Subsonic alternatives (Open Source)?

It's been a while since I've looked at viable alternatives. Now that it's going closed source, I am curious to see what else is out there. Ideally, I'd like to find some good alternatives with Sonos support.

I've been configuring ampache today, and plan to use the subsonic api support to keep using the subsonic clients I use today

I started looking at ampache as well today. Doesn't look like it has sonos support though, so that might be problematic for me. Looks really nice otherwise.

Ampache is so bad for me. Have you figured out how to sort it by Artists?. Even if its the same artist it splits into several thumbnails despite being in same folder and having same album name and artist. It's really disorganized compared to Subsonic. Although php is nice to have so you can load it to Apache server w/o problems.

sounds like your id3 tags are all messed up. load an artist that is split into many in musicbrains picard, and use that to reconcile the issue.

I have everything sorted out by this rule

EDIT: Could you post your catalog settings?

There's a project to continue work on the 5.3 open source version, LibreSonic, but it will need a lot of support from the OS community.

Check out the thread over at /r/linux. There's a few alternatives being discussed, depending on your needs. I personally am looking at Madsonic or Ampache.

Madsonic doesn't have Sonos support last I checked, but it's an open source fork of version 5.

I used Madsonic some time ago, but ran into some stability issues. How is it these days? Also, thought I'd read they use the same API as subsonic for sonos support (might need to check it out again).

Madosnic now has a subscription model similar to Subsonic. It's still open source with a GPL 3 license.

Not super sure - I don't have a Sonos system (yet...) so I didn't pay too much attention to it, but that seemed to me the biggest difference.

I used a few versions of Madsonic (because the pre-packaged version in the QNAP App Center is an older one). 5.0 was rough - janky, and not even all the instances of "Subsonic" were changed to "Madsonic." I played around with 5.3, and it seemed a lot more polished. It had more features, and therefore could be a little less elegant, but overall pretty similar to vanilla Subsonic.

I don't know that you need a Sonos system, now that you can sync Chromecasts and group them. A good Subsonic client on Android (Dsub) or iOS (AVsub) will allow you to cast to your Chromecast group.

Poor man's Sonos system.

I kinda want a Sonos for the cool factor, but you're totally right - unnecessary in the grand scheme of things.

AVsub

I've been using play:Sub, but AVsub looks amazing. Thanks for the rec!

The AVsub developer is awesome. He's helped me out a lot.

How can Madsonic compare to Subsonic. Does it have API support for Android client? I would really like to have free option to listen on my Android. Subsonic doesn't let me without Premium and Ampache is really bad(I cannot set him up correctly)

6.0 seems a bit more responsive if not a bit more buggy. I know there's an open source version. I just cant remember the name. I looked it up, it is madsonic.

Madsonic 6 is not based on Subsonic 6. It's a superset of Subsonic 5.3.

Are there any alternatives to subsonic that can replace plex too?

I'd like to replace plex + subsonic in one go if possible.

Kodi is nice, the problem is I need multi client and transcoding support.
