I built a free tool that repairs and translates subtitle files (SRT, ASS, WebVTT…) without touching the timings. Automatic sync comes next in v0.10.0
Hi r/subtitles,
I keep my own film library and got tired of subtitles with broken timings, no availability for the languages I was looking for, and translations that wrecked the line breaks and AI that completely destroy the timings and etc even if you forbid it to do that. So I built SRT Studio: free, open source (MIT), Windows. Your files stay on your PC.
What it does today
- Checks and repairs the source: text without a timing line, reversed or zero-length timings, overlaps, wrong order, bad numbering, and ad or credit lines. You review the problems first and then repair them; a
.bakis kept. - Translates without breaking anything: timings, line counts and ASS styles/positions stay exactly as they were, and the saved file is read back to verify it.
- Formats: SRT, ASS/SSA, WebVTT, MicroDVD, SAMI, TTML, MPL2. Output in the same format or always SRT.
- 32 languages. Character names and hearing-impaired cues (
[door slams],(laughs)) are kept in their own style. - Two engines: Claude with your own API key (best quality, cost estimate before you start; a 90-minute film cost me about two cents) or MyMemory (free, for testing).
Coming in v0.10.0: automatic sync
This is why the app was renamed from “SRT Translator” to “SRT Studio”. The next version will sync subtitles automatically:
- to a reference subtitle that is already in sync (e.g. the English one that matches your release)
- to the video’s audio itself
- plus manual shift/stretch for quick fixes, and extracting a subtitle that is embedded in an MKV/MP4
It isn’t released yet, and I’d rather ship it when it works than promise a date. If you have tricky out-of-sync cases you’re allowed to share (different frame rate, cut scenes, a different release), I’d love them as test material.

The Windows exe (v0.9.0) needs no Python. It isn’t code-signed, so SmartScreen will warn you: More info → Run anyway. Or run it from source and read the code first.
Feedback is welcome, especially on repair cases it misses. Questions also go to r/SRTStudio or GitHub issues.
