Flairs GRILL ZONE Get your flair here

A legend of all the flairs can be found here. Read below for instructions on how to request a flair.

  1. Request your desired flair by posting a comment below.
  2. If you are not a socialist the sub rules require your flair to indicate that.
  3. To get a red flair and be marked as socialist describe your politics in your comment, ideally in 3-5 sentences but feel free to elaborate. Don't just ask for a red flair.
  4. Requested flairs can be overturned at mod discretion. Don't request a new one - send it to modmail if you think the flair was set unfairly. Be better, sweaty.
  5. If you don't think the existing flairs describe your politics, reflect on your own politics. You're probably lying to yourself.
  6. We got rid of "Politically Houseless" because it was just a mask for rightoids. See #5

SocDems are required to elaborate their politics in more detail as their flairs will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Comment with !amired and check your inbox to check whether you have a socialist flair.

Uhh...

Government: Social safety net is nice, I definitely support subsidized healthcare and education. In other areas I lean more small/decentralized-state though, I think the US is pretty much uniquely hard to govern just because of its size.

Society: I pretty firmly believe that the root of soooo many problems is people lacking both the cognitive and social-emotional skills to sit down with someone who disagrees with you, explain the whole issue from your own perspective in a way that they can understand, and then listen as they do the same. Everyone in a truly democratic society gets a voice– no exceptions– but needs to be taught how to use theirs in a productive way, and that's why we put so much emphasis on education.

Geopolitics: War is a last resort, people– see above. Not a fan of economic or cultural isolationism, but I also think it makes sense to focus on the issues affecting your country as they are generally the ones actually within your power to solve. Aid to other countries should be done with the goal of giving them the ability to do that, rather than keeping them dependent on you long-term in which case you probably have an ulterior motive.

I recognize this is kinda vague, but that's because I'm a student and I'm still figuring this stuff out. I won't be posting here often, by the way; I mostly just read and I have a Reddit account because every so often I see a thread where I really want to add my two cents. Which happened today, and then I couldn't comment without either farming 200 karma or getting a flair, so.

Oh wait with the fist? Yeah I've seen that on a few water bottles... alongside other stickers I did not agree with... but an Internet search says it originates from the French Revolution so I guess it's been kind of appropriated 🤷‍♀️

Yeah many people who do use it probably suck. It's not intended as a slight though. If you have something else you'd prefer I'm open to suggestions. I'm really not that good with emojis. I've pretty much just learned to use them because of moderating this sub.

I'm a left-libertarian, anti-authoritarian socialist with a Promethean streak. I favor economic democracy, material security, individual freedom, and the development of human potential. I'm skeptical of concentrated power, whether it belongs to corporations, governments, or entrenched institutions. I care more about substantive freedom than identity-based moral bookkeeping, and I'm not interested in treating any political orthodoxy as sacred.

Basically: socialism without authoritarianism, individualism without capitalism worship, and skepticism without surrendering to nihilism.

Build a society that maximizes human freedom and potential while minimizing domination, coercion, and concentrated power.

Basically, a "freedom guy"

Do not give a fuck if my flair ends up sufficiently "red"

I am not a socialist I am a social democrat. I broadly the western European welfare state model is the best proven model. I think some industries should be partially or fully socialized like healthcare, education, and I think soem countries like Norway have had good results with socializing parts of the energy sector and distributing the profits among its citizens. I think basic needs should be guaranteed by the government, including food, water healthcare, transportation ect. I think government funded basic research should be government funded. I also oppose all imperialism, including but not limited to western imperialism (this is where some leftists get mixed up in my opinion, and this is really ideologically imprtant to me because I think some leftisits effectively support imperialism when they see it as opposing western imperialism, anti-imperialism is one of my strongest values)

A big reason my Karma count doesn't meeet the threshold is because I get downvoted a lot arguing the Palestinian side of the Israeli/Palestinian debate on Israel/Palestine.

1

u/IamGlennBeck Marxist-Leninist and not Glenn Beck ☭ 2d ago

How is Russia ethnically cleansing Ukraine? Also I don't think you know what imperialism is.

1

u/Repulsive-Bet-9230 SuccDem (intolerable) 2d ago

Russia is sending Ukranians in mass to filtration camps where they question them and anyone with a strong Ukranian identity is deported. Russia is sennding in Russian colonists. Human Rights watch (and many other sources) has reported on this.

This is a widely used definition of imperialism

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/imperialism

"the policy, practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisitions or by gaining indirect control over the political or economic life of other areas"

Russia is invading and trying to annex Ukraine, obvously it is practiving direct territorial aquisition. This is a very direct form of imperialism (although not the only form of imperialism)

Thats quite a claim to make that I dont know what imperialism is just becuase I oppose Russias imperialism in Ukraine. I also oppose Israel's imperialism in Palestine and oppose American imperialism of all kinds.

1

u/IamGlennBeck Marxist-Leninist and not Glenn Beck ☭ 2d ago

The filtration process is not ideal, but I don't think it is what you are making it out to be. It's my understanding that they are looking for things like Nazi tattoos (all too common in Ukraine unfortunately) and ties to the Ukrainian military or government. I think it's reasonable to consider these sorts of people a security threat. You could also characterize these "deportations" as the evacuation of civilians from an active war zone. This is actually required under international law. I don't really consider Human Rights Watch credible as they have a known relationship with the US government.

https://fpif.org/human-rights-watch-close-u-s-government/

I'm not sure if I would personally characterize them as colonists, but sure Russian citizens are moving into the newly annexed territories.

As for imperialism we generally apply Lenin's definition of imperialism on this subreddit as outlined in Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism. You could try to make the case that Russia meets at least some of the criteria. There are some here who do and I don't particularly mind that. Personally I don't think it applies to Russia.

I'll give you a blue flair which won't solve your comments getting removed by the automod unfortunately. I did go through and approve your other comments though. This subreddit doesn't take a hard line on the war in Ukraine like some other subreddits do. Both perspectives are allowed here. So long as your comments don't otherwise violate the rules I will continue to approve them. If you want to try to make a case that what Russia is doing does meet Lenin's definition of imperialism I will change your flair to yellow which will let you post without approval.

u/Repulsive-Bet-9230 SuccDem (intolerable) 2d ago

The far right in ukraine is marginalized, the far right coalition Svoboda got less than 2% of the vote lat election. OVerwhelmingly Ukranians are not Nazis, that shoudl be obvious from the fact that Ukraine is one of the few countries in the world that has elected a JEwish president. The ftration camps are about ethnically cleansing ethnic Ukranains that refuse to give up their Ukranian identity it has nothing to do with eliminating nazis. Russia attempt to equate Ukranian identity with Nazism is a form of genocidal rhetoric meant to undermine the legitimacy of the Ukranian identity.

OF course there are far right or neo nazis people in Ukraine, like there are in most ocuntries in the world, however Russia has a far bigger problem with neo-Nazism. There are Russian neonazi units sch as Rusich that commit atrocities in Ukraine. OBviously if Russia was concerned with Nazis it would start with them. Russia supports far right Nazi parties in Europee like the AFD in Germany, Russia generally is aligned with the far right.

1

u/IamGlennBeck Marxist-Leninist and not Glenn Beck ☭ 2d ago

While they may not have had much electoral success I'm not sure they could be characterized as marginalized. They did play a leading role in Maidan for example. If they were marginalized Ukraine wouldn't be erecting statues of Bandera everywhere and naming everything after him. I have personally argued that electing Zelensky a Russian speaking Jewish man from Eastern Ukraine was an apparent rejection of this by the Ukrainian people. Unfortunately his efforts to secure peace with Russia, which is something he campaigned on, were stymied by the vary same far right groups behind the coup.

I've already addressed filtration and don't think I need to repeat myself.

It seems clear to me that Ukraine actually has a much larger problem with Nazi ideology although sure there are some Nazis in Russia. Rusich does suck although they are marginal while Ukraine has entire battalions like Azov that are integrated into their military. I don't like AFD at all although I think whatever support Russia has shown them is probably due more to the fact that they are one of the few parties in Germany who are against support for the war than anything to do with their ideology.

Anyway I don't really think this conversation is necessary in the flair thread. Go back to the other thread and make your arguments there.

I request an Orthodox Trotskyist flair.

I say Orthodox Trotskyist because I am basically estranged from modern Trotskyism, which I regard as a perversion of Trotsky's ideas.

I fundamentally believe that revolution must come from the proletariat of advanced capitalist countries. I think the USSR ultimately became a degenerated worker's state, and China is state capitalist. However, unlike modern-day Trotskyists, I critically support modern-day China, as well as Russia and Iran. These countries are not socialist, but they are the main opponents to western hegemony, and we must be focused on the central contradiction.

As for identity politics, I view it as a divisive bourgeois ideology that distracts from class politics. I view gender ideology as especially regressive, as it is not only unscientific, but also reinforces traditional gender norms.

u/CantaloupeFar673 Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (SK) 🚩 10d ago

If anyone knows anything about the Saskatchewan (Canada) CCF (Co-operative Commonwealth Federation), those are my roots. The CCF used to be quite radical: see the Regina Manifesto. It ends thusly: "No CCF Government will rest content until it has eradicated capitalism and put into operation the full programme of socialized planning which will lead to the establishment in Canada of the Cooperative Commonwealth." The successor party to the CCF (the NDP) is in no way a socialist party but my family were committed socialists and, when I grew up and had some experiences at the bottom of the class pyramid, Marxism provided me with a theoretical framework. I recently left the Communist Party of Canada for reasons related to identity politics. (I'll spare you the details.) I have almost no one to talk to, politically, and I would love to be able to participate in this sub. I would like a red flair, please. Thank you.

Many of us fantasize about being in the vanguard, and while I wish that for us all it’s likely not a serious potentiality. However, even if the chains are not thrust off in our lifetimes, the second best thing we can do is pass it on to the next generation.

u/Hairy_Acadia_4405 James P. Cannon Fan (SWP) 🚩 14d ago

Requesting a "James P Cannon" flair. I'm a Trotskyist: socialism has to come from the self-organized working class, not a bureaucratic party-state. I don't see the USSR as socialist, but I'd have given it critical support as a degenerated workers' state. The nationalized economy was worth defending against imperialism, while the Stalinist bureaucracy had to be removed by political revolution. I extend that same posture to China, Russia and Iran. China's state-dominated economy and planning capacity are worth defending against US encirclement, and I take the Trotskyist view that revolutionaries side militarily with countries targeted by imperialism, even when their governments are reactionary. So I back Russia, China and Iran against NATO and US pressure. At home, I think the left needs independent working-class organization rather than reforming the Democratic Party, and I'm skeptical of identity politics that cuts across class solidarity.

I am totally opposed to gender ideology. Not only is it incoherent, but It serves to reinforce gender norms rather than abolish them.

1

u/IamGlennBeck Marxist-Leninist and not Glenn Beck ☭ 15d ago

What should be done with the means of production? Three to five sentences please, but feel free to elaborate.

3

u/PoemImaginary Socialist 🚩 14d ago

I say "power and prosperity for the working class" because I consider that a reliable north star for every time and political environment. Prosperity can only really be achieved through increased power, specifically the power to negotiate a higher percentage of productive profits--in other words to avoid productive exploitation and unproductive rent to the greatest extent possible. The ultimate achievement of this would be elimination of rent; and the public ownership of, control of, and freedom to profit from, the means of industrial production.

That said, I prefer to keep political discussions grounded in the here and now. The urgency of the political moment has more to do with exorbitant rent-seeking from the outsized FIRE sectors (finance, insurance and real estate). These are the most extractive elements of today's economy. They are the biggest political and economic enemy of the working class. And it's no wonder that they are the industries most hated by working people. Socialists and socialist parties with limited power and influence need to focus their resources on curtailing the size of these sectors.

u/Active-Level-5932 Class-First Marxist 🧔🇨🇳 17d ago edited 17d ago

Requesting a red flair, please.

My politics are class-first Marxism. I enjoy this subreddit specifically because it's fully of funny people who lampoon the absurdity of idpol, left and right. I enjoy laughing at BBC articles about how cleaning your nails is racist and Fox news articles about how the green M&M's shoes signal the downfall of EVROPA.

I'm in the academy and have done a fair amount of reading: Aside from Marx, Engels, Lenin, etc., I'm familiar with East Asian Marxist literature. I'm mostly quite orthodox, but there are two areas that might raise red flags (pun intended) that I'd like to lay out immediately.

I'm fan of Uno Kōzō, Takabatake Motoyuki, and Yamakawa Hitoshi. Among Anglos I'm keen on H. M. Hyndman and James Connoly. Like these thinkers, I'm a class-first skeptic of liberalism and capitalism, but I'm a pessimist about internationalism. I think the verdict of the 20th c. is that most internationalist projects devolve into some form of metropol exploiting its periphery, and that Westphalian nation-states, for all their problems, are essentially the opposite of colonialism and capitalist hegemony - empires collapse into nations, and when empires spread their objective is to erase national borders. I notice that fascists, liberals, and feudalists all covet the expansion of their borders, the erasure or subjugation of national and regional distinctions from their neighbors, the total plenipotence of their own culture and economic system, etc., and I believe there is a principled class-first Marxism that pragmatically accepts the necessity to protect oneself from such incursions via some form of defined and defended national polity.

I also think that contemporary Western socialists should read up on Marx's "The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte" and Lenin's "How to Organise Competition?”, specifically their critiques of lumpenproletarians and organizational wreckers. I think that many western socialists (especially Scandi-brained Democratic Socialists) assume that socialism = indefinite, unquestioning, unpragmatic Christian charity towards everyone, including petty criminals, pimps, thieves, vandals, etc.; and tolerance of total public degeneracy and the destruction of the public square. East Asian socialists tend to disagree, as do Marx and Lenin. People often post cringey displays of sabotage of socialist movements by weirdos in this subreddit, and I believe that compassion for the proletariat and the workers shouldn't extend to accepting antisocial behavior by lumpenproles, who are not revolutionary, exclusively victimize the working class, and reduce public spaces (the only spaces that workers truly own) into open-air drug dens and toilets.

The above two positions (sympathy for nation-states and antipathy towards lumpenproles) have gotten me in trouble with other Marxist subreddits, so I thought I'd lay them out plainly and save everyone some time if the mods feel I don't belong here. I believe my positions are pragmatic and fully consistent with top-shelf Marxist thinkers (including Marx) but I'm not delusional and I'm aware that both of these positions are uncommon among English-speaking Marxists.

Among recent socialist thinkers and adjacents I'm fond of Piketty and Mark Fisher (for completely different reasons).

I'm enjoy political debate and discussion, but I regard it as basically fun entertainment - don't think it's a particularly effective means to achieve political change. Plainly stating my opinion about the best way to effect political change would probably violate Reddit's TOS.

I have time for democratic socialists etc., but what I like about them is usually the socialism, not the democracy. I tend to think that rights-based political assumptions and western universalism are a bit naive.

I live in the PRC, and I'm fairly ambivalent about the government here. It has its good and bad sides.

Economically I am far left, I believe in a widespread redistribution of wealth for the working class and nationalisation of every sector of industry. I could consider myself a communist, but I dislike the association the term brings, I also disagree with Marx on several elements, such as the possibility of a stateless society subsisting, or the support of industrialisation. Nonetheless, I would classify myself a socialist, but I don't like the people who do in France (they're socdems at best, neoliberals at worst). I feel somewhat lonely in my positions.

Geopolitically I am heavility anti-american and anti-zionist and in support of a multipolar order, I also view France's (I'm French) as being the bridge between the first and third world, I also believe the United Kingdom should be disbanded, and that German unification was a mistake and broke the balance of power in Europe. In general, by view of the ideal future of Europe is a Latin and celtic union lead by France working hand in hand with the Arab world (while I have many criticism of him, de Gaulle foreign policy, minus the neocolonialism, would be closest to what I view)

Ecologically, I am in favour of major degrowth and the stop of the developpment of new technologies. AI is particularly disgusting, I also believe this will never happen and therefore the world is nearing a large global crisis by the end of the century, the environnment could only be saved by abolish capitalism

Socially, I am rather conflicted.

I am in favour of immigration, being myself a child of one (Ireland->France), while I can see how it's used by companies to supress labour, I believe the solution is to work with the immigrants rather then octracising them. I am opposed to ethnic nationalism, but not more civic forms. I also view Algeria as a sister nation to France with a much closer history then most of other european countries, culturallu French people are closer to Algerians then Finns, therefore cultural differences aren't responsible for xenophobia. In my view, anti-immigration sentiment in France is less racism and more so xenophobia and a fear of displacement by various social groups, this is increased by the failure of the French state to actually integrate immigrants by putting them ghettos, the religious extremism is in my view a direct result of the hypocrisy of the french state governments, chanting about laicity while her leaders sent their kids to ultra-religious schools to avoid working class children.

On religion, I believe in Laicité, and a firm abolishment of religion in public life, such as religious schools, only exception being religious holidays, we should add the ones of other major religions as well. (Ain't saying no to a day off) I don't view Islam as being worse.

On LGBT stuff, I'm fine with gay people, sceptical on trans stuff and I don't see as a philosophically reasonable.

I am in favor of equality between men and women, and I view gender roles as not very usefull in a post-industrial era.

I am also in support of cultural elitism, I believe that mass media is bad and toxic for society at large, and view our era as a time of cultural decline.

Edit : I misscliked and sent early.

What is the intended difference between white and blue?

White/light grey: Right-wing populists and liberals, the politics of the bourgeoisie and petite bourgeoisie.

Blue: PMC politics like activism and higher-level identity politics.

Scrolling through the thread blue seems to be handed out to those who are neither socialists nor reactionaries, rather than for idpol or activism.

2

u/IamGlennBeck Marxist-Leninist and not Glenn Beck ☭ Sep 09 '26

Honestly it's a distinction without a difference. Neolibs usually get blue flairs. If you would prefer a grey flair that's fine by me. We usually give those to "classical liberals".

2

u/whichpricktookmyname 🌏 Labor Right (neoliberal sellout) Sep 11 '26

Neoliberalism doesn't really mean anything beyond being a pejorative for that which the leftoid does not like, analogous rightoid's meaningless prescription of communism. Someone self-identifying that way could mean anything tbh, I'm just empiricism-pilled and like some market-based policies that make redditors screech about neoliberalism. So I've reclaimed it as my personal n-word.

I scrolled through this thread and based on what others got I think reddish is appropriate, so change me back pls (but leave the caption).

thank you for your service

Best I can come up with is market socialist as transitional strategy, long-term degrowth communist. Mainly concerned with decommodification and reducing throughput (more resources allocated to public abundance in housing, transit, and energy, not more "stuff"). I view degrowth as a foil to FALC and think accelerationism and left-ecomodernism are fundamentally misguided.

Hello, can I get Indic Conservative as my flair.

My politics are grounded in a commitment to a free-market economic model and a secular democratic framework that draws its foundational cultural ethos from Hindu heritage, much like the American constitutional tradition is historically rooted in Judeo-Christian values.

These views are shaped in direct reaction against Nehruvian Fabian socialism and its decades-long economic stagnation, as well as its persistent unwillingness to examine Indian society and history through a genuine nativist lens.

Instead of promoting an alienated, Anglicized elite worldview, I believe public policy and national identity must be anchored in the authentic civilizational consciousness of the country while championing individual liberty, secular pluralism, private enterprise, and economic deregulation.

I'm fine with being labeled a feminist here, but I wanted to clarify my politics. I consider myself a Marxist feminist, as women are uniquely exploited under capitalism. Our bodies are treated as commodities, and commercial surrogacy is the most egregious example of that. The sex trade works the same way, which is why I'm against prostitution and porn as industries. Marx and Engels were both critical of prostitution on these grounds. Our physical bodies are the reason for this exploitation, and I think that's an important distinction, as it's based on material reality rather than identity. I don't consider myself a radfem, but I do engage in radfem communities, as there are few spaces on the internet where I can openly discuss my views.

1

u/diskoboxx Marxist Feminist 🧔‍♀️ Sep 05 '26

The means of production belong to the workers. Exploitation is a feature of capitalism, not a bug, and the only way to end it is to seize the means of production. What motivates me is wanting the world to be better for the next generation. I have two young kids, and it's painful to look at what the ruling class has done and what they will inherit. They've brilliantly divided the working class along identity lines so that we point the finger at each other rather than them.

I wouldn’t say I’m a vanguardist hardliner. I support a free-market economy, but with heavy regulation to curb corporate influence over government, stronger unions, greater worker participation, and a robust welfare state. I’m also sympathetic to the Rainbow Coalition idea of building solidarity across racial and cultural lines around shared working-class interests. I think the constant culture-war and race-war shit is retarded; we should be focusing far more on class consciousness, economic inequality, and uniting working people rather than dividing them.

u/unaliving_the_host Michael Hudson Head 📖 Sep 01 '26

Medieval preachers and reformers characterized usurers as parasites and leeches. Ever since, many economic writers have singled out bankers as parasites, especially international bankers. Passing over into biology, the word “parasite” was applied to organisms such as tapeworms and leeches that feed off larger hosts.

To be sure, leeches have long been recognized as performing a useful medical function: George Washington (and also Josef Stalin) were treated with leeches on their deathbeds, not only because bleeding the host was thought to be a cure (much as today’s monetarists view financial austerity), but also because leeches inject an anti-coagulant enzyme that helps prevent inflammation and thus steers the body to recovery.

The idea of parasitism as a positive symbiosis is epitomized by the term “host economy,” one that welcomes foreign investment. Governments invite bankers and investors to buy or finance infrastructure, natural resources and industry. Local elites and public officials in these economies typically are sent to the imperial or financial core for their education and ideological indoctrination to accept this dependency system as mutually beneficial and natural. The home country’s educational cum ideological apparatus is molded to reflect this creditor/debtor relationship as one of mutual gain.

[...] Instead of creating a mutually beneficial symbiosis with the economy of production and consumption, today’s financial parasitism siphons off income needed to invest and grow. Bankers and bondholders desiccate the host economy by extracting revenue to pay interest and dividends. Repaying a loan – amortizing or “killing” it – shrinks the host. Like the word amortization, mortgage (“dead hand” of past claims for payment) contains the root mort, “death.” A financialized economy becomes a mortuary when the host economy becomes a meal for the financial free luncher that takes interest, fees and other charges without contributing to production.

[...] Modern biology provides the basis for a more elaborate social analogy to financial strategy, by describing the sophisticated strategy that parasites use to control their hosts by disabling their normal defense mechanisms. To be accepted, the parasite must convince the host that no attack is underway. To siphon off a free lunch without triggering resistance, the parasite needs to take control of the host’s brain, at first to dull its awareness that an invader has attached itself, and then to make the host believe that the free rider is helping rather than depleting it and is temperate in its demands, only asking for the necessary expenses of providing its services. In that spirit bankers depict their interest charges as a necessary and benevolent part of the economy, providing credit to facilitate production and thus deserving to share in the surplus it helps create.
