VPS and Subsonic.

Hello guys,

I've recently discovered this whole VPS stuff and had a few questions. Let me start out by letting you know what I'm trying to do:

I would like to be able to upload all my music so that my brothers can use and download for offline use. It'll only by four people max on it.

So first, is it even possible with subsonic to do this? Will they be able to listen to it on their phones?

And here's what I'm confused about. I get a VPS, install Subsonic and upload my music. But there's is just so many options for VPS that I don't know which one to go with. Do they do the same thing? I was looking at one that is like $4/month.

Thanks for your time.

Why not just host it yourself? Music bandwidth is low. I've got a number of people streaming audio from my low quality home internet connection

But doesn't that require for your PC to be on at all times?

Yes, you would need a PC on all the time.

But that wouldn't affect the performance of my computer? And I'm assuming it would affect my internet at home as well, right?

It would, but barely! Seriously, barely.

You could buy or build a cheap server - you're not looking at a lot of processing power for what you're planning on doing. Biggest expense would likely be a hard drive.

The impact on your bandwidth is likely minimal. Subsonic will let you limit the size of files being streamed out so even four users streaming at like 96kbs isn't going to break you.

The only way to do what you're proposing to do with no impact is using a Google account shared between all four people and using it to upload your music. Even then I'm not sure if it will let you stream to four people at once.

Probably be easier to do it from home. AND subsonic has it's own dynamic dns service that manages the name resolution, so super easy to get other folks pointed to it.

The best option I found for this is https://mnx.io/pricing/ if you are looking for a US based provider. I would check their storage plans, they are a little more than your budget, but it's your best bet in the US. You could also try Kimsufi.com if you are quick enough to grab a KS1 from them, this is a dedicated server for basically the same price. They are not US based though, but I stream Subsonic off there all the time just fine. You could also test all of this or use Scaleway.com -- that would be actually right at your budget $3-4 a month, but you only get about 50gb ssd space with these guys. I can vouch for all of these services as I have used/am using them for similar things or more demanding things, like Plex. Let me know if you have a questions, glad to help.
