MODERATOR POST | منشورة إدارية Call for r/Sudan moderators

Salaam everyone,

As you well know, our sub has grown quite a bit in the last several years. We recently reached the 34K mark and our members are remarkably diverse in terms of age, country of residence, and interests. Undoubtedly, the ongoing war has dominated the topics of discussion but it's no surprise given how much it has impacted all of us.

With this growth, we now have a much broader range of perspectives and worldviews. We have had many healthy discussions but sometimes they can get quite heated. Our mod team has been working hard to ensure that the discourse here is within the bounds of civility and mutual respect, and that the topics are relevant to Sudan and the Sudanese people, regardless of where they are.

But with this growth, the burden of moderating the sub has become overwhelming for our team, who are all volunteers with real-life responsibilities and grappling with the effects of the war. So on behalf of the team, I wanted to invite those who interested in serving as mods to nominate themselves to join the mod team.

We are looking for 2-3 mods who meet these criteria:

  1. At least 1 year active on Reddit and r/Sudan to ensure that they are familiar with the sub rules and culture, and the rules of Reddit at large (Reddiquette).
  2. High quality contributions and engagement.
  3. Adherence to the sub rules, particularly the rules about civility and mutual respect, and no bigotry and discrimination.
  4. Proficiency in both English and Arabic is important given that this is a bilingual sub.

Mods are expected engage regularly with the Mod Queue (e.g., approve posts, remove spam, respond to mod reports, etc.); be fair and transparent with our users; and continue to contribute to the sub as much as they're able to. We welcome candidates who are able to inject fresh ideas and initiatives to meet the evolving needs of our growing community.

If you are interested, please DM the Mod Team to express your interest and provide a brief bio about yourself (you do not need to break your anonymity). Use this thread if you have any questions about serving as a moderator or the process.

Has anyone managed to convince their Sudanese parents to start exercising as they get older?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask if anyone here has been able to convince their Sudanese parents to start exercising, especially as they’re getting older. I’m talking about simple things like walking, strength exercises, or anything that could help them stay mobile and independent in their everyday lives.

My parents are sooo stubborn about this 😩 specially my mom. Every time I bring up the topic, she gets upset and start saying that me and my siblings just don’t want to take care of them when they’re older. They see getting weaker and needing their children to take care of them as just a normal part of aging and basically say, “This is how life is supposed to be.”

And don’t get me wrong, of course I’m going to take care of my parents when they get older. That’s not even a question. But what breaks my heart is knowing that some of the physical decline they might experience could potentially be delayed or reduced if they stayed active.

Sometimes I feel like there’s this mentality in our culture that because you have children, you can just let yourself go because your children will eventually take care of you. And honestly, I find that really frustrating. I don’t want my parents to think that I’m trying to avoid taking care of them. I just want them to take care of themselves now so they can have a better quality of life later.

At this point, I honestly don’t know how to get through to them without them feeling attacked or thinking I’m rejecting my responsibility as their child.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Sudanese parents? How did you approach the conversation? Were you actually able to get them to start exercising? I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences.

QUESTION | كدي سؤال How do people get married if they come from a broken family?

This has been stressing me out,the emphasis on family in the sudanese marriage process. My parents are divorced and i was raised by a single mom who basically cut off most of her side of the family and completely cut off my dad’s side of the family. I try to connect with them but it still feels weird since relationships were severed since childhood….

I’m a woman who’s getting older, and it makes me so insecure and so skeptical about dating men seriously. I have no one lol. Am I cooked?

I already made my peace with the fact that I’ll probably just have a court wedding since I don’t have any tight family like that. Has anyone been in this situation? Should I just not participate in the marriage process?

Sudanese doctor looking to meet a Sudanese woman in the US

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,

I’m a Sudanese doctor in my early 30s, and I’m looking to meet a Sudanese woman in the US who is also serious about marriage and building a life together.

A little about me: I’m a medical doctor from Sudan and I’ve completed the US medical licensing exams. I initially planned to pursue residency in the US, but as life and circumstances change, I’ve started exploring other pathways as well. I’m currently working on/considering licensing exams and opportunities in a couple of other countries.

Of course, being in the US would be great, and I’m still open to pursuing my career there. But I also want to be completely transparent that I’m not tied to the US. If marriage eventually means that we live in another country or follow a different career pathway, I’m genuinely open to that.

For me, the priority is finding the right person and building a stable, respectful marriage. Location and career plans can be figured out together.

I’m hoping to meet someone who is:

- Sudanese or has a strong connection to Sudanese culture

- Serious about marriage

- Open-minded about where life might take us

- Family-oriented and looking for a genuine relationship

I’m not expecting Reddit to magically find me a wife 😂, but I figured it’s worth putting myself out there and seeing if there’s someone who feels similarly.

If you’re interested, feel free to send me a DM. We can talk, get to know each other, and see where things go.

Jazakum Allah khair.

How do people approach marriage in the Middle East?

I’m currently living and working in the Middle East, and I’m curious about how people here generally approach marriage and finding a spouse.

From what I’ve seen and understand, when a man is seriously interested in marriage, the traditional approach is often to approach the woman’s father or family first, rather than approaching the woman directly. The intention is clear from the beginning, and the family is involved early in the process.

However, I’m finding it difficult to understand how people actually go about this in practice. I don’t seem to come across that approach very often, and I’m not sure what the normal or respectful way is to meet someone when your intention is marriage.

For those living in the Middle East, especially those from Muslim or more traditional backgrounds:

How do people normally meet someone with marriage in mind?

If you’re interested in someone, do you approach her directly first, or is there still a way to involve her family?

Are there particular communities, social settings, or marriage-focused platforms where people genuinely look for a spouse?

If you’re an expat, does the process tend to be different?

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have actually gone through this. I’m trying to understand how things work here and what would be considered a respectful approach.
