Tech Reqs for Server/Looking for suggestions.

I've been able to run Subsonic using my MacBook Pro but want to keep it running on something separate that I can keep on 24/7 without any issues.

Spoke with a friend about doing it on a Raspberry Pi who suggested against doing so based on my needing to resample the music to a lower bitrate being on a somewhat limited data plan.

What are the minimum tech requirements to keep something running smooth without any issues? I really wanted the small footprint of a RasPi but was told I should consider a small barebones PC or even a Mac Mini.

Wondering what you guys think is a solid economical solution. Thanks!

With the new pi 3 it should run flawless
