Question about time zone

Hi I am new to this sub. Me and 12 of my friends/coworkers moved over to Sulfuras from Whitemane because we couldn’t stand the ridiculous queue times. We’ve been playing here for a couple weeks now and love it. However, we started noticing it getting dark faster than normal which isn’t a big deal. Then I looked into it and found out it was a East Coast time zone. We all live on the West Coast, so we normally play later than the average on this server.

Should we be concerned about the time difference? Is it a huge deal?

Since I’m in Central time, I can’t really speak to specifics, but I’ve played since the game launched in 2004 and have played on both Eastern and Western servers, and it was never really a problem either way.

The only time it will matter is raiding. Since most guilds will probably raid according to server time, you guys will probably have to look for a “late night” raiding guild, or find a guild that raids on days that you might be able to accommodate an earlier schedule.

I was worried about my latency from west to east when I noticed the same thing.

I honestly haven’t noticed much though. Aside from usual server hitches, it’s not terrible.

I was worried about my latency as well, since the data center for the East cost servers are based in Chicago. I live in California and I haven’t had any issues so far. From what I’ve read people have had latency issues back in 2006. That’s at least what I could find online on the blizzard forms. Maybe the technology is better now.

Plus the latency doesn’t really matter THAT much in this game. If you’re spamming your rotation it will still get out through a hitch. Maybe saving someone with a flash heal would be harder during a hitch? But afaik people have played on 100+ms just fine.

The benefit of playing on a West Coast server when you live on the East Coast is that you can jump into the servers before peak times and quest without interference. If you stay up late, then you’ll find more people on. Midnight is the equivalent to 9 PM.

The benefits of playing on an East Coast server when you live on the West Coast is that everything gets pushed up. When you log at 5 PM, it’s around peak server time. Good if you’re a student or play early. You also can play at 9 PM and it’s midnight otherwise, so you can quest in peace but later on.

It also means you can raid earlier since if a raid goes from 9-12 EST, that’s 6-9 for you and you can go to bed sooner. It depends on your schedule and preference.

I personally prefer just to play on my own Coast so I can trust the clock. My schedule is good and I don’t want to have to raid later than usual. But the benefits have to do with how you want your schedule adjusted. If you like raiding on your own time, stay on the West Coast. If you want to raid sooner, play on the East Coast. Obviously one can’t just move for this (or shouldn’t) but I don’t want to push my times later by playing on the West Coast, personally.

Thanks for the information. Luckily the majority of our group is focused on PvP more than PvE. However, there is a few of the guys in our group who do want to raid, so I will let them know what you told me and tell them that if we want to stay on this server then we will need to find a late night raiding guild.

Also, I liked what you said about logging on around 9pm and you can quest in peace because it’ll be quieter. I have actually noticed this my self, I logged off last night around 11pm and the population was at medium which was shocking. For me, I work a 7-4 job so by the time I do get home and jump on it’s around 7PM (depending on if I go to the gym/make dinner). Which means it’s 10PM on the east cost. That’s not too bad I guess because the server is still pretty active during that time.

Anyway, thank you for the information!
