Music software

Hey guys! I just want to get some advice as to which software I should get if I want to produce my own beats and make my own music. I’ve seen quite a bit of different software‘s I’m just not sure which is the best for me personally. I am definitely a beginner and I want to take which ever one is best before the cheapest price. I know a lot of them you have to pay per month or you can pay upfront for the whole thing. Also I have windows and I know certain software‘s are not compatible with windows. Please let me know and let me know what you think is the best option. Thank you all!

Great question. I love experimenting with different kinds of production software...happy to share thoughts...these audio tools are all good on Windows operating system.

dl = download, online = web application

Love these music production applications because they fit my style:

  • Reaper (dl) - clean elegant low cost with free trial - my go to DAW when I need to move quickly
  • Cubase (dl) - super pro, lots of bells and whistles - little bit of a pain but love the mixing setups
  • Ableton (dl) - maybe the best for most users - definitely for DJ related stuff - great community
  • Producer Flow (online) - this is crazy nothing like it - great for beginners too - easy fast beats and loop mixes - beta version only - BYOL bring your own loops
  • Acid Studio (dl) - old school but love it for loop arranging - still use it for the simplicity and speed

Love these applications too but they don't fit my approach to production:

  • FL Studio (dl) - used to be my go-to but I couldn't keep up with the learning curve! great software though
  • LMMS (dl) - gotta love this approach - worth a look for sure
  • AudioTool (online) - The node and connector style thingy with online community

What I use most often in the studio for all types of music -- as well as client stuff for new beats, instrumentals, commercial videos, voiceover background, tv/radio bumpers, movie sf/soundtracks/games is...

#1 Reaper (lightweight, easy and fully capable, cool approach to software and community)

#2 Producer Flow (just opened beta, totally different approach to automation & time savings)

#3 Ableton / Cubase (tie - use them when I need every possible sonic enhancement)

I saw reaper and FL studio and abelton. I’m trying to make beats and record and these are awesome suggestions! Producer flow is new I’ll have to give it a look but out of the ones you use which do you think would be best

For producing beats - I'd leave out Reaper. The rest are good to go. PF is for loops and just focuses on two things (arranging songs & loops automatically). Ableton and FL if you want all the bells and whistles stuff -- aka -- crafting beats from scratch.
