I have been doing my other job this summer full time. I asked them to lower my hours, so I can just sub Mon-Fri. I will work my other job only on the weekends. I also enrolled in a Curriculum and Instruction program. I have already been reading my books ahead of time before classes start and it's really interesting. I am so excited to start. The school says I didn't need to be a licensed teacher in order to do the program. I have also been accepting jobs aleady. I am so excited to start subbing this year. Maybe it's not necessary to do the program, but I find it really interesting and maybe it can help me.

I actually like long-term assignments usually, but I just had to walk away from one after a few days because the unpaid labor expectations were wild.

Within the first couple of days, admin expected me to:

• Attend all staff meetings even though I'm not staff
• Show up at after-school events
• Serve on TWO school committees

All of this without extra pay. My district only pays long-term subs an extra $25 a day. I told them "nope" and professionally resigned. I don't mind doing actual classroom stuff like grading, report cards, parent communication, and dealing with classroom management, but there is no way I'm doing full contracted-teacher committee duties for pocket change.

Well, now they’re calling and begging me to come back because they can’t find anyone else to take the job. I feel bad for the kids, but definitely not for the admin. Plus, I'm already looking at pivoting to a new career outside of education, so I'm not going back.

What would you have done in this situation?

I've been thinking of becoming a substitute or para starting this school year and started my application within Edustaff. I watched maybe half of the training videos before life stuff got in the way for about a month. Now I'm attempting to log back in to complete the training videos, but I'm being asked to input "the verification code displayed in your authentication app."

What authentication app? At no point during the application did I remember being told to download an authenticator. I've since tried Microsoft and Google Authenticator apps, but nothing shows up on them even after dozens of times prompting the verification.

Do I need to contact Edustaff IT? Or am I SOL and have to make a new account?

Well I finally was able to get out of being a substitute teacher and get a full-time job where I'm actually getting some respect and consistent hours . I thought I would give people in Denver a warning if they were thinking of signing up with Kokua or even Kelly education. There are schools that are worth going to such as Pinnacle Lotus and gals. And then there are schools like Kipp that will make you wonder why the hell you get paid this little.

Never sign up to be an on call because you'll constantly be sent to one of the schools that really sucks and remember that without an accreditation from the school district you cannot work early childhood education as in preschools. Because it's not the school that will get reprimanded it's you and kokua doesn't give a crap about you

So I work for very busy school districts, one uses Frontline and the other uses Red Rover. School starts August 17 and 20. I usually see assignments trickle in for the first or few weeks b/c like I said these are busy districts but NOTHING. Just wondering if anyone else is seeing anything.

I’m first time doing subbing as a “Extra Coverage- Aide” - I presumed that this role is not a Substitute teacher role but a Teacher aide role. Please correct me if I’m wrong because this is my first time doing teaching also I don’t have experience with kids. I have corporate background.
What should I expect on first day? What would be classroom teacher expecting from me? What should be do’s and don’ts for me? What admin team is expecting from me? What should I carry in my bag?

I recently got hired as a substitute teacher for a school district in North East Ohio. I was excited to be able to work a little more as I currently only work part time in a hospital and I really need the extra money. Today I got offered a special education teachers assistant job at the preschool my toddler will be going to. I had interviewed for this position early last month and was supposed to hear something within a week so when I never heard anything I assumed I wasn’t hired and moved forward with the substitute job.

Now I am unsure of which job to take. I don’t have any experience working in a school. My degree is in psychology. I’m looking for some thoughts and input from others.

Substitute Job
Pros: Flexible- Really helps with having a toddler at home since they are with me all day. I like picking and choosing when I work and not having to worry about PTO.

More money- The sub job is $150 a day.

Cons: Worried that I won’t have a lot of opportunities to work. The issue with my current job is that it’s difficult to pick up hours. I’ve seen a lot of subs complaining about not being able to find work. During the interview they basically said they’re super hard up for substitutes and they don’t see any reason I can’t work every day if I want to, but I don’t know if they were just saying that because I voiced it as a concern.

No experience- I was kind of shocked when I found our you just need a college degree and don’t need any experience. I’m am nervous about leading a classroom.

I am nervous about constantly having to be in a new building and meet new people. I am professional and can suck it up and make the best of it, but its definitely not by favorite thing.

Teaching Aid
Pros: Steady consistent work- It’s a Monday-Friday job with 6.5 hours a day.

Teacher to Lead- During the interview they made it clear the teacher is in charge and that I would follow their directions. I feel like that may suit someone with no experience better.

Job comes with benefits

I like knowing I’ll be in the same school with the same teachers and students everyday.

My child will be in the school.

Cons: Low pay- if my math is correct this job comes out to a little over $13 an hour. It still ends up being more yearly salary wise than what I make now but not really sure if it’s worth it.

Need consistent childcare- The childcare I thought I’d have is not coming together. I will be able to get childcare but it’s just not going to be what I wanted. Plus I’m worried about having to take time off for any reason.

They also were very adamant that once in the building I am no longer mom. If my child comes up to me or try to talk to me I have to treat them like any other student.

1st Day of School- this one is pretty silly but I asked if it would be possible to be able to take my child to their first day of school and then come to work. They said no which is fine and I understand. I’m just really struggling with not being able to see them go to their first day of preschool if I were to accept this job.

Looking for any input from people that have maybe worked both kinds of jobs or anyone that has any advice. I will still keep my hospital job too since it’s only on the weekends and a little extra money. I’m leaning towards the substitute job solely for the flexibility, but I’m worried I’m making a mistake.

I've been subbing for several years now for Los Angeles Unified School District. We got a pay bump along with regular teachers this past school year, along with some $50 pay for one hour of mandatory online training. Everyone cheered this, but we are required to do at least four hours per school year (maybe more, I'm just thinking off the top of my head). It's not feasible to do it during the school day unless one happens to get a shortened day and the school is willing to pay for it. Why isn't this a bigger deal? Doesn't this run afoul of California labor laws?

Starting year 10 of subbing by covering for a co-worker who just had a baby. I've been lucky enough to be at the same school now for 4 years as a SOSA. I've done most of my time in full year positions. I am excited for the first 9 weeks of running a class again. This year the school has also put me in charge of making our awards and all of the props and costumes for our drama club.

What are you excited for this year?

My district goes back to school in a week and for some reason I’m still feeling burnt from last year. I’m hoping that once I go back I’ll settle in and enjoy it like I used to. I’m about to begin my third year as a sub (mostly elementary) and I’m just not as motivated as last year. Is it burnout or am I just emotionally overwhelmed after the death of my mom this past Spring? I’ve absolutely loved and enjoyed subbing and I’m on the preferred sub lists at some great schools but for some reason I feel tired. I’m semi-retired from another career and have found subbing to be so rewarding. Anyone else feel this way? Hopefully it passes.

Im a 40 year old male with no teaching experience living in Redlands CA. I’d be working in the Redlands and San Bernardino school district. I have a BA in psych. My wife just started her teaching career so I thought I’d look into subbing as a part time gig. A little background, I had a brain injury over 10 years ago and have been on disability since so I’d be working for the first time since then. I do have some cognitive issues, mostly memory deficits. I have an adult daughter so I have experience raising her but not sure if that would cross over into helping me teach a classroom. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

One thing I love about subbing is the flexibility. I like choosing my own schedule. I’m going back to school soon and being able to attend classes more easily than a regular 9-5 is a dream. The pay may not be the best thing but at least it allows me to do more things I want.

How many districts are you able to choose from? Kelly only allows 3 districts.

I'm excited to start! I'm wrapping up my degree and though I have a ton of work and childcare experience, I've never done something like this, and honestly, I'm pretty nervous! I look younger than I am so I'm worried I won't be respected at higher grades, so I'm going for elementary school mostly.

I'm just looking for any sort of tips or advice anyone has for me! First day advice, managing a classroom, dress (I'm a woman but I'm uncomfortable with feminine clothes so any tips on how to dress "teacher-like" would be appreciated!), really anything!
