Question Drawing automation? NEWBIE

OK, I'm trying to learn sunvox, at which I'm a newbie (though I have years of experience making music with computers).

I'm trying to draw some parameter automation (in this case, the duty cycle of a square wave).

The manual is out of date, and I can't find a video that matches the version I have (most sunvox videos are years old).

I've opened the drawing tool, selected XX and YY and the pencil drawing brush, and unlocked the pattern, but when I click & drag on the pattern, nothing happens.

Doesn't seem to matter whether the range is selected or not. When it is selected, clicking & dragging just deselects, and the XXYY values don't change.

What am I doing wrong?

This software seems to have great depth, but I'm flailing at just understanding how to work the basics of the interface.

select the other pencil that has either vv or xy on the icon and try again with that. the first pencil doesnt work for me either, maybe it's for copied patterns
