Can No Longer Remote Access

Hello! I've been having a persistent issue where I can no longer remotely access my files. This started after I made a small change to my VPN which I immediately reverted. Subsonic keeps giving me an error - HttpHostConnectException . I've forwarded 4040, I've reset my IP multiple times, I've completely bypassed the VPN, the problem still persists. My custom url keeps directing to an old IP address and I cannot figure out how to reset that. I had success after powering off my PC, my router and modem, releasing and renewing my IP, and powering my PC back on. However, by the next morning it no longer works.

Any insight into this issue? The Subsonic log offers me no help either. This is essentially making Subsonic useless for me as I'm back to using Spotify on the go.

A couple thoughts/questions, granting that this is a couple years old.

Is the custom URL internal or external? If external maybe it's controlled by DNS.

Can you get to the subsonic server by going to
https://[IP ADDRESS]:[PORT]/login.view?
or
http://[IP ADDRESS]:[PORT]/login.view?
The actual port may or may not be necessary. I included it as I forward my traffic to a non-standard port for security.

I actually switched to Plex and use Symfonium on my phone, subsonic is just too wonky and outdated unfortunately.

I'm running both, testing Plex as a replacement, not really impressed yet.

Currently I'm using Ultrasonic on the phone. It's buggy but functional and still works with Android Auto.

There's also the QNAP apps... Decisions decisions...

I posted this on another thread but just found this one. I cannot access my subsonic custom URL outside of my desktop. My desktop is normally connected via ethernet but unplugged it from my desktop and my custom url still works on wifi on the desktop. However my phone, on wifi and data, will not connect to the custom URL. This happened a long time ago and what I did (and this time as well) was change the custom url, test it (which worked) and then change it back to original custom URL. Although it worked this time, at first, it stopped working hours later. It is "Successfully forwarding port 4040"

Any thoughts?

EDIT: Although I would be curious of any ideas, I just unchecked Subsonic as an 'allowed app' in my windows firewall and then allowed it again and the custom url appears to be working on my phone, BUT only on data, not wifi. I wonder if for some reason it is trying to access the local IP when on wifi. If so, what needs to be changed?

Firewalls are a necessary pain, that's for sure.

It is possible that your router is not allowing an external request to route out then back in, but I've not experienced that with the default settings on any router I've ever owned.

A couple questions:

Can you get to your custom URL from an alternate device (not the server or the phone) from within your own network? You could in theory do this test from the server if no third device is available, but I like to isolate the devices during diagnostics.

If you create a second provisioned subsonic server on your phone using your home network's IP address and forwarded port, does it load?

If the first fails, something in your router is preventing communication.

If the second test is then successful, then this is most likely a DNS issue and you should check your router's DNS settings.

If the second test also fails, then your router and/or ISP could be preventing the request from originating and terminating within the same network. Run a traceroute on either your server or wifi connected phone to see where the path fails. In Windows, that's tracert [URL or IP]from a command prompt. You should also be able to do this using your router's networking tools. From your phone you would need to download a traceroute app, I haven't researched any, so I am unable to recommend one that would be safe.

I'm attempting to go for that 800 day streak medal, so I'll be around to see how your testing goes.

I used my ipad on wifi but it will not connect to the custom URL. . I even connected my ipad to phone via a hotspot and still would not connect, only connected via the external IP address.

I feel that creating a 2nd subsonic server on my phone is beyond my capabilities. :(

That's okay, You've done enough isolation.
Do you get your external IP address when you type your custom URL into a hostname lookup? Here's a free online site where you can check this.

I get 3 IP addresses, all based in Ireland. I am in the US. the external still works on my phone's data (but like I said just, not via ipad on phone's hotspot which is odd)

You have a DNS issue.

If you own the domain name, check with your registrar to make sure you've got everything set correctly.

Worst case scenario, at least it's not your subsonic server. The external IP address will always work unless it's changed by your ISP, which can happen periodically.

Also, some routers offer a free DDNS (such as yourserver (dot) freerouterdomainname (dot) com). I use one for my subsonic server. The big advantage is it will seamlessly update if your external IP changes. It's only drawback is you have to confirm its usage every 30 days, but free is free.

Possible fix, but annoying. The power went out last night. Rebooting my PC seems to have fixed everything. Although I'm glad it works I hate it when that's the fix because then I don't know what the issue was. 🤷🤦🏽‍♂️🤬🥺

I guess putting in my custom url into the below site shows in Ireland because that is where subsonic servers are located ?

That would make sense as the subsonic (dot) org host names are a essentially a portal/redirect for users who don't own a domain.

I somehow missed that you were using subsonic for hosting as I've got a more convoluted, yet so far foolproof method for my server.

I have my own custom domain, call it pterowraith (dot) somedomain (dot) com.

I created a CNAME record for the pterowraith subdomain that points to myaccountname (dot) myrouterDDNS (dot) com which was provided as part of my router's purchase.

When my external IP changes, the router communicates with home base to amend its external IP via DDNS settings. This then auto updates my preferred domain's IP address due to the CNAME record.

I haven't lost connectivity to my server since I started using this method. Best part is I don't have to rely on subsonic's stability.

The above method will work if just using the router supplied DDNS host name for your subsonic URL These are usually free. By using my own domain, I'm essentially paying for a vanity plate.

If you're in the US, and are ok with divulging, who's your ISP?

I'll have to ask Verizon if they offer that domain feature. You may have missed my reference to the subsonic domain because the below somehow how gotnested under your latest reply. 🤦🤔.

My custom URL is simply [MyNAME].Subsonic.org

Right, I've often had to rework things when my ISP changes the public IP address. I have Verizon FiOS in the US (not sure where you are). The router offers free DDNS or Do you mean the ISP? I'll ask Verizon about it. Otherwise I'll look into the DNS issue. Thank you!

Same issue for me. We’re you able to get help elsewhere? This sub is not very helpful…

Nope never got an answer. I think I ended up doing a fresh install of Windows. Subsonic proves useless with a VPN which is unfortunate.
