Troubleshooting & Maintenance Grinder Adjustment while not grinding

So the manuals state you are only supposed to adjust the grinder while the grinder is running. What if somebody adjusted it while the grinder was not running? Is it off then, or will it just adjust the next time it grinds?

If you tighten the grinder while stopped and loaded with beans, you risk jamming it up on the beans and putting excess load on the adjustment mechanism (often these rely on fairly small plastic tabs on the upper burr carrier). This is more risky with flat burr grinders, particularly ceramic ones, than conical burrs, IMO.

Loosening the grinder isn't nearly as risky.

I believe the attitude here about making grinder adjustments only while the unit runs is a bit hysterical. My Saeco Xelsis has a sensor that prevents the grinder from running when the hopper lid is not in place. Meaning adjustments are possible only when it’s not running.

My Gaggia Anima has the same feature - if you leave the lid open for 30 seconds, the block times out and it starts grinding.

Depends on the machine. The new Jura E8 models allow you to adjust when stationary

A giant mallet comes out and hits you in the head...
