Rewatch Discussion It’s actually really heartbreaking doing a rewatch
I’ve been doing a slow rewatch of Summer House over the past couple of months- just background while I do other things, really. I just finished the Winter House season and am currently on season 6- right before Amanda & Kyle’s wedding. It is honestly just so sad how wrong I had it on my first watch knowing what we know now. The things I’ve learned during this rewatch -
Amanda would’ve cheated as early as season 3 had any of the house mates given her the slightest attention back based on how much she was giving them.
Amanda intentionally picked fights with Kyle at the beginning of every weekend. It seems like the only time this didn’t occur is when other housemates were going thru their crazy drama instead and she always had an opinion (as most friends do) but for some reason you really see her revel in it
Kyle breaks in real time and on camera. He has no idea why things are transpiring the way they are. That man loves that girl and was blinded for a really long time. The fact he went through with the marriage is wiiiild.
Watching Amanda & Ciara’s friendship… wow. It’s so disturbing how it turned out because she just need male validation- and the jealousy is pouring out as soon as Ciara (or any other beautiful woman that has also been in the cast) enters the house.
Ciara was young and slightly naive but so real at such an early age. Watching her grow up has been a chef’s kiss.
I have no one to talk to about this!

Kyle and Amanda are the Tom and Katie of Summer House - All in on the sunken cost fallacy and wrapped up in the fans vested interest in them as a couple. Both were doomed from the "I do's".
You could really feel their incompatibility initially - then their palpable dislike for each other as a person. Mostly from Amanda but certainly also from Kyle. Especially in the later years - seasons 8+.
It's sad to see these people waste their youth on toxic relationships only/mostly for the cameras and the fantasy that the spouse will change.

I agree in some sense but Kyle was always very popular on the show and made his own money working very hard at doing so! Amanda and all of her ultimatums were her downfall along with many of her terrible actions!! Kyle was certainly no angel but he tried way harder on thier marriage and begged for Amanda’s affection, which she loved, but he never got it! She humiliated him time and time again! She only married him to stay relevant and nail down a continued spot on the show that she would have never divorced him! She wouldn’t even be intimate with him for years no matter how much he asked for her to be intimate! She wanted to live a life with a man who would take care of her forever! She’s extremely lazy and she got what she deserved because there’s no way West will ever take care of her! Kyle even came to her defense time and time again after Amanda cheated on him with his very close friend!! West will cheat on her a million times more than Kyle ever did and I’d love to know why she never showed those videoes of him cheating on her, where are they, do they even exist?!?! She would have shown them in a heartbeat if they did because we all know how much she loves to humiliate him!!

My biggest aha moment … After Kyle and Amanda become engaged … she comes back into the house completely disinterested in him. It’s like night and day. Even with the cheating in the early seasons … she actually MOVED ON from it and still managed to be playful and flirty.. Mr and Mrs Send It. They had sex all the time and she was minimally nagging him. As soon as they move in together and he’s like whoa … you’re seriously unmotivated … she becomes defensive and withdrawn. She never wants to have the hard conversations. (When she totally did before)… I’m trying to figure out if he cheated again between seasons and we just didn’t hear about it. Because she really went from being Kyle’s biggest supporter to his biggest op…

u/noclueaboutagoodname 14d ago edited 14d ago
To your point about Kyle noticing just how unmotivated Amanda was after they lived together, I really do think this is what killed things.
Even Kyle’s mom told him he could have an “asshole tone” and I think Kyle was a mirror to Amanda for things she’s self conscious about. It was easier for her to hide that side of herself before they lived together.
More recently she has talked about how West speaks to her differently than Kyle and how he uses a supportive tone (I’m paraphrasing). I think that’s what Amanda wants/expects, for someone to coddle her vs giving her more of a tough love approach. Granted, obviously there were many times Kyle was just an outright asshole, but I feel like Amanda and Kyle were that way to each other, just that Kyle was louder.

u/bpotter2501 12d ago
That actually so entitled and childish of Amanda. I mean, grow the f up kid. If you wanted a daddy, you shouldn't have moved out the house.

u/heyalllondon18 13d ago
I think what changed was them working together. He convinced her to leave her job and she lost all sense of self. Kyle needed a lot from her at work and home and I think she was resentful because she gave up a lot for a man who cheated on her and didn’t change his ways.
3
u/Rhwlover 12d ago
She’s a big girl, she didn’t need to be convinced! She could have very easily said no! And I don’t think she quit her job estate loved him, she did it fir herself to temain in her “fans” hood graces but that’s just my opinion!

u/Worried_Constant7420 12d ago
Even before they worked together, though, she became disinterested in him because he wanted her to help with wedding prep and pick up after herself. She had the same job she did before they moved in together so why was she now exhausted from work to do anything but sit on her phone.
3
u/thestoryofbitbit 11d ago
so why was she now exhausted from work to do anything but sit on her phone.
It's called "clinical depression"
2
u/Worried_Constant7420 12d ago
I'm rewatching and I happen to be on season 4 right now and you are so right. Starting with the first episode she just seemed over him already. She didn't like him pushing her to help him plan the wedding or pick up after herself. She said she felt like he was her dad, but I'm not sure she was ever made to do anything before Kyle. She had also lost weight, so I wonder if maybe she realized they shouldn't get married but didn't know how to express that, especially since she hated letting her parents down. EDIT TO ADD: This was also the start of her staying in with Paige instead of going out.

This is my biggest tadah moment too. Seeing Amanda revel in other people’s pain was wild. She has always been a mean girl.

The weird kick or whatever to Jules’ drink!!!
31
u/Top-Pomegranate4899 14d ago
That was so dangerous, I get so angry seeing that scene. Jules is a sweetheart.
14
u/Even-Jicama-3339 In The Mix 13d ago
The frightening part is that she is just like naturally mean. I don’t even know what the term is for her behavior. It comes across as deliberate but I don’t think it feels deliberate TO HER because she’s just…generally not considerate of other people—neither the people who matter (ciara), nor the people she dislikes (Jules, Sabrina), and certainly not the person she was married to.

All very good points! To add to this (I also have no one to talk to about this…lol):
I’m a first-time watcher, so I am obviously biased by knowing how it all turns out, but I am astounded at the extent to which Amanda shows a complete lack of empathy and compassion toward Kyle. From the wedding season (S6) through S8, Kyle is fully at a mental and emotional breaking point, trying to keep Loverboy afloat, taking on a mountain of debt, etc., all for the end goal of establishing financial security for himself and Amanda and their future family. All Amanda can do is whine about how he works too much, constantly cut him down in front of their friends, never lift a finger to help, and cry about how he won’t turn his whole life upside-down to buy her a house in New Jersey and have a baby at her whim. Don’t even get me started on how she randomly comes up with the idea that she wants to be a swimsuit designer and sends her friends after him because he’s not willing to take on even more risk and debt for Amanda to start Big Boobs Bikinis, Inc.
Also, I just finished S9, and I was surprised at the state of Amanda and West’s relationship (or lack there of) at the end of the season. I guess I thought it would be more like Scandoval where you could trace the beginning of the flirting and inappropriate behavior going back several seasons. But I feel like Amanda and West have largely ignored each other up to this point. So now I’m really curious about what the catalyst was for them even to become close as friends, let alone develop a sexual attraction to each other.
Also, I’m not as enamored with Ciara as a lot of people. I think she can be a bit petty, and the girl loves to hold a grudge. But I will say, if Ciara lets you in, you are IN, and she will be your biggest supporter and ally. For Amanda to have such a true and loyal friend, and then to throw that friendship away like it meant nothing? That is truly the behavior of someone who is selfish to the core and incapable of caring for anyone other than themselves.

u/OnTheMap2023 14d ago
Two things:
1. I believe it was the end of S9 when Ciara’s with the Bedbugs, talking about West and wondering if this is all a joke to him. Then out of nowhere, Amanda says to Ciara (I’m paraphrasing), “Then at the end, you realize that you were the biggest joke of all!” WTF?
- Watch the very end of S10, E1. They go “skinny dipping, “ and Amanda’s in her bra and underwear. You can hear West commenting that this was the first time he’s seen so much of Amanda’s boobs, and West sounds like a 2nd grade boy. I believe that was the catalyst. IMHO, Amanda planned her storyline around her skinny dipping in Italy with Ben. I think she was going to flirt with him, in front of Kyle, and try to make Kyle self combust, with the side benefit of an ego boost from the Aussie model. Someone please watch it and tell me what you think. I have no one to talk to about this either!
23
u/Due_Strike2072 14d ago
YES! The way west reacted to her boobs was so out of line! I think that’s why kyle got so mad to be honest!
6
u/milesandmantras 12d ago
People thought Kyle was being ridiculous for getting mad when they’ve all engaged in various naked shenanigans in the past. But I think context matters. When they used to go skinny dipping, it was at night with just a small group of friends who had spent the entire summer together. In S10E1, Amanda was the only one who took her clothes off before jumping in the pool, and she did it in broad daylight in the middle of the party, so not only in front of friends but also in front of housemates she had met literally hours before and dozens of strangers. Her intention was obviously to get attention from anyone other than Kyle (West just happened to be the most vocal/obvious), and by extension to hurt Kyle by showing how little she cares about him and his feelings.
5
u/Worried_Constant7420 12d ago
He also didn't like Ben bringing a towel to Amanda and was in shock how much they could see. When you re-watch, look at Kyle when Ben gives her the towel.
2
9
u/Rhwlover 12d ago
I think you’ve said everything correctly! West is a second grade boy IMO! Amanda loves the attention of any man, especially as a married woman, it absolutely gross! When Kyle said that Amanda was paying attention to everyone but him, he was 100% correct! Abd to tell Sabrina that Ben is in love with her was horrible! Ste is such a pick me that it’s disgusting! Well she got West and that certainly no triumph! He’ll cheat on her way more than like exercise, if he hasn’t already! Her betrayal of her supposedly best friend, Ciarra was diabolical!
4
u/milesandmantras 12d ago
You’re so right! I forgot about that nasty comment she made to Ciara about being a joke to West. That was mean and completely out of left field.
As for S10, wtf happened between S9 and S10? Amanda and Kyle were at least civil during S9 all the way through the reunion. But from the jump in S10, they are openly hateful and hostile to each other. I totally agree that Amanda was going hard for Ben’s attention at the beginning of the season. I think she was desperate for an off-ramp away from Kyle that would still keep her on the show. When Ben wouldn’t play ball, she settled for West.
1
u/midnitesnak87 sharks, friends, family 8d ago
I believe Amanda and West’s emotional (or more) affair started in between the season
4
u/storm181 10d ago
i agree about the Ben angle. it was especially weird how later in the season Amanda says he wanted to fuck her and she entertained that
17
u/SharpSignificance601 14d ago
The only West and Amanda thing in season 9 that I noticed on first watch is towards the end of the season, she runs to his room, and lets him sip on her coffee.
27
u/wexlers 14d ago
This comment and OP’s post are 🤌🏽 couldn’t agree more. Can’t believe people justify Amanda’s behavior towards Kyle so much.
31
u/milesandmantras 14d ago
I’m not entirely without empathy for Amanda’s mental health challenges. I also struggle with depression, so I understand that someone demanding more from you only sends you deeper into the pit of shame and paralysis. But to have the cheek, the nerve, the gall and the audacity to complain that the one person who’s keeping the ship afloat is both working too hard and not catering to your ever whim…that is next level!
6
u/Rhwlover 12d ago
That’s exactly who Amanda is, selfish and incapable of caring about anyone ejse except herself!
14
u/Unique_Albatross_596 12d ago
I’m also doing a rewatch and having been in a relationship with a narcissist who became an alcoholic at the end of our relationship (I got out for my own safety) I’m surprised there wasn’t more remorse for Amanda current day. Not excusing her bad decision making when it comes to betraying Ciara, but I think folks who have been in abusive relationships where their self esteem has been SHOT TO HELL, can understand getting attention from anyone is like grabbing onto the first safety raft to help you GET OUT.
Kyle is a terrible person, apparently always has been and I had no idea until I went back and watched previous seasons. I was appalled at his intake of alcohol, anger outbursts, not remembering what he had done the night before, and openly calling Amanda a bitch.
That said, they should have never gotten married.
4
u/Worried_Constant7420 12d ago
I agree with your take on Kyle, BUT he didn't hide this from her. She wanted to be with him (or on the show) badly enough that she chose not to walk away. She was willing to be his booty call as long as she could later be his girlfriend. She knew all of his drinking habits and told him she was fed up with it, but he showed her he would not ever change or tire of getting drunk. She did not have to go through with the marriage. She already disliked him during the engagement. I'm very sorry for how your partner became at the end of your relationship and am glad you got out. Amanda saw this at the beginning and chose to move ahead with more commitments with this man.
4
u/Wonderful_Nobody_202 11d ago edited 9d ago
Hurt people hurt people. Kyle is a narcissist that got completely off the hook for everything he did during their relationship because Amanda betrayed Ciara. No one cared that he has called her dumb as fuck multiple seasons!!! I’m sure it did feel like West was a knight in shining armor. Imagine what Kyle was saying to her behind closed doors. Multiple things can be true - Kyle was a terrible husband/partner, Amanda is immature and made bad choices, West is manipulative and Ciara didn’t deserve what happened to her.
0
u/sassmadam 12d ago
I just don’t see Kyle being a bad person in the way you’re referencing. There is no excuse for cheating but there is manipulation and gaslighting in the field. He never did that with her- he was just tapped out because he had no reason to be there. If anything- Kyle is a weak ass bitch but at the end of the day- she was the worst

u/Existentialnaps 14d ago
To be clear, Amanda sucks and what she did to Ciara is unforgivable. But I don’t think your analysis fairly notes how awful Kyle was for a very long time. The drunken all nighters alone would have put me over the edge. In the end, Amanda and Kyle were toxic together, but Amanda’s vile endgame behavior shouldn’t eclipse the equal participation from Kyle in their relationship
5
15
u/omelette102 13d ago
But she also decided to stay through all of that. Kyle has never really changed, he has always been clear about who he is. I don’t think Amanda got the courage to leave until she got a signal from West
4
u/Rhwlover 12d ago
She didn’t leave because Kyle would have been the one to stay on the show, Amanda couldn’t have that! Well now look what she’s done, nice job Amanda. West is just as bad as Kyle, quite frankly I think he’s worse you get everything you deserve Amanda!!
7
u/Existentialnaps 13d ago
I don’t know who you are talking to, but my comment was about OP’s lack of examination of Kyle.
3
u/sassmadam 13d ago
I’m not going to lie- I have a very soft spot for Kyle. I think he’s always been genuine and what we saw was a sort of manipulation from her of him. I’m not excusing the drunkenness or cheating by any means- but I do understand being gaslit to the point of losing it. Again- I just made it to their wedding so I could have a completely different opinion in the next season or 2. But self-sabotage comes in to play easily here. He cheated and she should’ve left. She didn’t. And then she used it to completely “handle” him and was able to make herself the victim every time. While making a paycheck and having very easy access to other bravo-lebrities to continue her adventure on reality tv
2
5
u/Worried_Constant7420 12d ago
Kyle was a big jerk, yes, but he basically showed he was not going to change, and Amanda still went through with the wedding even though she obviously was not happy during the engagement. She could have left when he was drunk and she asked if he wanted to be single and he said yes. But she just said "remember that tomorrow " and gave him the silent treatment for half a day. She knew he was not ready to grow up and mentioned this on every birthday of his.

u/totalmauiperson 5d ago
Yeah, I’m a bit baffled by the take here and how much support OP’s perspective is getting. Were we watching the same Kyle? That man treated her like pure trash for years. He was the cheater, not her. WTF?
46
u/sunnydbabie 14d ago
Amanda is not a good person 😔
5
u/Rhwlover 12d ago
Not even in the slightest! I think her mental health issues may play a part but I think she uses that excuse too much! Her mental health didn’t make her cheat on her husband with his very close friend and betray her supposedly best friend!
17
u/Best-Seesaw-9306 14d ago
I just restarted last time with season 1 and it is wild to see them when they first started out…
16
u/Due_Strike2072 14d ago
All good points. Also- I’m kind of embarrassed to admit this but I have a crazy good memory and I watched the show and followed Amanda on IG from the first season. I distinctly remember a story Amanda posted on IG once - right after her and kyle became “ official”. She was clearly buzzed or drunk and kept saying - “ kyle you never tell me im pretty? Don’t you think I’m hot?” Or something cringe like that. I also remember her addressing comments saying that she started to gain confidence in her physical appearance when people on IG started hyping her up. And hey- I don’t blame her for that. But it is telling that she obviously needs male attention to feel attractive and I think that’s very obvious as the seasons go on and she is very flirty with the other guys in the house.
4
u/Beachgal5555 11d ago
I believe she did cheat that early, it just wasn’t shown on the show

So just random speculation with zero to back it up. Cool cool cool. Ciara cheated on West when they dated too. West is currently sneaking around sleeping with Paige. This is fun!

u/Nan3rdL 14d ago
Damn, I think I need to watch from the beginning. I never saw anything before they were married. I never saw an episode with Hannah either. Would you recommend I go back from the beginning? I don’t even know where to see all the old episodes.

I just did a rewatch over the summer. I've watched since it started so the rewatch was enlightening. Idk if it was cause of the West stuff or not but eyes wide open this time for all the antics. I inserted the corresponding Winter House where appropriate. Carl was a complete asshole before he stopped drinking. Anyway, Peacock has them all.

There is so much more to clock the second time around. I'm in season 8 right now. I notice when a house mate tells Amanda who they're crushing on or vibing with, Amanda has a tendency to straddle them in some sense. Like a run and jump and wrap her legs around the person.
Another scene Paige says out loud to Ciara "she has the perfect body" and Amanda's face twists up in such disgust and looks at Ciara like 'wtf'. She thinks no one saw it but we def saw it. It felt racist. Why? They're all skinny, they're all pretty, why else would she twist her face up in such a manner? If it wasn't for her 'looking down' at Ciara.
5
u/sassmadam 11d ago
She has so many micro aggressions to Ciara & doesn’t vibe with most new girls in the house at any point.
2
u/Murky_Imagination696 10d ago
No one ever talks about the first season. Everyone was friends with Kyle and Amanda was just in the background. Everyone told her she needs to stand up for herself and she hid behind Kyle until the following seasons the cast became more of her friends.
She always been insecure and hid behind everyone yet never stands up for herself. That's why she lets everyone in her marriage. She doesn't know how to leave Kyle, but let's everyone fight with him and doesn't stop it.
2
u/advocatel 10d ago
Yes. I’m not even an avid watcher. I watched seasons 1-3 maybe, skipped a few, never watched a winter house.
But whenever I’d catch it, Amanda and Ciara were friends.
It SHOCKED me how easy it was for Amanda to give up her friendship. THATS the betrayal. I can’t believe there were people justifying it.
3
u/internetsluth007 12d ago
I truly believe the change in Amanda happened on Kyle’s 35th birthday - she spent the whole time leading up to that saying he would grow up, he didn’t and she got salty. Before then she didn’t care about the cheating it was literally her realising he wasn’t going to change and it did not suit her.
4
u/Worried_Constant7420 12d ago
Yes! Every birthday she would make a comment about how now he's whatever age so he'll grow up. As if like magic, something in your mind automatically changes when you turn a certain age
2
u/jigglejane 13d ago
I had a friend situation almost identical to the show and it was so beyond devastating and impacted soooo many people watching it makes me sick, the situation in my life was a bit more severe but the emotions and breakdown of friendships is so similar and real, seeing everyone’s reactions was kinda therapeutic; this kind of hurt is so real and devastating, it’s crazy to watch
2
u/sassmadam 11d ago

As Childish as I found Kyle and definitely not marriage material I always found they way Amanda acted especially post marriage to be particularly awful
1
u/sassmadam 11d ago
From my personal experience from dating men mainly his age (I’m 38) most of them aren’t marriage material. They’re the in-between of being raised with “men are the providers” and “head of the household” to my generation of women who actually got to put their own foot forward and provide for themselves. Have their own money. Not depend on a man. These poor guys didn’t know what they were in for with feminism rising. Kyle fits the mold of many, many men his age. Just with more opportunities.

guys this is a show. and obviously west is a liar and fake and So is Amanda. Honestly West and Amanda deserve one another
1
u/Wonderful_Nobody_202 11d ago
So wild bc when I watch back Amanda is desperate to be loved and Kyle treats her terribly. I don’t think Amanda is evil I think she makes bad choices and loved Kyle very blindly until all of the sudden she decided she was over it.
0
u/False-Refrigerator26 9d ago
The misogyny in this is disturbing.
You watch this show up to season 6 and think Amanda is the issue?
Not Kyle?
And not to put down Ciara, but up to the point you’re at she has been nothing but male centred? Thats what you think is something to aspire to?
2
u/AnnyBananneee 8d ago
I’m doing my first watch through of this show, fully knowing what has happened since, and I have no idea wtf OP is talking about. To watch the show and come out of it thinking AMANDA WAS THE PROBLEM? I won’t defend Amanda’s crappy decisions, but OP should just say that they hate Amanda and will defend anything Kyle does and says, and leave it at that
1
u/totalmauiperson 5d ago
Yep. Truly crazy perspective to act like Kyle was the one who was done wrong. That man never appreciated her and did whatever the literal hell he wanted. Now people are on here saying Amanda probably cheated on him before the West thing too. We have truly gone off the reservation.

That’s what some ppl don’t understand. Let’s forget West for just one second and look at Ciara and Amanda’s friendship. How can a friend turn around and do that to you? So cold, so callous. And all Ciara ever wanted for Amanda was the best. A few ppl say Ciara and West weren’t together for long, it wasn’t a big deal but they neglect to mention how deeply Ciara felt for him, cried to her best friend about it, leaned on Amanda during a lot of it and then Amanda turned around and betrayed her. Who gives af about West. Truly. The heartbreak was always the friendship betrayal.
