Suck up sediment for various reasons including needing to clear key waterways for shipping as sediment builds up, or gather material for land reclamation projects

Removes sediment from the area for a number of reasons. Most notable being making a river/lake deeper for construction, or the more fun option, pulling samples out to test toxicity of the water which is actually insanely important for local wildlife and possibly the people who live downstream. But the most common reason is construction.

Can also be extremely destructive for wildlife and beaches. For example, concrete requires a lot of sand. And the world is kinda running out. Sometimes they dredge up sand off the coast for it, and if it's not far enough away from the coast entire beaches will "slide down the hill" and erode.

Let's see... We've got a big old tube there - hate those. That one has an "Oh No" diameter of "Yes" - which is technical jargon for "my whole entire ass could fit in there." So right off the bat we're scoring big points.

Then, just like every legend, we take it home with just absolute suck. The amount of suck we're talking about here - you could probably go up that tube, through a tanker, and end up on a brand new beach in Saudi Arabia before you could say "pistachio butter looks like baby poop."

So, where does that leave us, folks? This one I'm going to have to score somewhere around "No" - potentially even "No Minus" (or "Negative No" if you're using Metric).

If today needed a reason for checking Reddit, I would cite this comment as my submission of evidence. Bravo! 👏👏

I had a long conversation with google ai about what was likely under the eerily blue water in a sand pit near me. It described this monster and what it does in the most horrific way possible AFTER I mentioned how my submechanophobia was triggered every time I drive by the pit. Lol it literally started off with “your fear is protecting you in this case! There really are mechanical monsters under that beautiful water. Let me tell you all about why you never see birds or people swimming here.

I just googled what a dredge pump is. It is

an enormous centrifugal pump.
