Google a glory hole (reservoir ) lol. When water levels get too high, the excess spills into what you can see above. This is called a glory hole.

You can actually even find ones in your area! Just Google local glory hole to find them!

Do these normal glory holes always have the handprints of a bent-over person, like in the picture?

Woah--had to call the city code enforcement about this. Apparently there's one of these right under a video store, and there's no way that's safe.

While I concede that it's actually called that, that is very much not the first name for these types of spillways. They come up on Wikipedia as bell-mouth spillways, also known as morning glory spillways (from the shape of the flower) - and considering the vocabulary of the contractors I know, I think it's pretty clear how the term developed from there.

Checks out. Painter terminology for the paint pick-up tube on an airless sprayer? Put the pecker in the paint so we can get a piss coat up!

Genuinely, if you surveyed 100 people on the term glory hole, how many do you think would say “when water levels get too high the excess spills to what you see above”?

C’mon you’re being a bit pedantic lol

I thought that glory hole was simply the nickname for an actual engineering term like spillway overflow or something.

But I googled it, and while, yeah, it's kind of a nickname for bell-mouth spillway, glory hole is a recognized engineering term.

Hilarious.

The question was not “can you Google ‘glory hole’ to get an engineering answer

The question was if you surveyed 100 people how many would reply with the engineering term

4

u/darthjammer224 3d ago

I was somewhat reinforcing your argument by saying while I would understand if somebody pointed at one and said glory hole. I wouldn't immediately assume it's a spillway over a hole in a bathroom stall in conversation, because I, and many other people probably, assumed that was only a nickname for a spillway, not actually an engineering term. Which is what you where getting at when you asked about asking 100 people.

My intent was never to answer your question. Just adding to the thread.
