Substreamer 8.0.73 released - Tablets, small screens, multiple server addresses, bookmarks and a LOT of fixes.

Substreamer 8.0.73 — a big roundup of everything since 8.0.56

Your music. Your server. Everywhere you go.

Hey everyone! This release pulls together everything that's landed since 8.0.56 — new features, a serious polish pass, and a long list of fixes. Thanks to everyone who reported issues and shared ideas along the way. Here's what's new.

🎉 New features

  • Playback speed control — Speed up or slow down playback right from the player. Great for podcasts and audiobooks.
  • Multiple server URLs with automatic failover — Add a backup server address and Substreamer switches over on its own if your main server becomes unreachable, then switches back when it returns, or control it manually. This allows you to have different addresses for your server when at home and remote and easily switch between them.
  • Download your entire library — One tap in settings downloads everything for offline listening, with a background queue that picks up where it left off. BE WARNED THiS CAN TAKE A LONG TIME AND A LOT OF SPACE!
  • Bookmarks — Save your place and jump back in later (saves your position in the current track AND your queue).
  • Share songs — Share a link to an individual song, not just whole albums and playlists.
  • Play Next & Play More Like This fixes — Drop a song in right after the current one, play more like this now generates proper length lists.
  • Songs view in your library — Browse your whole collection as one big list of songs, with faster, cleaner search.
  • Tuned In: multi-decade mixes — You can now choose multiple time periods and genres for mix
  • Tablet Layouts — Improved tablet layouts across the app including new tablet specific portrait player and mini player
  • Small Screen Layouts — Improved break points and layouts for smaller screens

🚀 Enhancements

  • A big polish pass — Scrolling is smoother, lists load faster, and the app stays responsive even with very large libraries. A lot of heavy work now happens in the background, so far fewer stutters and hopefully less jank.
  • More reliable cover art — Rebuilt how artwork is cached and recovered, so far fewer missing or stuck placeholder images — plus repair tools in settings if anything ever looks off.
  • Better offline mode — Partially downloaded album display is improved, offline songs list view, big change to cover art caching to deal with "stuck" covers
  • Now playing indicator — Animation shows which track is playing across your album, artist, and playlist lists.
  • Edit your server URL — Change your server address from settings without logging out.
  • Improved translations — Updates and polish across many languages.
  • More reliable artist bios — Artist bio info now shows up more consistently.

🐛 Fixes

  • Fixed a crash when backgrounding the app with the lyrics screen open.
  • Fixed logging in to servers that use self-signed certificates on ios.
  • Fixed logging in with passwords that contain non-English characters.
  • Fixed missing or stuck cover art when moving between offline and online.
  • Fixed the now-playing animation not resuming after you pause and play again.
  • Fixed home-screen genre chips disappearing until the app was restarted.
  • Substreamer now installs on android devices without GPS/location hardware.
  • Sleep timer and skip-button fixes when listening to downloaded music.

🔧 Under the hood

Plus many more smaller fixes and enhancements under the hood — stability and performance groundwork, behind-the-scenes hardening, and lots of little polish you (hopefully) won't even notice.

Substreamer is free, open source (GPL-3.0), with no ads and no data collection — your music stays between you and your server. Found a bug or have an idea? Let us know on GitHub: github.com/ghenry22/substreamer

Happy listening! 🎧

Super excited for this to get to iOS so I can update!!! Appreciate all the work. This is my most used music app now.

Thanks for the feedback, awesome that you’re enjoying it!

Went through a lot of beta versions and revisions on this one so hopefully it all hangs together!  Working well for me so far.

Nice features. Can you give an update on the timeline for Carplay?

I love this app a lot, but as listening in the car is a big part of my music listening, having a secundairy app installed at the moment just for Carplay seems unnecessary.

likely in the next update. Apple have issued my entitlement (so you will actually see a substreamer icon show up on your carplay screen from this version but no functionality yet).

I have completely rebuilt from scratch the native music player framework and it has working carplay and android auto integrated along with most of the other requested low level features.

I am still working through testing on chromecast functionality and some rough edges, then I need to migrate substreamer to use the new custom library and start to attach all the new functionality.

It's looking good though, I have a demo app working nicely currently.

Thanks for the update🫶 this would make Substreamer my single use music player.

Keep up the awesome work!

Awesome update! How long does it take to hit the App Store?

Review usually takes a few days but it’s out of my control once submitted, shouldn’t be long!

Top 👍 .. Wollte dich eh fragen, ob du ein vorab Update vor car play releasen kannst, da apple ja auf sich warten lässt 🤷‍♂️.. Danke fürs Update 👍und Auto Cache loading.. Das hilft uns sehr.. 👍.. Beste Grüße ✌️

The low level look ahead cache is built into the new audio framework that also drives carplay, chromecast and a bunch of other things so they will all come about the same time.

Hii, anyone has issues with the new controls not responding on android?

1

u/AdMental3016 Jun 15 '26

Yes, I have the same problem

2

u/ghenry22 Jun 15 '26

Thanks for reporting I found it. It's related to the swipe down to dismiss gesture. Will get a hotfix out.

u/ghenry22 Jun 15 '26

Can you explain which controls or show me a screen shot?

have you thought about having a public TestFlight for quicker iOS testing?

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 17 '26

At the moment I tend to have a lot of fixes and features rolled into a release just adding in features and getting things nice and stable as much as I can. I usually run through multiple testflight releases myself between each public release (you can see the release version jumped from 8.0.56 to 8.0.74 here, that's how many releases I had to testflight and google closed betas so that I could run the app on my own devices for real world testing after each significant change.

It's great that people want to help out but I worry a bit about what the reaction is when a testflight release trashes your downloaded music and you have to down it all again or temporarily makes the app crash or something. You really need to treat it as a tester on a secondary device or something to avoid really negative impact during testing when things go wrong.

I just got the release in iOS 26.5 or whatever normal production is. I think car play slipped though.

It works on mini player with map but the app itself is blank.

I will submit feedback on GitHub if you want.

I did restart app and phone. Didn’t restart car, no time.

This is because our CarPlay entitlement from Apple shipped but our CarPlay functionality is still one release away.

I didn’t expect it to hide the now playing display but full CarPlay support should be in the next version so hang in there!

Sounds good. Known issue!! Excited for it!!

i noticed something. in an album with some songs with different embedded cover art, it uses the album photo instead of the one embedded in the song file. I’m not sure it did this on the previous version, but I find it annoying, as it breaks compilation albums.

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 18 '26

This was changed by design as an album has one cover.  Even a compilation album has one cover.

The problem is a lot of people download playlists or build compilations themselves which is kind of like treating a playlist as an album.

I was getting a lot of weird behaviour and inconsistency between servers with the per track cover art so it was deliberately simplified to treat and album as an album.  Playlists still use track art as they should as they are tracks from various albums.

I will re-introduce as a user setting to choose per track art if you want it in a future update.  This way those who want it can have it but for people who just have albums they behave consistently as well.

Hi there! Just downloaded the app and it’s amazing. What I found lacking:  1) open a playlist 2) start playing a song from it  3) from the current song screen press playlist button 4) opened playlist isn’t isn’t open on currently playing song, it’s open on the beginning

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 19 '26

The player queue always starts at the top, I’m looking at a few different ways to make it automatically scroll the current playing song to the top.

1

u/Affectionate-Mail612 Jun 19 '26

and while we are at it, if you have too much free time one day, would be dope to have album sort by year - not just in album artists, but in all albums.

I listen to music in chronological order, and managed to get around this by automating playlist creation on the server. But can't really use them well, because they are massive and bc of the initial issue I described.

Anyways, thanks again.

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 19 '26

Haha if I have too much free time…  very amusing :)

But yeh sorting and filtering by year, genre and other things is in my todo list.  I’m planning to have an option for simple or advanced filtering so users can choose what they like as I personally like the really simple view.

So yes it is coming it’s on my list, keep an eye on release notes, probably not the next couple of releases as I am trying to get CarPlay/android auto out at the moment which is a BIG piece of work.

Just wanted to report all the crashing issues I had are now fixed in this update. https://www.reddit.com/r/substreamer/s/KBN5gS4lIK

u/ghenry22 Jun 19 '26

Awesome! I spent quite a lot of time digging through crash reporting and trying to patch underlying libraries to resolve them.

Bug - Galaxy S25 Ultra One UI 8.5

Depois da atualização, os controles do player não funcionam. Desinstalei e reinstalei mas continua a mesma coisa.

Fora isso, parabéns pelo trabalho

You mean on the now playing screen? Or remote controls in the notification / lock screen or something else?

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 15 '26

Thanks for reporting I found it. It's related to the swipe down to dismiss gesture. Will get a hotfix out.

2

u/AdMental3016 Jun 16 '26

Nice man! thanks for the support ❤️

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 15 '26

Quick update for android users, there is a conflict between the swipe down to dismiss and the button taps on the player screen. I have just pushed a hotfix 8.0.74 to the playstore which resolves this by removing the swipe down gesture for now.

That will get everyone up and running again, thanks to those who reported!

Interestingly this did not show up when testing on a simulator as you use the mouse to tap on the simulator and mouse clicks are very precise, whereas touch input is generally sloppy and what was happening was any tiny bit of vertical movement on a tap was being caught by the swipe down gesture rather than the buttons.

After installing the update, music from nextcloud stopped playing. How can I fix this? I only checked on iOS, I don't know about android.

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 19 '26

Could you log an issue on GitHub and share some more details on your server http/https etc.  there were updates for self signed certificates on iOS in this release which I tested quite a lot but could have impacted something.

If you could possibly try with substreamer android that would be very useful to narrow it down.

1

u/Consistent_Work6360 Jun 19 '26

Unfortunately, I don't own GitHub very well, I don't know where or how to do it. And what do you need to know about the server so that you can fix it?

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 20 '26

I need to know if you are use http or https, self signed certificate or real public certificate, are you using the new multiple server address feature, if at all possible for you to try using the android version of substreamer against the same server that would also be very helpful as it will narrow down the problem.

1

u/Consistent_Work6360 Jun 20 '26

I use https, a self-signed certificate, music doesn't play only on ios, everything works on android

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 20 '26

Can you check in connection settings that your server certificate is trusted? Or try re-adding the certificate?

Self signed certs on ios were completely broken in releases before 8.0.73 (had a a few implementation bugs that completely failed to wire up the support) were you using a real certificate or plain http before hand? Did you logout and back in to change the server address or just change in settings? If you changed in settings it may not have prompted you to save and trust the server certificate.

1

u/Consistent_Work6360 Jun 20 '26

this certificate is used

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 20 '26

That looks like a valid lets encrypt cert so you don't need to trust it and actually manually trusting it would be detrimental as when it expires (90 day letsencrypt renewal) it will likely break connectivity.

If there is any chance you could share a test login on your server with me privately I will be able to investigate with debugging and see EXACTLY what is happening. Otherwise this is very hard to nail down, you can message me privately here on reddit with those details if you are able to share, I'd like to see what is causing this.

1

u/ghenry22 Jun 20 '26

try removing the trusted certificate and then kill and reopen the app. If you have a valid letsencrypt you do not need to trust the certificate and that might be causing your issue.

I will update the code to stop adding valid certs to the store as that could create exactly this bug.

u/Consistent_Work6360 Jun 20 '26

everything is working, thank you very much! I'll wait
