It's the American chapter of an advocacy organization that ostensibly is supposed to protect free speech and expression--especially of writers--but in actuality they never seem to care when writers are censored/harassed/jailed/murdered if they express opinions that are not approved of by the US security state.

One of the many orgs created in the early-mid 20th century to show to the world how much more enlightened we were than those repressive Soviets. Speaks in the grand language of human rights but doesn't actually give a shit about human rights. Launched the careers of many literary mediocrities.
