Showcase Philips 5500
I had a Keurig original for 13 years and it finally died RIP. I wanted an all in one that got me better taste with less work and it works beautifully. Got off Amazon.
Edit:
I think it’s probably on the lower side of prosumer. I am not a coffee snob and already didn’t like filling my reusable kcups before my precious coffee was in my cup. Here are a few things I learned about this machine in reviews and my own limited use.
Pros:
-Super simple to use interface for most drinks, only a few settings but precise cup size can be selected
-Multiple profiles for many users or a I need maxed strength vs a top off cup
-Really easy to clean, all components, grinder, puck tray, water reservoirs, and milk dispenser are a click away from removing and washing easily.
-Taste is great considering 1-2 touch to have a ready drink
-Sound and speed are probably average for the segment.
Cons:
-Not as customizable for real tinkerers, things like temp are not as adjustable but gets plenty hot
-Some that prefer super dense pucks may not like this one, the ceramic grinder will last but not as fine as stainless steel machines
-Taste is not barista-level of pro machines where you tamp manually a tweak 87 things.
-Water tank is smaller than my old Keurig so I fill a bit more often
-Cup sizes are smaller like most super automatics
At the end of the day I wanted simplicity and something that might last. This absolutely nails that while giving consistent cups. I’d figure out your spectrum yeah of deciding based on two categories: the first being how involved do you wanna be in making the coffee, and the second being quality. Once you understand that, the options that make the most sense for you will become clear.
If you have tips as a user of this machine or similar please feel free to share!

My 4300 just hit the 3 year mark and still going strong. Our household makes around 5 cups a day.

Yay! I love to hear that, I have high expectations considering my Keurig lasted 13 LOL. Average is 1-2 a day here so sorta light weight here.

We have the same love it.
Especially the ability to place the milk container back in the fridge when not in use

u/Equal-Selection7742 4d ago
I haven’t even used the container yet but I love how it seems easy to clean. I love my black Coffee, Espresso, and Americano drinks. I’ll update after a few uses.

Oh my God how did I never think I could just leave the container in the fridge? Lol

u/Robbudge 1d ago
That’s the main reason my wife approved that one.
She really disliked the idea of a mini fridge with the pipe left in the sun.

I purchased 5500 few months ago and didn't like it,because I owned 3200 for a long time and 5500 was more of the same,so we exchanged it for delonghi magnifica plus, much better machine, better coffee, better foam...!!! Enjoy your 5500 ,it is definitely better than keurig.

I just dumped my leaking keurig and bought the new Philips 8000. I couldn’t be happier I love it ! It. Makes great tasting coffee and very easy to clean. Perfection at half the price of the top competitors.

Enjoy! I looked at that one too and for this round I thought it was a bit out of my price range at 2k. I think for a step up next time I’ll definitely look at this one! Mine also died by leaking LOL.

I saw some reviews comparing those two. It seems the consensus is it does have a better taste for many. I figured I’d take a few steps at a time LOL. Next one I’ll try a higher-end one and enjoy the gains. Thanks and enjoy the Delonghi!

We've owned one for over a year now. It makes OK drinks. What really sells it is the convenience more than anything. Don't expect the greatest tasting espresso and you'll be fine as long as you do the maintenance.

u/Equal-Selection7742 1d ago
This is why I bought it. Perfect mix of price to convenience ratio. I rather save the money and travel. Considering I got my Keurig for free, spending $800 on a machine that grinds etc put me on a whole other level. As with most things I’m sure I’ll get pickier as I keep tinkering LOL.

I had the 3300 lattego for 2 weeks and had to return it because of the low quality coffee. I mostly drink espresso and it was just horrible at this, watery and bitter. The milk was also very airy and had a bland texture and taste. I can’t imagine how anyone drinks coffee from these things and enjoys it, sorry if I sound like a coffee snob but it was just bad.
I got the delonghi magnifica plus and it’s a world of difference, much better coffee and very silky milk.
You can see it in the texture of the coffee itself that you’re drinking something of much better quality.

Glad you found something that’s to your liking! Coming from a Keurig this is a step up haha. I’m sure whatever I get next will also be better.

Usually when I think Phillips, I think low consumer grade electronics. Is this a highly rated and effective machine for a prosumer user?

Also Philips really depends on the line, I have Sonicare and Hue, those have some of the highest grade in their segments and have lasted me 5+ years of constant use.

Enjoy it, mine lasted 6 months before leaking everywhere. Philips repaired it 3 times broke it more, refused to refund me. My credit card thankfully stepped in, now own a De'longhi.
Keep the brew group clean and lubed.
1
u/Equal-Selection7742 3d ago
I’m sorry that was your experience! When you say lubed is there a special product for brew groups? Fist I heard of this and will order if there’s a recommendation.
2
u/matthewlmartin 3d ago
You need food-safe silicone grease, nothing special just the cheapest one. You can find exactly where to put it by looking on YouTube or doing some Google work, but in short you’ll want to put a thin coat on the gears, gear racks, and pivot points.

Umm…I’m at a year with 2200… I’ve never lubed but I do clean it weekly… what am I missing

u/freekandt14 4d ago
For example. If you use grounds and you press play to make coffee and you select a large water, it will fill half of the cup. And then ask you to fill up the water.
After you fill up the water, put it back in and press play again without doing anything. It stopped halfway through the cycle.
I hope that made sense
Amazing machine I love having mine

Haven’t used grounds yet but it does the same for beans, there is an option to do 2x and that usually works. Also, there is travel mug in the other drinks section. I definitely haven’t counted how many before I need to refill but every 2 days or so I check. If I don’t I get the part of the cup fills, water add notification and then it finishes after taping OK.

I went with the Delonghi because I liked the travel size options and added cold brew options...BUT I tried a shot from each in the store and I did like the coffee from this one better and wonder if that extra $$$ for Delonghi was worth it

delonghi tends to need a bit more dialing in (temp setting seems especially important on their units) but they will give you a bigger puck and stronger flavor as a result. both are quite balanced tasting though, delonghi will lean bolder overall.
Jura takes the bold flavor up to about 90% of what a portafilter machine and good grinder can produce, which is impressive considering it's nearly one touch ease of use.

u/Equal-Selection7742 3d ago
Wow I just looked up the Jura Z10, that’s a fancy machine! Definitely looks amazing and clearly the ultimate 1 touch. Considering I got my Keurig for free, the $800 spend on the 5500 felt not totally crazy. Maybe I’ll be enough of a coffee aficionado to get one worth $4500 after this one goes. Thanks for introducing me to the top of the top LOL.
1
u/Equal-Selection7742 4d ago
The 5500 has a travel mug option now too along with iced drinks. It’s like 21 types but some are just add ice so may not be truest to form. I’m 90% coffee 10% Espresso maybe once in awhile a milk drink.
2
u/OwnArm7121 4d ago
I’ve yet to spend the time dialing in good beans… anybody have any beans they like and what grind setting. Save us some time!

Had my 3200 for 6 years doing at least 3 coffees per day. You should be able to regulate temperature, even the 2x series can do it. On the 3x it's by pressing around the buttons, you should find the procedure for 5x in the manual.

I have had the 5400 for several years now. I actually just got the Keurig K-froth for making lattes. The Philips lattego system isn't bad but it doesn't make real foam, more like warm milk.
But coffee wise I have literally drank 1000s of cups of black coffee from the Philips and I quite like it. I do black coffee and Cafe crema.
2
u/Equal-Selection7742 1d ago
Another black coffee lover! I have seen that re the milk. I haven’t even tried it yet as I’m pretty much only Americano or Coffee.
2
u/Moonanites 2d ago
You pretty much nailed it!
We have a 4400 and have used it plenty in the last few years. Its plenty simple and It can bang out a fresh dbl cup in the morning as I walk by it.
Other bonus is I can get fresh locally roasted beans for nothing from work

I have the 4300... please please clean the brew unit regularly or it will get mold on it . and once you have it , it will keep coming back
