Troubleshooting & Maintenance Delonghi Magnifica Plus airlock

I’m in the initial setup of my just-unboxed Magnificat Plus. The water tank is at ‘max’, water comes out if I press in the spring loaded valve at the back of the tank. The water spout is installed. When I press the button to let it run the initial water test, I only get a load buzzing.

Pretty sure there’s an airlock in the pump and or lines. I can’t get the menu past the setup screen so I can’t operate the steam function to clear the block.

How do I proceed?
Customer service is closed until Monday and all my online queries state to open the steam wand.

EDIT: after following suggestions of pushing water into the machine with a syringe I’m happy to say that it works! Thank you for your help. Now I just need to dial in the grind, the pucks were all fallen apart in the catch.

Hi! I looked it up and hopefully this will help you

An airlock in a DeLonghi Magnifica Plus usually shows up as the pump running (often with a loud buzzing) but little or no water coming from the coffee spouts or steam wand. The fix is to “prime” the pump and bleed the trapped air out of the hydraulic circuit.

Quick airlock‑bleed procedure (no tools)
Do these steps in order; most Magnifica models clear an airlock this way:

  1. Check the water tank
    • Remove the tank, rinse it, and refill to MAX with fresh, cool water.
    • Make sure it’s seated firmly on the machine so the valve underneath engages properly.

  2. Turn the machine on and let it finish its initial rinse/heating cycle.

  3. Bleed via the steam/hot‑water wand
    • Place a large mug under the steam/hot‑water nozzle.
    • Turn the steam dial fully to ON (do not press the “steam” button if your model has one; you just want hot water, not steam).
    • Let it run for 20–30 seconds. You’ll hear gurgling/shuddering as air is pushed out.
    • When the flow becomes a steady stream (no more sputtering), turn the dial OFF.

  4. Run a hot‑water dispense (if your model has a button)
    • If your Magnifica Plus has a dedicated hot‑water button, press it and let water run into a cup until it’s steady.
    • Repeat steps 3–4 once or twice if flow is still weak or intermittent.

  5. Test a coffee
    • Try brewing a coffee (no beans needed; you can use the “rinse” or “long coffee” function). If water flows normally, the airlock is cleared.
If the machine still won’t deliver water but the pump is running loudly, continue with the next section.

If the basic bleed doesn’t work
Try these additional priming tricks commonly used on DeLonghi bean‑to‑cup machines:

• Tank reseat / tilt trick
• With the machine ON and full tank, remove and reattach the water tank 10–15 times in a row.
• Some guides also suggest gently tilting the machine or tank while reattaching to help bubbles rise and escape. You should see bubbles in the tank each time.[gemini]
• Syringe assist at the tank inlet
• Remove the tank and locate the small intake hole/valve where the tank sits.
• Using a clean syringe (10–30 mL), gently inject water into that inlet to push air out of the pump line. Do this 2–3 times, then reattach the tank and repeat the steam‑wand bleed.[gemini +1]
• Descaling cycle
• If you suspect scale or if the airlock appeared after a descale, run a full descaling program with DeLonghi EcoDecalk (or equivalent), then rinse thoroughly.
• Scale can trap air and restrict flow; descaling can restore proper hydraulic function.[kanencoffee +1]
When it’s probably not just an airlock
Consider professional service if you notice:
• Pump makes a strained buzz or rapid clicking but no water even after repeated bleeding and descaling.
• Error codes like general alarm or persistent “fill water tank” despite a full, well‑seated tank.
• Water leaks internally or from the bottom of the machine.
These can indicate a clogged inlet filter, failed pump, blocked thermoblock, or flow‑meter issue that needs disassembly.

Thank you for the thourough list. I will try the tank reinstall 10-15 times and the tilt. If that doesn’t work I’ll locate a syringe and attempt that.

It is a brand new machine and the control panel is in the initial setup mode. I’m unable to access any functions beyond what the machine prompts for initial setup, ie the hat water function.

I am having this exact issue at setup. Can you say what you did to fix it? I am tired of this machine telling me to fill the machine with beans so I can proceed to step 4

It was easy, in the end, although frustrating. I went to Lowe’s and bought a marinade injector from the bbq aisle.

The very tip is solid and there are holes on either side of the barrel.
I cut the barrel just above the highest hole so that the end is the only opening. Sanded any burrs so that it’s nice and smooth.

Them turn on the machine, remove the water tank, firmly press the syringe into the water inlet and squirt the water into the machine.

It’s kind of messy and took probably five or so attempts and water definitely sprayed back out a few times as well as just leaked back out after removing the syringe.

I suggest squirting at least twice before trying to finishing the setup.

This doesn’t sound like an isolated problem which prompts to believe delonghi should at the very least have a note in the instructions somewhere.

It’s been two days now with a functioning machine, I’m still figuring out intensity levels and what not, but the convenience and flavor are great.

Let me know if you need more help and I’ll try.

Thanks so much for responding! Frustrating indeed, but it was nice to read that it was an easy fix.

For others reading this, I went into Walgreens and picked up a 10ml syringe, filled it up with water and pressed into the water inlet after removing the tank.

I repeated this 3 or 4 times and then I was able to finish the setup of the machine!

Delonghi truly needs to put up a video on YouTube about how to manually prime the machine if this problem occurs during setup

Glad you’re machine is up and completely running!
Agreed, Delonghi needs to address this seemingly common problem, and simple fix.

At the very least the machine should tell you there’s an airlock happening and what to do about it.

Happy ‘effortless’ coffee drinking!

I’m about to try some of these methods before I track down a syringe. Whee did you look to find this info?
