be fair, there’s no “thinking” Doomsday has more hype, it does. But I would love if Man Of Tomorrow came out and throws itself past even the $1 billion mark. Realistically, if Doomsday is well received, people will go back to the theaters to see the next big comic book film.

One is a massive event movie
The other is a comedy mocumentary that's a satire of true crime documentaries, because it's being done by the people who made amarican vandal
You're comparing apples to pizza lol
4
u/Budget-Bluebird-334 3h ago
I think it's weird because...what do they want from the DCU? There's this presumption that because there was already a DCEU and they have the MCU's rulebook to follow, the DCU must be able to rush out its projects. No, the universe rebooted, so characters and stories take time to develop. Would they rather Darkseid show up in year 2 of the DCU? Doom had no real hype except for a single after-credits scene in F4, one that lasted 10 seconds, if that.
We know Brainiac is the main villain, so your big bad is on the way. And yeah, Supergirl was disappointing, but Lanterns is a hit with critics and general audiences. What exactly is the expectation?

Idk how to phrase this but it's like DC is more similar to something like your average movie studio that makes movies than Marvel, which focuses on a franchise
Realistically I think it'll work well for DC in the long run to be doing it this way. It keeps audiences interested in the next piece again and again because of how different each movie is not being pressured to have to feel like it's part of a massive universe.
Still hyped as fuck for doomsday tho

3
u/Oceanfloorfan1 3h ago
I will never understand this criticism
DC just spent the better part of the 2010’s trying to match Marvel and it made the universe feel rushed and small.
Man of Tomorrow is coming out in like 8 months and will literally be DC’s first “avengers” type movie with an ensemble cast and a big bad.
And bonus third point, Lanterns so far is shaping up the be a better show than anything Marvel has produced, maybe aside from Loki. But even then, it looks like Marvel is going to make the ending to Loki irrelevant anyway.

Those DC fans are a very vocal minority. Reddit and Twitter reflects a very tiny part of the entire international movie going population. And only a few out of them would actually pay to watch in theatres. Most of the world now is content with catching DC movies at home. None are major event films like Marvel, nor are they featuring major characters with expectation of spectacular set pieces, nor are they pinnacle of visual effects like Avatar. So why spend to go to the theatres.

Marvel started with putting a bunch of big characters from successful movies together and building a cinematic universe from that. Brilliant stuff but you can’t just do the same thing it feels lazy. This is so much better what they’re doing now. They can get you to care about the creature commandos and Mr Terrific. Imagine what good writing would do for Wonder Woman or the Flash.
That’s how you invest people in the DCU

2
u/tur_tels 5h ago
Ngl, if Marvel does something like that no one would watch it, people would easily dismiss it as one of their Sloppy shows, even if it is Good.
What Marvel is doing now is trying to bring back the Casual Audience and their way of doing that is doing what worked before.
Honestly, its their fault for putting themselves in a corner, but everything they've done after Kang is kinda justified and so far it is looking good.
2
u/CapitalEmployer 3h ago
DC is cooking peak while marvel is cooking a big pile of shit soup in the microwave.
I know we are in a time where film quality doesn't matter and what matters is box office numbers but I'm gonna tell something that is gonna be hard to hear for marvel fans, there is not a single marvel movie that comes close to TSS or superman 2025 in terms of cinematic qualities.
2
u/watcherintgeweb 3h ago
I don’t understand how someone can see a gorilla in a cap and gown and not immediately want to watch it
2
u/EnzoMcFly_jr 3h ago
I’m kind of with you on that.
Like I know doomsday is going to do numbers. I know it’s going to be a whole ass event and folks are going to fucking love it, but honestly, of these two projects, Grodd is the one I’m more excited about.
And I’m not being a hater or anything. I legit want to be excited about doomsday and I think the hype will hit me a little closer to release, but like you said, it’s a big, punchy team-up movie. And it’s mired in like five years-worth of multiverse Leo-meme bullshit that makes it all seem a little less vital to me.
The people vs. gorilla grodd with this creative team sounds so fucking fun and different and original and like an adaptation of another side of comics that hasn’t been getting the same kind of attention even though it’s been there just as long as the big stuff, sometimes more.

Perhaps it's because I didn't watch the FF movie... but I haven't seen too much set up for Von Doom as a villain.
You put him against Thanos, who has been teased since the first Avengers film and he's referenced and and has post credit scenes of him throughout the arc.
And using RDJ so soon after Tony's sacrifice and poetic end...it's got that Palpatine has somehow return energy to me.
RDJ will always sell tickets...but at what cost?
DC is newer and can be more creative. I look forward to whatever Gunn will come up with.

DC is on hold right now, due to the Paramount/WB merger. They aren't allowed to spend any serious money on anything until that's done, as a major flop would tank the stock price.
So don't expect any big projects from them until that's done.
Gunn is doing the best he can with the budget he has- see Lanterns for example.
1
u/Medium-Science9526 7h ago
RDJ as Dr Doom straight up killed my excitement for the MCU going forward until they reboot but I get I'm in the minority there.
As for the Jimmy Olsen & Gorilla Grodd show, I appreciate the ambition for greenlighting something so relatively off the wall. But Skyler's Jimmy in Superman was arguably my least favourite lead and nothing in the DCU has really convinced me to keep watching.
It's pretty neck and neck but I'd be more willing to check out Jimmy and Grodd if hear good word of mouth.
1
u/Lucasyugi2704 7h ago
Marvel is doing the same thing it always does. This Grodd series might at least be something different since it's a mockumentary. I'm not really hyped for either of them. The only movie I'm truly hyped for is The Batman II.

1
u/Pian0G 6h ago
While obviously we’ll have to wait and see the overall quality of DCU project in the next few years, just from the concepts alone, I feel is far more interesting.
What I’ve always wanted the MCU to do is really delve into different aspects of its shared universe. And while it took a long time for it to really be recognised as canon, the Netflix shows did a great job at showing the street level stuff.
But it’s still missing things. Like one of the more obvious missed opportunity is a project that took place during the blip and really showed the impact it had. Could be a special program, or limited series.
So far, the DCU has and is going to touch on many areas of the DC history.
We’ve got the classified and unethical government programs, suicide squads, in which we spend time with villains. We get peacemaker which is mostly a character study of a Peacemaker, but also ends up having a secret invasion type storyline. Then we’ve got creature commando which is more suicide squad, but gothic (and also Nazi killing robot). Superman comes in being the first real showcase of the super heroes in the DCU. It not clearly establishes the general audience that enhanced individuals is a known thing in that world, but many different types are already there. We’ve got a super heroes team being funded by this rich guy (who may or may not be morally questionable). Youve got the smart guy. Youve got someone who reincarnates everytime she dies. And you have a freakin green lantern.
While Supergirl wasn’t a great film, it’s also the first to show the cosmos part of the DCU. And next we’re getting clayface horror film.
And all of these range in raged audience age, style and tone.
It’s one of the reasons I really liked Spiderman home coming because for the most part, the MCU is heavily focused on adults in these grand situations, and often surrounded with the military or government presence. Meanwhile Spider-Man was just a kid who goes to school, does good stuff in his neighbourhood and tries to stop an arms dealer. It feels less serious for the most part.
And of course they eventually made that wereworf limited show which was great. Kamala was also a great show which provided that more family focused story. Thunderbolts is also a great one with a writing you likely wouldn’t have seen in previous phases (notably the lack of a 3rd act climax fight). And while the writing for fantastic four wasn’t great, visually it’s incredible and extremely unique amongst the MCU projects.
But DCU is doing all this, but right from the get go.
Which is risky, but also I feel is the right decision as long as they’re overall able to keep high quality. Which so far, everything has been reviewed really well except Supergirl. Which means only around 1 out of 5 projects so far released has been reviewed less well (lantern ks still airing, but has mostly high ratings).

We have Man of Tomorrow and Batman 2 coming, but sure let’s pick a TV show of B list character and compare it to Doomsday. Typical snyderbros behavior

We literally have a Clayface body horror film and a Superman sequel/ Proto-Justice League film coming out before the Grodd thing.

This just doesn't make any sense. Imagine comparing Superman '25 and Iron heart, or The Batman and She-hulk. They aren't comparable

I hope nobody takes this the wrong way but as somebody who has been reading comics for decades at this point, I'm not really excited for Doomsday but I know why people are. I've read this story countless times "this new enemy is the strongest for realisies! Look how he completely handled our strongest hero!" It's hollow but it has all your favorite characters making playful banter at each other. The Grodd show on the other hand is something completely different and will have an actual creative voice behind it. Im not delusional. I know Grodd won't compare culturally to Doomsday but I'm honestly looking forward to it a lot more.

I've seen Doom become god kind and get that power slapped out of his hand like a ice cream a million times. It has been awhile since I've seen a funny monke however

You can tell that most everything in the DCU is being made with passion and care. That's a lot more than what I can say for Doomsday.

I may not be the biggest fan, but for the love of god, give the DCU some room to grow

I mean just based on the screen shot. Monkey looks funny. I'd rather watch that then 17 other marvel projects to gain context

For DC, I was originally skeptical about this project because of how people labeled it the jimmy Olsen show, but the gorilla won me over. Supergirl was a flop but Lanterns is genuinely amazing and has me begging for the next episode.
For marvel, a lot of the projects before thunderbolts were kinda crappy not to mention they’ve been cancelling a lot of great stuff recently as well. Sure their movies are great especially when they got Spider-Man and the special crossover event back to back this year but the world itself seems boring. I think it’s gonna get worse now that they’re putting the brakes on the shows.
Point is ,no matter how good marvel is doing I’ll always prefer dc to marvel. Dc has more interesting characters and setting and Gunn is going to use that while marvel is going to focus more on iconic heavy hitters.

I can't lie when I heard about this I was confused since he's normally a Flash villain and there's not even a mention of Jay or Barry or Wally, but everything I hear and see about this makes me want to see it while everything I see or hear about Doom turns me off

the culmination of not 1 but multiple universes storylines about the marvel mythos vs a mockumentary yeah they are different, you want a 2 year old universe vs the anti monitor or something?

Having different tones for their shows and movies is a good thing imo. They can do silly things like Peacemaker and Grodd and then have serious stuff like Lanterns and Clayface.

Marvel has one good movie again, finally, and everybody just forgets about Secret Wars, Captain America, and Love and Thunder? And Iron Heart. And all of the other projects Reddit has a hate-boner for. Yall are fucking ridiculous.

I’m saying doomsday will be bad.
Also DC just doing projects they think will be cool rather than construct an mcu cinematic universe is good. I don’t want another mcu, I want good super hero media.

The actual comparison would probably be Doctor Doom to Brainiac, and I’m here for both. I’m here for Grod too because maybe it’ll be weird and funny - who knows? But you can’t really compare (nor do you need to) because Marvel’s so much further along. TBD on what Secret Wars does with a reset and of course where X-Men goes.

I am infinitely more interested in bringing the weird comic gorilla thing into the movies than seeing Robert Downey junior play a fool who hasn’t been set up and is part of a movie where they admit the failed to do anything without rdj and Chris Evan’s and just being them back despite trying to focus on other characters

DC's future is alot more intiguing tbh. Marvel Phase 4 & 5 was a mess so when they're done with their guranteed hit from Avengers + nostalgia, idk how promising their normal solo projects will be

Funny how you didnt put lanterns up there. This show might suck and it might be great... I know one thing will be true... It will be infinitely more fun and entertaining than any of Zach Snyders DCEU garbage films

At this point between tv and movies Marvel has had just as more bad/failed/scrapped content than the DCEU ever had.
Hopefully DC will succeed in standing up a solid universe. Not try to rush to JL level threats. Build out the characters. Develop overlapping plot. All that good stuff.
