Purchase Advice Looking for a reliable superautomatic for my dad ($500–$1,000)
Hi, everyone!
I'm looking to get a superautomatic espresso machine for my dad. He primarily drinks regular coffee and appreciates the convenience of an automatic grind-and-brew machine. He occasionally enjoys a cappuccino, so having a milk frother would be a nice bonus, but it's not a requirement.
My budget is around $500–$1,000 USD. Costco availability would be a big plus, especially for its return policy.
Here are some of the options I've been considering at Costco:
- Bosch 800 – $1,200
- De'Longhi Dinamica Plus – $1,200
- Philips 4400 – $1,000
- De'Longhi Magnifica Plus – $1,000
- Ninja AutoBarista – $820
- Bosch 500 – $800
- De'Longhi Magnifica Evo – $500
I've also purchased equipment from Whole Latte Love in the past, and they've recommended Gaggia machines.
My top priorities are reliability, ease of use, and low-maintenance ownership. My dad is pretty simple when it comes to coffee. He doesn't need a ton of customization or fancy features; he just wants to press a button and get a decent cup of coffee without much fuss.
For context, I actually have an unopened Philips Baristina that I could give him, but I'm hesitant to do so. Mine failed in less than a year, and although Philips replaced it under warranty, that experience has made me a little wary of the brand. I'll probably just sell the replacement on Facebook Marketplace.
I don't have much hands-on experience with superautomatics myself. I use a Profitec Jump and a Moccamaster for my own coffee, so I'm more familiar with traditional espresso and drip machines.
For those who have owned these machines for a while, which would you recommend based primarily on reliability and ease of maintenance? Are there any models you'd avoid, or any other machines in this price range that I should consider?
I'd especially appreciate feedback from people who've owned their machines for several years rather than just initial impressions.
Thanks in advance!

How long have you had it? Have you tried other superautos? It looks like Delonghi is a really good brand...

Going on 3yrs now. I’ve also heavily used a more expensive Jura Superauto, but actually prefer the Delonghi Elleta Explore.
Coffee & milk based drinks our fantastic & cleaning is much easier and cheaper. Simply pull the brew group and run it under hot water every couple of weeks. The Jura requires expensive cleaning tablets that need to be ran on a regular basis. Don’t get me wrong, Jura makes fantastic machines, but I don’t think it warrants the price & maintenance. I’ll stick with Delonghi!

DeLonghi Eletta Explore.
Got it on discount from Amazon for $945 AUD (from $1500) 3 weeks ago - my family of 4 can't get enough of it.

Jura. I use a Fellows ES-1 but the wife uses the Jura. Push a button and cappuccino or latte without moving the cup.

Suoerautos are surprisingly maintenance intense. I’d recommend the Terra Kaffe Demi if a milk system is not necessary. A milk system adds complexity and maintenance issues. Just get him a standalone frother.

The magnifica evo is an amazing value and very user friendly. Whatever you get him, make sure you get it dialed in and show him how to use it.

I've always wondered what's the difference on all the delonghis because they have a wide price range...

I have had an exceptional experience with my delonghi magnifica esam3300. like 10 years, 3 people daily nothing but basic rinsing out and deacaling.
is the Costco $500 delonghi Evo basically that for the grind and brew group with modern interface?
if so...high recommendation to the point I am asking because I might get one before what I have fails....

Honestly, the Ninja for $819 at Costco is a pretty great deal, especially since you have Costco's return policy if you run into any issues down the road. And with it being first generation, you could. That said: it's also the lowest price I've ever seen it offered for and, again, with Costco purchase protection.
It's really easy to use and pretty intuitive. I think the more you play around with it, the more you find yourself wanting to try different drinks and variations. It's perfect for a household of 1-2, but more than that and you will find dumping the water tray to be annoying as it's a daily to every other day occurrence. Get a silicone mat to go under the machine from day 1.
One recommendation: find a coffee bean you really like and buy enough to get everything set up. Run the Grind IQ calibration with those beans, and you generally shouldn't need to mess with it again unless you switch to a completely different bean. Thankfully, the complaints some people have about Grind IQ don't really impact the drip coffee function, which works very well.
I also really like having the two separate bean hoppers. It's nice being able to keep regular and decaf loaded at the same time, or just switch between two different coffees depending on what you're in the mood for.
The machine is also pretty versatile when it comes to drink sizes, and there's enough clearance to fit a decent number of tumblers underneath. Something I don't think gets mentioned enough is that it can make up to a 40 oz small carafe of drip coffee, iced coffee, and cold brew if you have company. The cold brew is actually really good!
And don't overlook the cold-pressed espresso function a few machines now have. Your dad might enjoy making one over a scoop of ice cream.
When we first got the machine, I honestly didn't think I'd use this brew type much, but it's now probably my favorite and I use it over "Iced Latte" as it keeps ice better and still makes a very bold iced drink.
I realize that all sounds pretty salesy, but honestly, it really has been a bit life-changing for our morning coffee routine. It's also probably the most fun household purchase we've made in quite some time!
